Hello there 1A Auto, great helpful video. I have a question for you and need your recommendation. I have a 2001 s10 4.3 Ls. I've already swaped out my faulty original GM radiator that came with my vehicle when I purchased it new back in 2001. I have my oil cooler lines and transmission lines already connected to this replacement. My original GM radiator that came with the truck was designed a little different, when it came time to fill I just removed the cap and fill the radiator fluid to the top of the fill cap. My original didn't have a open-ended aluminum vertical pipe. This is where my questions come in to play!! I bought a replacement from you guys a while back and I'm just now getting around to finishing my swap out. However I noticed in your video and with my replacement radiator there is a silver aluminum open-ended pipe that is underneath the radiator fill cap. My question is, can I fill this how I filled my normal S10 radiator by just turning the coolant jug sideways and carefully filling the radiator to the top of the fill cap?? The reason I asked this is, my vehicle is identical and the radiator is identical to the one in your/this video and it has the same vertical open-ended aluminum pipe sitting just below the radiator cap. I've never seen that before and is different from what my original GM radiator was. So I'm just concerned and want to know if this replacement radiator was designed to be filled to the top of the fill cap?? Meaning once it reaches the fill cap it's designed to overflow back into the open-ended aluminum vertical pipe that sits about an inch and a half below the fill cap?? Or is it designed to ONLY fill the vertical aluminum open-ended pipe with radiator fluid?? Normally I fill radiators till fluid reaches the cap but I've never seen a radiator like this. And in your/this video it looks like that you only have coolant filled in the vertical open-ended aluminum tube, maybe I'm mistaken but everything around it looks dry and empty. So if you could PLEASE explain if it's okay for me to fill the radiator to the top of the cap and as it fills up the overflow is designed to run into and completely fill the aluminum open-ended vertical pipe?? Or do I need to get a a very skinny funnel and ONLY fill up the vertical open-ended aluminum pipe?? I'm guessing that vertical open-ended aluminum tube is snaked through the entire radiator? if I'm incorrect would you mind and PLEASE explain to me what that open-ended aluminum tube is?? Like I said earlier normally I just turned the jug sideways and fill to the top of the radiator cap. I really could use your help. Thank you so much 1A Auto!!,

HI Andrew, The truck at this point is 13 years old I would recommend replacing the radiator, and if you haven't it would be a good time to replace the hoses, thermostat flush the system and also inspect the water pump. The belt will need to come off anyway, if it's old it would also be a good time to replace it. I just had this happen on two Jeeps I own, talk about bad luck...lol. I have two radiators go bad, both vehicles had high miles so we replaced everything. Both run like they're brand new

If you fill the radiator up, start the truck and let it get up to temperature with the heat on inside. Then top off the radiator if the fluid drops. This method should work the air pockets out for you.

It could possible be from a bad head gasket but your best bet would be to do a compression test on all the cylinders and as well as compression test on the cooling system.
@1AAuto14 жыл бұрын
@Jesuscarrasco Yes it is usually faster just to slowly pull a hose off but it allows less control of where the coolant goes so make sure you have a large catch pan.

The vehicle was suppose to be equipped with the cooler and by disconnecting them, you could decrease the life of the transmission tremendously if it goes into a higher than normal temp range constantly.

Thanks for the video very informative. I have the same question as Chris below. My S10 is a manual transmission. My new radiator came with transmission cooler holes but no plugs. Do I need to go to a hard ware store or somewhere and by some type of plugs? Made of brass perhaps?
@1AAuto12 жыл бұрын
You may want to inspect the lines to make sure that they're in good shape and also check the connections to make sure that they're tight.
@MrBlueJK412 жыл бұрын
As far as the trans and oil cooler lines, all you need is a jewelers screw driver, and carefully remove the snap rings. (most new radiators come with new rings, you just don't want to damage the fittings.)

is there a space between the upper and lower shroud or do they fit tight togather on a 02 ZR2
@woof21613 жыл бұрын
question 02 ZR2, replaced radiator, lower shroud was out of place , not in the 3 clips, far below the fan blades. they used 3 1/2 " long bolts w/ 2" spacer slevees between upper & lower shroud to lower it. lower shroud had a hole wore throught it from the blades. I got a new lower shroud , put it in the 3 clips holes , used 1 1/2 " bolts no spacers bolted the 2 haves together so they touch & it locked up the fan tight, all i can see to do is to cut an 1" off the front of lower shroud ?

I put in one of those aluminum and plastic side radiators 3 years ago Which looks like what you have there they're black on the sides is tides an aluminum color in the center and it just cracked the plastic on the side again so I'm putting in and all aluminum radiator it actually has an extra role of cooling coils it has 3 instead of 2 rows and it's all aluminum no plastic. It actually interchanges with a Corvette But it fits us 2002 ZR2 S10. Will see how this works.

I'm sure you found them, but for someone else who may read, the adapters for the trans lines should come in the box with the radiator. You just need to swap them out. If there are no adapters, go back to where you got it to get them from another box.

I figure it out after i wrote, someone replace lower shroud bolts with bolts and locking nuts that were rusted so bad they were trying to seize, undoing the line near the radiator cap so the shroud would move and removing the fitler box i was able to get a 1/2" breaker bar on top of lower bolts and a 3/8 " ratchet and deep socket on the lower nuts and a 1/2" breaker bar on top and it took all my muscle, the bar was trying to seize all the way to the end and yes WD-40 on them. The shroud is out.

+Eduardo Moran Thank you for watching. There are many reasons why fifth gear would not be activating or initiating. It could be caused by an internal transmission component or something similar. We recommend having a transmission shop diagnose this issue. 1aauto.com

That should be fine. When you go to loosen the line keep an eye on the line while you loosen the nut to make sure it doesn't twist and kink the line on you. Hope this helps you out. Have a great day! 1aauto.com 888-844-3393

My 2001 blazer is getting a new radiator installed at the shop right now. It's gonna cost me $450 for labor and the radiator. Ouch!

Can't seem to get my engine oil cooler and transmission cooler lines off my '02 S10 Xtreme. Those are on there tight! WD-40 didn't help at all either.

+Tyler Meehan Try a pair of channel locks. Bite on and twist back and forth to break the seal that's formed. For anyone else who might be doing this job, we carry the parts shown in the video on our website. Order from us and we'll cover the shipping. 1A Auto Parts I got it later that night and pulled the radiator out. The core started separating from the tank. Thanks for the reply.
