I've not changed out a hard-wired smoke detector before and went online to find instruction. I watched several videos but this one was the best by far. It showed and explained each step of the process and kept it simple for a novice like me. THANK YOU.

Hi Bruce, this type of smoke/Co alarm normally run off the household electrical supply, in the event of a power supply failure the battery acts as a backup power supply until the mains electrical supply is restored and normal operation resumes. In other words, the only time the battery is used is in the event of a mains failure, but the unit will monitor the battery condition to ensure it is okay.

I believe you are correct! I haven't review the video since reading your comment but I'm thinking I must have stated the opposite in the video. Thanks for the correction if that's the case, I appreciate your input!

Do you have to turn off the circuit breaker if switching out one First Alert with another? The hardwire is the same and in the white little tab. It seems one could pull out the tab and insert into the new First Alert device.

Can I replace the hard wired one with the battery only? If so, do I just leave the existing wiring tucked in and unconnected?
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP1012 күн бұрын
Yes and that's how I would do it if it were mine.
@raiderman843120 күн бұрын
Are hard wired plug in universal, looks like the one you replaced was different style, than the Kidde ?
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP1020 күн бұрын
I don't know if they are universal or not. Each smoke detector I purchased came with a new wire plug that fits the detector. If the old one didn't fit I just used the new plug that came with the detector.

So I only have 2 wires in the ceiling. And I dont have other smoke alarms so I'm assuming that I just cap off the orange wire and dont use it correct?

If it keeps beeping saying there is a fire, do I have to change the battery? What type of battery do I need?
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10Ай бұрын
There should be a section in the manual or on the back of the detector explaining the different beeps and what they mean. Mine use a 9 volt battery.

If I am replacing with the same model as I'm taking off I do not need to change the base plate right
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Жыл бұрын
Most likely that’s correct unless they changed the design on the newest version.
@SuperReverbious2 ай бұрын
The plastic ages and yellows. Do yourself a favor and change them. It’s two screws holding the plate.

Hey, so when I changed the smoke detector, test was done but it still beeped as if the battery was low. Then I googled and found that i need to remove battery for new detector and then press test button for 15 seconds to drain out any charge. Then I put in battery reconnected and then it did not beep again. The only difference is I see a steady green light in the smoke detector now, Is that okay ?
@DIYHomesteadProjectsDIYHP10 Жыл бұрын
Sounds like it’s ok. What do the instructions say about the green light?
@JamesChan1983Ай бұрын
I don't thank many people want to touch the circuit breaker. Many of use are totally not mechanical. We don't know which button to push and are too afraid to push the wrong button.

Issue I'm running into is as soon as I close the battery slot on the new smoke detector it goes off. I tried to let it run until the alarm went off but never did. Gonna go back through and make sure the wiring for all of them are fine then hopefully reattach them soon. Hoping it was just a wiring mistake on my end. If y'all got any advice lmk.

I thought that was the whole point of having wired/interconnected alarms: when one goes off, it triggers all the others as well. And since any new/replacement until will go off once you install it, it makes sense that the new unit will trigger all the other units as well. Or am I missing something??
@Hello_and_no8 ай бұрын
It's because after they are installed something with the circuit breaker needs to be done. I watched someone do it and it solved my problems. I am watching videos trying to figure out what they did, but I guess this is not the video!
