Some of these issues are dead battery symptoms as well. Slow charge, quick drain, phone reboots while battery is connected, and also no change in percentage while charging. Great video none the less!
@ibjessa9 жыл бұрын
Yes, like it says in the video--repairs shops first rule out the easily solved bad battery and bad charge port before considering U2 failure.
@mobbn9739 жыл бұрын
+Jessa Jones yes maybe you misinterpret my purposes of highlighting battery issues as the video's target is based on the u2 charging ic chip. I own and operate a repair shop. And from this level of experience 1 out of 50 iphone 5s's that come in with charge issues are the u2 ic chip at best. Most repair shops always overlook the common issues. I have been in this very new industry for 5 years and have worked with countless repair shops in countless areas. My statement was actually positive feedback and actually adding some specific information to an already great video. One of the reasons i chose Information Technology is because it is always advancing and we are always learning. Each one teach one attitude. But thanx for ur re re iteration of what kindly pointed out in the first place.

Awesome Video Jessa! I love how you take the time to take apart the phone while explaining every step in detail and why certain things are done. This is perhaps the most crucial to learning. Understanding each step and having a reason for each move such as proper heat, adjust heat and air flow, then removing with flux and using braid and so on. Beautiful setup and video! Keep it up!

Will knocking off caps/etc near battery terminal mess up U2? For example: A cap gets unknowing knocked off and battery is connected, or plugged in and thus U2 could be damaged? Because after replacing caps with new ones from DigiKey and continue to show symptoms is a recurring question I've always had. Thank you

Hey jessa great video. This looks fairly similar to replacing the LP8550 on a macbook pro just with a sightly bigger chip and a much smaller board. Is this the case?? Also is that the Dell P2715Q 4K monitor in the background??

Great videos Jessa. I'm curious -- I have an iPhone 5 ; it will not detect iTunes , or charge... I replaced the battery and it started up. Still wouldn't charge. So, removed the battery and attempted to power up with just the charger -- no dice. Could this be the u2 IC ? ... Why don't most techs offer iPhone 5 u2 IC services?
@JessaJones8 жыл бұрын
yes. and because it is a giant pain in the ass on the iPhone 5. Not worth the trouble.
@capth00k8 жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your reply. I found a service (on ebay) for $30, plus shipping and they will replace the u2 IC on my iPhone 5 (only seller that would do so) ...just out of curiosity why is it more of a PITA to do one on a 5, in comparison to say a 5c, or 5s ?
@JessaJones8 жыл бұрын
U2 is next to the CPU on the iPhone 5, so there is a good chance of killing the CPU. So then you have to explain to the customer that while they started with no charging, they have a dead CPU. Too much risk for $30!
@capth00k8 жыл бұрын
Ohhhh, I see that makes perfect sense. It is pretty close to the processor, so heat damage becomes a concern when you remove and reinstall that u2 IC. Well, I fixed mine yesterday fairly quickly -- to all those thinking it may be their u2 IC ; you should try replacing your charging port first because the part is cheap and it's fairly easy to do. That's what ended up fixing the problem for me ; and I was still getting voltage at some of the test points. No charging / no USB sync. Now all is well in iPhone land.

Hi Jessa, great Video! Unfortunately, I have neither the equipment nor the skill for serious board-level repairs, but I have a more general question: If I use a genuine Apple charger, but with a cheap replacement USB cord (instead of the original one, which broke a while ago), can that also cause damage to the U2 ic? [FYI: My phone is currently dead (black screen, no boot, no response to hard reset) and, upon connecting it to my laptop, it gets stuck in a loop: connect-to-itunes >> attempt update/recovery >> error 4005/4014/4015 (varies).]

Somewhere between 300-450c depending on the job. Hi Jessa! First I'd like to thank you for your informative video. I do have a question about my iPhone 5 that I'm having a problem with. I recently plugged it in to charge on some USB wall outlets that I have just installed. After a few hours, it only shoed 3%, when it started at 7-10%. I moved it to the official Apple charger and went to bed and noticed it kept turning itself on and off/rebooting. I figured it just check it out in the morning. Unfortunately, it was stuck in this reboot mode for a long time. it finally ended up displaying the "connect to iTunes" message. It's now stuck on that whenever it's plugged in. However, it's not getting recognized by my PC. I'm not able to access my data or turn it back on. Windows is saying the USB device has a hardware issue. Could the U2 chip be causing it not to be recognized/connect to anything? I really need the data off of there as I have tons of pictures/video of my family. Any help is much appreciated.

I've tried a new battery. Unfortunately, it turns on but still won't get past the "connect to iTunes" screen. Nothing recognizes the phone when plugged in. I've already ordered a new U2 chip. I really don't care if it's 100% operational or not, so I may just attempt to reflow the new one on. Bad idea?

