How to replace HV battery pack on 2015-2019 Kia Soul EV

We finally received a Lithium Ion battery System assembly from KIA that we ordered few months ago, In this video I’ll show you guys how to remove the battery pack from the vehicle, disassemble, installation and test drive.
WARNING
I don’t recommend doing this at home. Failure to follow safety instruction may result in serious electrical injuries. Purpose of this video is to give you guys an idea of how it’s done.
DESCRIPTION
High Voltage Battery Pack Assembly
-To provide the 360V high voltage electric energy to electric motor
-To save the electric energy genera rated by regenerative braking system
-Charged by rapid charge or normal charge
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS
Ground cable mounting bolt 5.8-8.7 lb-ft
High voltage battery system mounting bolt 40.5-60.8 lb-ft
Safety plug cable assembly bracket mounting bolt 5.8-8.7 lb-ft
High voltage battery pack upper case mounting bolt 5.8-8.7 lb-ft
Battery module outlet mounting bolt 5.8-8.7 lb-ft
Battery rear mounting bracket bolt 5.8-8.7 lb-ft

I have a 2017 that has been at the dealer for 2 months, awaiting its second battery replacement. First was under warranty in 2020. This time, it's related to the BMS recall. The Soul EV is a great car, and I appreciate the techs who get certified to work on them. Thanks for showing us the process!

good to have an idea of whats happening to my soul right now. . . taking it 4 months for them to do tho cause they had to have the new battery (under warranty thank god) manufactured in korea and then shipped to South Carolina first. guess it never accrued to them to have spare batteries in the states or something.

They could save so much time if you could just replace the entire pack with the exterior casing rather than having to swap the individual batteries and wiring.

Hi @carlawschanneletc. Can the whole battery pack assembly (including metal casing) be replaced from a donor (e.g. crashed) car? Is there any protection preventing that or making it more difficult? Thanks!

it’s doable, make sure the EV battery pack donor is in good share , also make sure to check the BATTERY STATE OF HEALTH first before purchasing/installing it. if the SOH is around 60% forget it. good luck 👍

Thank you for the reply. I don't have this car yet, I am just checking what options I have if I buy a used one outside warranty. There is a famous case here in Canada of a guy that was quoted 23k to replace it.

@@adrieljr You’re welcome. 23k to replace a EV battery pack is way too much or maybe I don’t know because I replaced a lot of them and they are all under factory warranty. If you’re really interested of getting one make sure check the SOH first.

This might be silly, but can we replace the old model battery with the latest to extend range. I love my 2016 soul ev, but I want to increase the range so I can drive to LA and back?

They change cells only but whit newest whit more capacity. This inscrease juste a little bit. They use 2017-2019 cell. But they do bot change bms and the case. So 2016 has 96 cells instead of 108 from 2017-2019 cases. I can be wrong somewhere, bit I received this on my 2016 soul ev

The new battery is a different shape, so aside from BMS problems, it wont physically fit - as a 2016 Soul EV owner, I am more than a bit pissed about this, as Nissan have managed it with the Leaf batteries.

oh the dreaded threaded fasteners... sandy munro would loose his marbles. What happens to the old batteries? Did you test the old pack for voltage or resistance difference? There is no battery heating/cooling in those older Kia/Hyundai EVs, that's probably also why it died.

The older battery is no longer capable of holding charge, BMS current data shows all battery cell voltage and no need to manually check for voltage/resistance, I have to double check but I believe below 50% battery state of health is consider bad/replacement per Kia HV battery standard. Before you do some work bring your vehicle to the dealership to see if your vehicle still under extended warranty, I’ve replaced a lot under warranty.

Question, My dealer Replaced the Battery and Car still shows 55mi of range. They seem to not know how to get the GOM to read the 90+mi of a new Pack. Reads 55mi at 100% in new pack. What did you do to reset the GOM? UPDATE: drove car 40mi and BMS reads correctly 90+ mi now

@@docimma dealer drove the car 40+ mi after updating both BMS and the climate system of the car. it controls the cooling of the battery. car GOM returned the expected mileage after regular use.

Hi everyone! So I have a weird issue with my 2018 soul EV. while DC charging is performing like a charm, AC charging no matter where I try it is suuuuper slow. Kia just replaced the OBC to no avail as the problem is still there. Anybody ever had the same problem or an idea ? Thanks a lot for any help you can provide !!🙏

AC is usually 3.7V or 11V depending on your car and charge station. Mine only charges at 3.7V.

@@moeillo8136You mean kilowatts? The 2015-2019 Soul EV can charge via AC up to about 6.7 kw (240V x 28 amps = 6,720 watts). The newer ones might be able to handle more than that. DC Fast charging for the 15-19 Soul is 50kw maximum.

This is such a wasteful process when it comes to labor. They should just have a replacement battery pack ready to put in, and just recycle and then inspect the old core and do all of that cell replacement and have it ready for a new customer. This way they don't have to wait 5 hours for an ev battery replacement.

Well If this car got 30mpg and drove 50K and the cost of gas was $3.50/gal. $5833 in Gas. 50K mi at 3.5KwH/Mi at $0.15/Kw is $2142 so you saved $3691 in fuel. Also, these cars come with 10yr 100K Mile Battery warranty over 70% so this was likely a warranty replacement, so FREE! and then you get a new pack, and off you go again saving $3691 every 50K miles... So yeah, High school math tells me it's pretty good savings there fella!
