@mss627 Jack up the vehicle under the center of the rear differential/axle. Put the jack stands under the frame. Let the weight down on the jack stands but keep support under the rear differential/axle. On one of these trucks you may not even need to jack it up.

These videos are gold. I didn't quite see where your jack was connected which probably is extremely important. I'm using a floor jack so I'll be on my back. I don't want to find out the hard way that the vehicle and suspension wasn't properly supported.

You may want to check the ball joints and also the axles.

They may be similar. Usually there's only a couple of bolts that hold them in place.

No need to jack up the truck, it can all be done on the ground. On the new shocks, install the top bolt and then use to jack to compress the shock until you can line up the bolt. It can also be done without a jack so long as you are strong enough.

Hi, I went to replace the shocks on my 98 Dodge Ram 1500, but I was having a hell of time trying to get the bottom bolt out. What's the type of drill used in most garages that they use on cars? I try searching for an impact drill, but they don't seem to be the right tool.

does this durango have anything special done to its rear end, the leaf springs look bigger and it has a raise in the rear end from the outside view? Just wondering and thanks for making these great videos.

Can you make a video of installation of the front shocks (on a 98 durango/dakota)?

Would the bolts for the front & rear shocks have torque specs with a 2003 Dodge Durango or just hand tighten?

Some videos say you have to torque them down with a torque wrench is that true or should you just tighten them down

Yeah probably is but this truck is probably never going to be driven so I did not want to waste a new one on it just wanted to show how it is done.

Why are you using your ratchet wrench as a hammer? Is it better than a hammer or mallet ?

First video of yours that I've had a concern with, you always do great work and offer extremely helpful information! WD-40 isn't penetrating oil. It's great for lubrication, and certainly works better than nothing for rusty bolts, but it's far from optimal. I love the stuff, don't get me wrong I always have 2-3 bottles in my truck and garage. I have a can sitting right next to me by my desk. WD-40 makes an actual penetrating oil, which I know you weren't using because it's a black and yellow can. To be honest, I'm not sure if they even made it back in 2011. I also use PB Blaster, and I've tried Liquid Wrench in the past as well. The WD-40 penetrating oil is pretty expensive but it's been my go-to since I started using it. Thanks for the video!

Brian Duty your wrong wd-40 isn’t a good lubricant it drys up but it’s good for cleaning metal and it does work like penetrating oil

Thank you for this video. If I don't have access to a lift for the truck, could I use jack stands to get underneath?

+Luis Coppin, Jr. You could use jack stands, but it makes the just extremely difficult.

don't know if you were able to get to your front shocks or not seeing as I'm seeing this comment is 9 years old on this video that I'm just now seeing today but I was able to get the front shocks off on my Dodge Durango by using two separate vice grips you go ahead and clamp them to the top rod of the front shock on opposite sides to center it so it doesn't spin that gives you the ability to turn those top screws off the top and you can also have it stabilized where it shouldn't move too much and if not it gives you the ability to stabilize it so you can pry those off with a air chisel that's the method I was able to find off KZbin there are some nice videos on the demonstration on how to do this I would highly recommend going and looking at those and hope this recommendation helps you out a lot and good luck

How do you replace the front shocks
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 10 жыл бұрын
HI Martin, We currently do not have an auto repair video that shows you how to remove the front shocks. They shouldn't be too difficult to replace though. There should be a bolt on the bottom of the shock and also a nut on the top that secures it to the shock tower. You should be able to access it in the engine bay. Hope this helps you out. We carry front replacement shocks for your Durango on our website. Here's a link to them www.1aauto.com/1998-dodge-durango-shocks-and-struts/y-mo-c/1998-72-64?KZbin&ShockTober&ATony

Your not actually suppose to use 2 wrenches together for extra leverage like a breaker bar, it's takes the tool over its rated strength and you risk breaking the tool and injuring yourself