I have an Iphone 5S, it had problems with charging for a few days (the charge was displayed at 1%, but it was definitely charging , the charger was getting warm), worked like that for a few days but then turned off, now it is asking for charge and recognizes when it is connected to a charger but it does not charge, it stayed like that for a quite few days and still displays empty battery, so I think the battery had some charge in it when it turned off. Hi, thanks for interesting video. I've got an iPhone 5s with no boot problem (no usb detection as well). Once connected to good battery and pressing power button the phone generates some voltages (1v, 3v, ~200mA) however the display does not come on. The display and charging port have been tested with other phone. Is it the power management chip which is partially damaged, any ideas? Thanks
@JessaJones9 жыл бұрын
+Lukas Orange 200mA sounds pretty normal. Is it detected by iTunes?
@lukasorange78569 жыл бұрын
+iPad Rehab Thanks for replay. it is not detected by iTunes (the Lightning connector and display has been successfully tested with other phone). The voltage on the lcd backlight is not rising and stays at battery level. The phone is not charging the battery as well so I have to charge it in other phone or supply iPhone from power supply.
@JessaJones9 жыл бұрын
This could be many things, with 200mA it sounds like you have a separate display problem and usb detection problem. I assume you are prompting it to boot by shorting the power connector or using a power flex. I wouldn't think a phone could consume 200mA and be a dead phone.
@lukasorange78569 жыл бұрын
+iPad Rehab I am starting it up by pressing power button. If the display does not come on and the usb is not detected it might lead to broken power management chip. I will try to measure some more voltages. I assume that if the USB interface chip is faulty it will not prevent device to boot?
@JessaJones9 жыл бұрын
unless the U2 chip itself is shorted, in which case you would likely see more than 200mA consumed. 200mA is normal function of PMIC and CPU.

Hi, i need some help! i changed the screen on my iphone and now it doesnt turn on, no charging, just no response. i did check all the ribbons and nothing still... i think its a short? Can it be this problem? i also did take out my mother board and moved it to another iphone 6 i had and no response. i may also think it could be when i was switching out the ribbons for lcd while it was still on. Please really need help thank you!!

When its plugged in for a while , does it show up on itunes or can you make vibrator motor sensor virbate by muting and muting ? it might be a display (ic) issue. cheers

Got a 5C at work that seems to show a weird like colour on any screen we plug into it, after a few mins though the display fades to darkness, also we dont have any touch at all, but the phone charges and boots fine, what could it be?
@JessaJones9 жыл бұрын
Water damage, bad touch/display power chip or local caps

she is right about the hot air station. i have an rework station that i got from amazon for about 60 dollars and it takes for ever to desolder an ic.
@JessaJones7 жыл бұрын
iPad Rehab highly recommends the Quick 861DW bit.ly/2xGDTXo for a cheap, affordable, powerful hot air station with an easy interface. It will remove all different types of chips without a problem, unlike weaker stations that can't stay hot enough long enough to do the job.

So here's a question, is A1 and B1 on tristar critical for charging? What if these 2 pads are pulled (ipad air 2)?

Hi Jessa. Only when you get a spare minute :) I'm working on an iPhone 5 that is charging the battery but won't register it's level so it won't turn on, and it displays bat empty icon. However, the gas gauge line is in tact. It will sometimes try to turn on and show apple logo but after a few seconds it will fade out and repeat forever. No liquid damage. I'm doubting it is U2 at fault as USB comms seemed to work when it showed DFU screen and the symptoms shown here don't seem to be present. I'm going to start checking voltage rails in case one is loading up/shorted. Hoping you have seen this behavior and can advise if it's also a common fault or not. Greatly appreciated, love your work!

+iPad Rehab UPDATE: so far no luck. Really trying to avoid pulling the U2 so I got to the point of seeing the watchdog timer from U1 into U6 go high causing a reset and this happens during boot or just before iOS is reloaded (apple logo and progress bar showing). Hoping this might be a software issue and I could force it to continue I removed U6 and grounded the output pad so U1 would never reset. Sadly this hasn't changed and it's still resetting, looking more like something telling PMU to shut down and come back as all the rails drop before the reboot. Now think watchdog went high as a result of U1 losing power. Will let you know if I have a win.

+Jonathan Dix or DC power supply
@nz_jonny61178 жыл бұрын
+Jessa Jones Thanks so much for further helping eliminate U2. I believe battery is good so must be another issue. Will try with DC supply just in case, but I thought it would have issue not being able to read gas gauge line. Will post update.
@JessaJones8 жыл бұрын
+Jonathan Dix it will after a few minutes, but it should boot and come to full display before it notices gas gauge problems

my iphone 6 reboots after 3 mins constantly whether is plugged in or not. It does charge,connect to itunes, restores and updates, when reboots it says 1 percent then when you hit the home button its says the right battery percentage does this sound like a symptom of a bad u2 ic?
