A very good informative video. So nice to hear a good, well spoken clear, non spectacularised commentary. Thanks.

Wow, with other videos I came across they dont explain the purpose of the removal tool or placement with the rack to a noob such as myself. Thanks, this makes sense!

At approx 3:00. Don't hit the end of the track rod end, hit side-on where it goes through the steering arm

Thanks for the vid, I just want to confirm something. I'd appreciate some insight. The inner tie rods connect directly to the rack and pinion, right? Therefore, if I replace the whole rack and pinion, there's no need to buy inner tie rods, is that correct?
@CraigsDIY2 жыл бұрын
Depends what you buy, in my experience a reconditioned rack or wreckers might give you rods as well, but you might just end up with the rack. And even if it comes with the rods, they may not come installed especially if being shipped because of the awkward shape. Enquire with the seller first.

If you get an old piece of belt leather about 2 mm thick and dampen it on the non smooth side, then place that on the rack `then get yourself a good pipe wrench , the old steel ones were the best made , that will bite into the leather but not mark the rack, Dampening the inside of the leather seams to give it better grip,

Idk why manufacturers didn’t make them compatible with hose clamps so we don’t have to use zip ties which can eventually break.

Craig may i ask please my mk3 has oil leaking from the rack to the boots on both sides with the rods making a creaking noise but very stiff is there a cheap and or clever fix?
@CraigsDIY2 жыл бұрын
Oil leak from the rack ends means a replacement or recond rack I'm afraid. On the topic of which watch out for upcoming video. As to a cheap fix, you could try a stop-leak product in the power steering, but it's not going to be permanent even if it works.

I think u sayed other way around. If the rack is bad tehn both sides will wave play. Ir the rod has issue then it will be 1 side

I think it would have been better to remove the inner tie rod and boot, while in situ. Then replace once you have fitted back the second hand rack

Pretty difficult to get a grip on the rod while in the car but yes if you prefer.

Why would you replace them? Steering went to shit?

It creates play or slack in the steering response and noise like knocking when going over bumps.
