How to Replace the Element Relays in a Jen-Ken Fusing Kiln

The element relay inside a fusing kiln's control box is a small electronic box that redirects power to the heating elements when the digital controller requests power. Every one in a while these relay's stop functioning and need to be replaced. It's a simple task but one that many people find intimidating because it involves working with the wiring on the inside of the kiln's control box.
This 12 minute video will show you the entire process - from diagnosis of the problem, to removal of the old relays then replacement of the new ones.

Hi Randy, Thanks for the video on replacing the relays, it came in very handy. Are you supposed to run a test firing once the repair is complete? If so, can you tell me if it's with or without glass and what type of firing would you suggest?

I don't think it is necessary to run a complete test firing. All you need to do it set the kiln to fire up to 200°F, zero soak time, then shut off. If it does that with the new relays then you're good to go.

My kiln doesn't even turn on anymore. No red light. Not getting any electricity. The plug works, so not sure what is wrong. Is this because a relay is bad or is there another reason? Thank you!

Rebecca: Are you saying that the wires are opposite on your kiln as compared to the wires on the one in the video? If that's the case you're always better to hook them back up the same way they originally were. To be honest when it comes to the thermal couple only, I don't think it really matters if the yellow is on the left or right since the current flows through the thermal couple in one side and out the other.

when unhooking and hooking back up the thermal couple sensor wires, you get the red left and yellow right - opposite - and don't realize it until now, what can it do to my kiln? We're getting ready to change the relays and noticed those wires are backwards to the sensor couple thing. thank you

That is something entirely different from a relay problem. The first test is to make sure there is power to the outlet, if it's a 110 kiln, plug in a light to test, if no power there check the circuit breaker. Then if you have volt meter test for power inside the
