I don't know if I did this the right way, but it worked for me. Bought a generic drum off ebay. Did take a bit of time, but should be worth it for a savings of over $200 per drum unit. I will update this post after the drum wears out.
The OEM Konica Drum will yield 410,000 clicks. We will see how long this drum lasts. The same drum and process can be used in Konica Minolta bizhub PRESS C1060, C1070, C1070P, AccurioPress C2060, C2070P, C2070, C3070, C3080.

Update, don't waste your time on Generic Drums. Buy OEM.

Reason is there are three wear items in the drum unit. The drum, cleaning blade and wax roller. All three need to be replaced, but you are only replacing the drum when you buy generic drums.

Hi. I work on Ricoh machines almost exclusively and when I came across your videos I was having a look at them to see what the process is like. With this particular video I think I have to agree with you to replace the entire unit. Reason being, with the complete unit you get the drum, blade, cleaning brush and lube bar. Anyway thanks for the cool videos.

Thanks for this... got me started but I hit a painful issue some may benefit reading about. You can remove the drum WITHOUT taking off the 2 black plastic cams (3min 40sec) at either end. These cams are set at the factory and the screws are glued in place. If you do remove one of these you will notice that it has about 2mm of play. It literally has locating slots rather than locking holes so that it can be adjusted. These cams set the distance between the developer/toner supply and the drum. If these are NOT put back in the same position, very hard to do, they get out of whack to the drum and sit too close or too far from the drum causing a side to side density difference. All you need to remove is the top brace (0.50secs) that provides structural rigidity end to end and operator side bearing. The drum can be slid into the space left by the missing bearing and then up and out. No idea if they can be left in if you have to replace the rubber blades. Its safest to dust (with toner) any parts you clean before putting them in contact with the drum. Regarding drums. They are light sensitive. If you play with them under any type of normal office lighting strength or worse daylight… you will damage them. They can come back. Not sure if its time or use that brings them back but they can. I use a single incandescent lamp pointed into the corner of the room with no other light. Makes for dim working conditions but a damaged drum is far worse. Oddly enough, in other ways drums are quite robust. I ran some envelopes recently and glue made its way to the drums. I wiped it off directly on the drum while it was still in the machine with very soft rag and alcohol. No damage. On another drum glue was smeared all the way around. I had to take it right out and ended up wiping down the entire surface with no damage. Unfortunately it slipped from my hands twice while cleaning. Once bouncing off a screw driver and the other falling directly on the table. Incredibly I can see no sign of damage in the print.

Good idea to buy a pouch of drum set powder or "dusting powder", especially when using generic parts. Some drums and blades come pre-coated, but not all. Depends on the model or if it's OEM. Tap the bag over the surface of the drum as a light single coat and do the same on the cleaning blade(s) before installation. You can use pure toner in a pinch, but white setting powder is less messy and will lubricate the drum/blade better in prep for the adjustments and decrease the chance of blade drag/flip as well as part damage short-term. Konica dealer tech in NY.
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 3 жыл бұрын
I was wondering if that might have contributed to early failure of the generic drums. I put some setting powder on the blade, but maybe not enough. Thanks for the tip. Keep em coming! :)

@@justaprinter Its the coating on the generic drums - they are just not as well coated as OEM. My company is Toner Plus and this is what we do. If you can find a good quality aftermarket drum they can last almost as long as the OEM drums. Many years ago Mitsubishi put out a drum for the remanufacturing industry for HP printer cartridges - it was called a super drum. The coating was so good and thick that all you had to do was give it a polish and it would last almost indefinitely. They then realised they made the drum too good and withdrew it from the market. I like your videos very much.

my biggest concern with the drum rebuild idea is, what happens when you're in the middle of a big project and you discover that a drum needs to be replaced. Do you stop everything for 45 min? Do you shuffle the work load around with the other presses so that the priority work gets accomplished? Do you just keep a set of new ones around just in case or, do you purchase a second set of assemblies and then just keep perpetually rebuilding them as you have time? If storing rebuilt units how do you protect them from moisture/other environmental elements?
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 3 жыл бұрын
I have learned not to bother with rebuilding. I now just keep a few OEM drum units on the shelf at all times. Much better!
@msaeger
@msaeger 4 жыл бұрын
You should see if you can get the cleaning brush and lube bar also. The drum gets scarred up like that when the lube bar is gone. You may even be able to get the drum to last longer by replacing just the lube bar when they say the drum unit is due.
@justaprinter
@justaprinter 4 жыл бұрын
Hmm, interesting. I'll have to look into that. I kind of doubt that I can get those parts, but that would be a completely new unit then.

Hi Dan, thank you so much for your great videos you are a blessing, i've learned so much!. I hope you can help me, i have a 2060L, since new the drums keep getting scratched by the lubricant bar, even at 8% (some times at 50% it varies) after a long run thin white lines appear FD, When installing new one we only adjust gamma. My local tech disassemble the drum unit and sand the wax piece to clean it, it fixes sometimes but the problem returns after a while. I never had a drum that lasts at least 100% even on my C6000 last up to 200% , i print mostly high coverage. Thanks so much.

@justaprinter

Xerox makes nice machines. I like Konica because I can buy parts and service myself. Other brands are hard to find parts for. I switched from Xerox printers to Konica because Konica was cheaper to own/operate. Basically any printer will produce high quality as long as you are keeping up on maintenance. The C6500 will make a good starter, however at some point they will stop making parts for them, so maybe a 1070 would be a better choice.

Yoy should know that disassembling the black plasic parts from the sides is not a good idea, because they set the drum-developer distance. You can still remove the blade an the lubricant bar without touching those parts. You should also know that if you dont clean and polish the lubricant bar unevenness, the new drum will get damaged very soon.
