Love this, just did the same to my Outback with a few tweaks. FYI - I was able to fish the wire through the gap into the light housing without having to remove the inner part of the housing, as long as you do it before you connect the bulb adaptor. Thank you for the idea and video!

Nice job bro. I just ordered one for my OBW. I also upgraded all the interior lighting as well as the reverse lights and rear turn signal lights to LED. I love how simple Subaru makes it for us as owners to do DIY projects on our cars. Cheers!

hi can you tell me what did you wire your rear dash cam to? this video looks great and helpful by the way. thanks Just watched your other video all clear and concise.

The rear dash cam is powered by the front one. The cable is wired just the same as the video I did in the Crosstrek Wilderness.

Why not just get the biggest led panel that you can fit inside oem housing ? Probably with 24 5630 chips. Probably would be as bright as that strip you added and look way cleaner than that just taped there imo

If your going to unmount the light housing, you could connect (solder connect) the LED strip, after the switch, so that you could keep the original lamp socket and replace that original bulb with an LED bulb, providing two sources of light combined.

That was a really great video. What was the issue that you had with the light strip not turning on when you initially plugged it in after the housing was dismounted? What was that little tool that you used to pop the clips?
@wildxtrek2 жыл бұрын
The 194 wiring for the LED strip is polarity specific. I just simply inserted it backwards. I just had to flip the socket around, but due to the tight space, and the curl of the wires, it looked a lot harder than it really was. The tool I used was just a dash/trim removal tool from Amazon. They can be found at most automotive stores.

AND. What is the current draw on the strip vs. stock bulb? Is there a risk of pulling too much current with the strip on?
@wildxtrek2 жыл бұрын
The LED strip draws the same amount, if not less than the incandescent bulb that came with the car. There should be no issues in current draw.

Hey was the black portion at the back sticky? I just got mine today and am trying to install, but it's not sticky at all
@wildxtrek2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the back portion of my strip came with 3M adhesive. When I took it out of the box, the adhesive came with a brown backing paper. It should be visible in the portion of my video before I adhere the strip.
@chrisgraham2904 Жыл бұрын
The strips are manufactured and sold as "adhesive" and "non-adhesive" strips. You bought the wrong type.

Considering you tapped into wiring, would this cause potential void for warranty?
@wildxtrek2 жыл бұрын
This is the beauty of this product. I did NOT tap any wiring. The LED strip comes with a small wiring harness at the end that comes with interchangeable male sockets. All I did was use the socket that fits the overhead cargo light (its a 194 bulb socket) and plugged it in. As far as the car knows, its just another lightbulb. There is NO splicing, wire taps or cutting involved with this installation. It’s 100% reversible as all you have to do is unplug it and put the stock bulb back in. I explain this at 0:24 in the video.

The 2018 is a little different that prevents this. There is no stationary plastic trim on the roof near the lift gate, unfortunately. Too bad, I really wanted the extra light.

What LED bulb did you had before you installed the LED strip? I don’t understand why rest of the lights inside are white and that one was left as a warm color.

or you can replace the "crappy bulb" with a LED bulb :) it's not gonna be as bright as the strip though
@wildxtrek2 жыл бұрын
Of course. And as I explained the beginning of the installation (1:34 in the video), I already had an LED bulb in there. Not only that, I replaced it with a more powerful 921 bulb and I still found it insufficient, hence the upgrade to the strip.
