You saved me A LOT of headache with this video! I've been buying LaCie external HDs like the one you had difficulty replacing the HD with since....2005....a total of 10 to be exact....I've only had 2 fail on me BEFORE I they gave me the tell tail signs of failure (long time to boot up, weird sounds when getting up to rpms, sudden disconnects without warning, then reconnecting...then the dreaded tick tick tick repeating sound while trying to initially boot up.....You hear that and your HD is basically gone to the great beyond...at least the older versions were)....The other 8 I just transferred over to new external HD (seagate), and just put them in storage/archives. The latest two LaCies I bought are the 1Big Dock casings, which, as you've shown on this video, are INFINITELY easier to gain access to the HDDs....I had planned to just replace the older HD Lacies with new HDDs (I like the metal casings and the weight), but now that you've shown how difficult it is to replace them, I might as well just wipe them clean and donate them to the Good Will.......Thanks for the video.

excellent john. clearly lacie weren't forerunners of the 'right to repair' movement. my d2 internals were different to yours (possibly because mine is mains-powered), but a touch easier to work with, because there wasn't an internal fan with dangling cable. i was getting inside because the unit had died, and i wanted to retrieve the 3.5" drive to use via a caddy. so, out it came after much fiddling about, and all of its partitions showed up straight away on my mac’s screen. now, my lifelong experience with failed external hdds has been that 90%+ of the failures are due to the internal hardware/firmware crapping out, and the drive still works when inserted into an alternative enclosure, as proved the case this time. unusually tho, i thought i’d reassemble the lacie and try again - and fuck me, it worked! (who knows why? i used to smack some old drives into life again, tho that hadn’t worked here.) this is doublegood, because yesterday i lost out to some shill-bidding on ebay for a replacement, which, because of today’s fix, has become a £150 saving! it’s extra brilliant because it’s a relatively retro thunderbolt2 interface, and only second hand ones are available. and it’s given me plenty of unexpected time to write an overlong comment. thanks again.

Can the stand from the LaCie d2 drive come off, so it can be laid on its side?

Correct me I am wrong but I think the OEM Lacie D2 Thunderbolt 2 drives were 7200 RPM and the upgrade Do-It-Yourself Ironwolf and/or WD Red 8TB NAS drives are both 5400 RPM? Doesn't the reduced RPM result in a significant speed degradation? But maybe the larger 256 MB in cache makes up for it??
@JohnCastillo4 жыл бұрын
I had not realized this, huh. Thanks for sharing. These days I’ve almost entirely switched over to working straight off of SSd’d and using this more for backup.

Richard the spec for the Ironwolf drive is 7200 RPM.

Hi John, great video. Thanks. As you say, limited information on that model of the LaCie d2. I'm wondering ... did you put in the same capacity hard disk as a replacement or a bigger one ? I currently have 2 4TB LaCie d2 Thunderbolt 2s and am thinking about possibly putting in 8TB replacements.

What about the data of old HDD you replaced. Can you just put another external case and access them or not cause it's a NAS drive?

Hey Christos. So far I have just kept it aside. I’ve been meaning to get a USB reader like the Startech one to see if they are readable that way but as of now i am not sure. I am dreading the day that I need to go hunting for something on my old HDD and having to do this entire procedure again 😅

@@JohnCastillo I see 😅. Thank you for your quick reply. I just opened (with the help of your video) my d2 cause of enclosure failure (no power to the device). I tried to plug the drive with a common USB reader to my iMac but no luck. Ironwolf drive starts spinning, finder shows the drive for a couple of seconds and then a message of ' forced ejected' drive appears. Maybe I need a better reader like the Startech.
@JohnCastillo4 жыл бұрын
Christos Tararas oh no! That really sucks to hear. I hope you’re able to recover your files. If you do try out the Startech let me know how it goes - I have a feeling you’re going to beat me to it.

@@JohnCastillo Good news! With the help of a proper USB 3.0 reader files are up and running again. Everything is in place. Also Blackmagic speedest shows about 150W - 170R. So you don't have to worry either :-)

does anyone know what kind of SDD can i put in one of those cases?
@JohnCastillo4 жыл бұрын
I think you can put any SSD but you’ll need an adaptor/case because of the size. The connection is the same though. Haven’t tried it but makes sense in my head.

Older 500GB LaCie d2 Quadra ( 301110U ) At least one of the four drives screw was glued with Loctite thread sealer. I ended up drilling the screw out ad re-threading later.. And LaCie firmware rejects all non-OEM HDDs Only seeing the Samsung drive that came in it... Rejecting a half dozen Seagate and WD drives That have been fine in other generation LaCie d2 I have here. BEWARE! J.C.

@@JohnCastillo I got the same Lacie drive you just demonstrated. Its a 4TB one. I wouldn't mind to upgrade it to 10TB. But when I saw the prices starting around $260, it seems easier to just buy the new Lacie d2 USB C drive. Through I do think its a waste of a good metal housing.
