I found this video extremely helpful. I have recently purchased an old terrace house that was built in 1906 that currently has this style of removable fuse. The 5 amp fuse for my lights has blown. Having watched your video i feel confident to replace the fuse wire. Thank you for posting it. I am looking to eventually replace the fuse box and have a full re-wire.

I have to do this. As my lights have blown. My smart bulb has blown. So I am buying wire from B & Q. It’s so bad that I have an old fashioned fuse box from the 70’s !! As my flats were built in 1990. Wish me luck with the 5amp wiring 😂it looks easy . Thanks for the video. Single woman here ! 🤣👀😵💫

As an American I had never heard of anything like this until a program I was watching mentioned it. I though surely it didn't mean you had to rewire a fuse, but apparently that is the case. I'm not sure if you had something similar but during this timeframe we had threaded glass fuses that almost looked like small doorknobs. It became a rite of passage to be able to replace one in the pitch dark. Yet more things that pass into the annuls of time I suppose.

Thanks for the video. I am getting wire from B& Q tomorrow ( yes they sell it 2021) my lights have blown.. my smart bulb in my lounge went off and on twice on its own. Then all the lights went off ! This video is helpful for me a single woman, I will change the fuse wire tomorrow. When I buy the wire. Wish me luck 😂👀👌. So bad my flat has an old fashioned fuse box. These flats were built in 1990 .. NOT 1965 😯 ( I need money to get an electrician to replace with a modern circuit breaker board fuse box) I am skint at the moment. 😢

Thanks for this - I have a similar unit branded "Tamlex" and I heard a small bang like a balloon bursting and the 5A light circuit appears to have gone (there's some blackening on the case of the unit around that fuse). Weird thing is there were no lights on at the time (I do have a lot of old incandescent dimmer bulbs maybe one of those was on low and the bulb finally went - dunno), but I'll try replacing the wire tomorrow as it seems super simple. Cheers

Hi, useful video thanks - but I was wondering what sort of problem there could be if the fuse wire in the centre seems intact? Could the wire have broken around the screws? Or if it isn't the wire, what kind of other issue could be causing the specific circuit (in this case overhead lighting) to stop working? It isn't the bulbs..definitely looks like a blown fuse, but wire intact.
@jwflame4 жыл бұрын
Yes, it can break at the screws, or in the ceramic section which isn't visible. Either test it for continuity, or just remove the old wire and fit a new piece. If it's not the fuse, then a damaged/loose connection somewhere else is likely.

Thanks John. I had actually done mine as you said and it used to last for many years, but the last I had to replaced the wire on the 5-amp it only lasted a few month. Could the wires have been too old since I had them a long time? I have now bought new wire. Could you please let us know if wires can be too old thanks.

Hi john. Great vid. My 30 amp fuse (wylex) blew which is connected to the mains socket of the house. I replaced it with a 32amp trip fuse. Problem is it was tripping after an hour or so. But when replaced with a new 30 amp fuse it doesn't trip?? Can you think why this is? Many thanks

Our fuse keeps blowing when my wife cooks. I know nothing about electrics. Could it be the fuse wire simply needs replacing? The only item running in our kitchen at the time is the oven, ie kettle toaster etc are unplugged at the time. Thanks.

Was curious as to the different wire gage sizes and what is the material used for the fuse wire?
@jwflame9 жыл бұрын
+brian nelson The wire is tinned copper, with diameters of 0.2mm for 5 amps, 0.6mm for 20 amps, 0.85mm for 30 amps. Many other sizes/ratings are available.

Hi, do you know if we can put a 15A fusewire in a rewirable fuse 3A?
@ollieb98756 жыл бұрын
It will normally fit just fine, the only real difference in these fuses should be the colouring and printing on the outside. Of course it is not recommended to put 15A on say, a 3A lighting circuit. If the fuse is regularly blowing, there could well be a fault which could cause a fire. If the circuit has become overloaded due to extensions added over time to an existing circuit, it really should be split in to separate circuits, in my opinion.

@@ollieb9875 please can u help , I have this type of fusebox , I think somebody got two fuses mixed up , they have 15 amp blue for wall sockets re plugholes and 30 amp for heater?? , I think it should be other way round but am scared of putting 30 amp wire to serve wall sockets in case it damages wiring , I don't know why previous owner did this , 15 amp wire has blown a couple of times

@@victor-oq7dl yeah, 13A should be enough but I'd say don't fuck with it. I'm not an electrician. If you're blowing 13 amp fuses there's possibly some other issue

One handy trick , is to get a few ( spare ) from electricians changing customers fuse boxes to MCBs .... These are wired correctly and kept near your fuse box ... should a fuse blow , you can almost instantly replace it and resume power ( without struggling to find screwdrivers and fuse wire ( in the dark at 3 am ? )😝 .... this handy trick restores your power ( almost ) as fast as switching on a tripped MCB or RCB .... ( tried - n - tested ) ....... DAVE™🛑
