So something a little different to the Vauxhall repair videos, today i work on my sister fiat punto and its leaking oil! Time to replace the rocker cover gasket! Enjoy.

I've done this to my car now and it's instantly a much smoother ride. Previous to changing this gasket the car would shudder when accelerating in 1st, and in 2nd gear would falter when trying to accelerate. I changed the spark plugs and air filter before that and could only notice a barely perceptible change, but changing this gasket has made a huge difference. Thanks for putting this video together, guided me every step of the way, legend.

Nice simple design. That cam sensor is in a nice spot for back probing if you need to troubleshoot it. If that was designed in the USA then it would have a disposable plastic valve cover and you wouldn't be able to get to the cam sensor without tearing half the engine apart. Lets hope the Fiat's engineers rub off on the Chrysler engineers and not the other way around.

I just did a load of work on my sons Punto including what you've just done, they are great to work on aswell. I found the shield that is under the rocker cover, really gums up, had to spend half an hour cleaning it out, as there was no way through for the new oil. Great video

I got an old Mark 2 Punto in Spain. 2 of the spark plugs are having oil on them after a short time then it goes onto 3 cylinders until I clean or replace the plugs. Is this the fix for that or could it be something else or something more complicated?

My Mirafiori Sport had twin OHC and both gaskets leaked so I bought new ones. When I fitted them it turned out it was just the bolts that were loose (they were more than finger tight, but definitely weren't tourqued down properly). There's a moral there somewhere.

Just done this on my fiat panda 1.2.. whoever put the last seal on put liquid metal all around the seal area as well and it was a right mess. Just waiting on some new coil packs now.

have 05 punto and lately it is juddering when you let off the accelerator does not matter what speed you are doing. I have noticed oil coming out of the rocker cover, would this cause the issue? if not what should i look for?

change the sparkplugs. My 1.2 8v Punto judders at about 2000 rpm when you let off the gas pedal

you must put silikone , no good if you not put silikon

@ sasa you do not put silicon on a rubber faced gasket, it is made that way to squash and mate with the head.

The dealers put silicone there because it is too much a corner angle to seal with just a rubber gasket. The rubber rocker box gasket should be changed on every major service and always use silicone on the corners otherwise they will leak before the next service is due. If you do not believe that then check with your dealer and he will put you right.

Get yourself some proper workshop blue roll, it's pretty cheap, a 6 pack will cost less than a tenner usually. I use the scott version from Halfords. They are dearer but are very strong. For mopping up I use the cheaper blue roll. My missus used to give me a good telling off for pinching all her kitchen roll!

The coolant quantity In a Fiat Punto Mk2 is a Total of about 4.3L to fill the system from empty

tried to change mine, it didn't budge one bit, not 1 mm, it's probably the stock one glued by a black goo glue or something, so what to do in that case, start cutting on the old gasket or how to get the cover separated ?

Worth having a Heliocoil kit for repairing knackered threads especially if you work on a lot of aluminium :)

I got one after I replaced the turbo on my Astra and screwed a thread on the manifold, I had to helicoil it out :) I'd say for the price, definitely buy one and hold it because you'll need it at some point :)

Would a leaking gasket cause rough idle on punto ? I've change air filter , plugs , leads and it still shakes intermittently, coils seem to be fine and it's just passed mot so it's not engine / gearbox mounts , runs fine , just lumpy idle

neilcmusic If its only happening without reving the engine, I'll guess the idle screw is too loose. What the idle screw does is opening the throttle so the engine can run smoothly. Search for a video on: how to adjust idle screw

I had a 55 plate punto as my first car. After less than a year it got scrapped because it wouldn't start and despite spending a thousand odd pounds on parts, labour and diagnostics no one could tell me why. Its why i decided to teach myself car repair and diagnostics and its also why i won't drive anything else except Toyota/Honda/Subaru for the rest of my life. I know other people who have been burned badly by Fiats. Some of whp had the same issue as me.

+BusterMove Yes. I learned that when i was having issues with it. It literally was fucked most of the time i had it. It had only done 46,000 when i got it. I only did 8000 on it when i had it and spent about 1 month of the time i had it in for repairs. It cost me thousands of pounds over all. Its a miracle the cars even come with round wheels. I mean if the mafia says square wheels are ok then that will do.
