You should always take a vacuum and clean the area inside and outside of the filter area. If you notice in the video the top left corner has all kinds of junk laying around. That can also plug ventilation holes in the area, and cause wet smells and water to not drain away as designed.

I have the '07 with a permanent small metal mesh covering over the air intake. No plastic basket for a filter. You can fit a filter over that, though--any problem in doing that? Or will air flow be interrupted?

When we turn AC with outer air, it just take a very slow flow of air through grid, so it is possible to add carbon filter fabric

If you do not have the proper housing for a cabin air filter, it is likely that is will either not work or potentially disrupt the airflow.

Mine is a 2007. Has a permanent screen on it. I hate it cause all I smell is dirt when vent on. Should I cut the screen out and put filter in there? Some things on these focuses make no sense. I have allergies so I need cabin air filter!

No, this filter will only fit Ford Focus' from 2000-2005. It is likely that your vehicle did not come equipped with a Cabin Filter, but there are several locations you can check to be sure. Generally, the filter will be located behind the glovebox, below the glovebox, under the windshield cowling or under the hood.

So, based on your explanation, your theory is that the plastic basket is just to keep leaves and big debris out, based on your explanation it needs to be discarded as the pollen filter will take its place? Instead of being the filter container

I followed your instructions but found on my 2006 Focus that there is no filter installed, only a box with a fine wire mesh to catch the big stuff.

Yeah this video is for the 00-05 models and even then some did not come with the cabin air filter option.

The clips at the back of the panel on the european Focus are a pain, if american cars use the same type this was glossed over in the video. dirt accumulates around the locating pin and locks it in the retainer, one of mine actually broke off and the other clip had already been broken off previous to my ownership. There is also a screw clip to undo in the centre of the two cover panels.

@@racer2k704 The cowling is known as the "lower scuttle panel " in the UK. You say the cowling will not come off, have you removed the screw in the centre of the two halves of the cowling, its accessible after removing a small plug on the top to access the screw head. As you have broken the push clips at the rear of cowling does the rubber strip at the back that provides a (poor) seal along the windscreen liff up? It may have been stuck down with sealant on a previous occasion. The broken clips Ford ? part no. 1106903 were available in UK, Ebay UK i think. Trouble is they come in 2 parts ,pin and retainer and the latter is fused to the bottom of the cowling and the retainer was the part that broke.
