I have read that there is also a thermostat zinc anode that should be changed. Not sure if this is true. Any feedback would be great. Thanks for the video, very helpful.

I didn't notice that on mine, however there are internal anodes that I believe are near the spark plugs. (i'll have to check where mine are) there are typically one on the bottom of the mount as well as on the bottom of the lower unit. they do need to be changed periodically. Maybe I'll do a video on it when I change my oil and spark plugs.

Got the answer from a local shop. The anode is small and is connected to the screw located on the thermostat housing between the two mounting bolts. The part number is 6P3-11325-00-00 You may also need to the small gasket (90430-05002-00).

Excited to find your channel I am a subscriber now, i have the same motor. I finally left the two-stroke world this year. on your video three minutes in, the bolt on the outside of the thermostat Housing appears to be an anode?Did You ever replace it one?

I don't think I did. I wouldn't have if it still looked good. If it was all pitted and corroded I would have. Truth be told I usually bring it to the shop every other time I need maintenance, that way they recommend things that I don't know about being a backyard hack

How often do you have to change the thermostat? Is it part of the routine of oil change maintenance?

depends on how many hours you put on your boat and if it's salt water vs fresh water. I change mine every 2 years. I use in salt water and probably 150 hours a year

I change the thermostats every year as maintenence . If stuck closed they can cause overheating. Overheating can be caused by multiple things , themostats being just one of them.

Interesting video and explanation - how many hours do you have on this engine ? Do you know when Yamaha changed from the 3.3 L engine to the bigger ones ? In some countries they still sell the 3.3 Liter ones.....

not sure how many hours I had at the time of the video but I now have about 530 hours. I change the thermostats each year when I change oil and spark plugs. The impeller I typically do every other year. Around 500 hours have to start regularly inspecting Belt. Checking the bilge pump twice a year and replacing every two.

@@Kevtheguitarguy I did mine after 500 hours and that was over 8 years of boating with flushing my engines after every use. The only reason I changed them was because I was in there doing my injectors. They were still fine. I don't fall for the Yamaha business model of overkill on component changes, but hey, you do what makes you happy.
