I have this issue, no crank or start but my check engine light is on too, will this be the starter still ?

Sounds more like a sensor. Is it an auto? Does it think its not in park?

would it be easier if we also remove the air cleaner as well as the intake manifold. A bit of chore but I have all the time in the world.

Nah. Done both. Easier to remove from the top. I understand it's daunting, but it works everytime.
