After sliding the red clip you must press the secondary release on the back of the connector, it does not press in very much but just enough and keep wiggling and it will come off.

I just replaced my spark plugs and coil pack on my 2000 Cherokee 4.0. I watched this video hoping to learn how to disconnect the coil pack electric connector at the back. I was surprised that you just jumped over that step which makes this video useless in my opinion. The most difficult step was disconnecting that connector of the coil pack at the back. Even after I pushed the red tab outward, the connector won’t disconnect. It’s very tight back there and I couldn’t get a look at the back of the connector to see what I needed to do. I searched a Service Manul and it says to push on a secondary release at the back of the connector. Anyway, after tens of trials, I was able to disconnect the connector. If you are going to skip on an important step like this, don’t bother making the video. P.S. Coil Packs were only fitted in 2000 & 2001 Cherokees.

I found a lil trick. Place the coil pack in a downward position with the front of the coil sitting low in the front of the engine bay. This gives you a slightly better angle to move the red safety tab and the press the middle of the clip. Go slow and take your time. Also, an egg crate to stand on helps give you an angle to work on it. I ended up sitting on the fender and battery to get at it.

2000 was the year for the coil pack. My 98 has a distributor. My dads 03 TJ has the coil.

Thanks for the skillfully edited video. I'm trying to DIY change the coil pack on a 2002 Grand Cherokee 4.0. The plug is hard to get off because I can't pull it out away from the firewall like you did. So far I did succeed in busting a knuckle and getting my hands awfully dirty. I guess I'll go try again.

Thanks guy! I've been on Jeep forums and everywhere I could look and everyone says to pull up on the red clip. I have a Grand Cherokee Laredo and it's so close to the firewall that I cant get a good look at it. I couldn't tell what they meant by up..lol Thanks for the clarification, now to get it off.

Did it solve the misfire problem? I've got the same problem and they told me the ignition coil and spark plugs needed to be replaced, which the through Jeep Dealership auto-shop is around $1100, even though all the parts they'd need can be found online for less then $200.

its 99.5 to 2001 that has coil packs, not 97 and 98

Can't seem to find this anywhere online, does anyone know what the specs are for the coilpack bolts? Mine look just like those and say 9.8 M on them. 13mm sounds right going from memory the last time I changed it.

My 1998 Jeep Cherokee sport has a distributor cap and rotor too and it has a coil that looks like a long can of red bull with a place to plug in the coil wire from the distributor cap
