This channel is full of transparency! I am no better than you or anyone else who chooses to watch and comment. You watch other videos they make it look easy. Which is fine, mine wasn’t easy and I want people to know what to do in case it’s not easy. The answer isn’t quitting bc a video didn’t cover it. My advise to anyone doing this job. Go to the hardware and get the appropriate hardware. At the first sign of struggle, just cut them out. If wasn’t so focused on reusing the OEM hardware (for some god for shaken reason) video would have been a lot less shorter lol! One of my subs on another video phrased it… “I do it twice, so you do it nice” Appreciate the kind words, sorry about the rant! 🔧🤙🏻🇺🇸🦅

One thing I learned for successful unseizing of rusted bolts is that you need to heat the bolt REALLY HOT (like for 5 minutes with a blowtorch for a bolt this size) then cool it off real quick with lots of water, and repeat a few times. The sudden thermal shock and repeated cycling makes a huge difference in getting the rust to come loose. That being said, I will be soaking the bolts with ReleaseAll for the next few weeks before attempting the job. I think the regular road movement should help get it into the smallest crevices to help loosen it up when I'm ready to do the job. Like everyone in the Salt Belt I use NeverSeiz on all automotive bolts I manage to remove when I reinstall them.

Thanks for the DIY post. I wanted to like the Monroe Quick Strut but felt I should share my cautionary tale: At the advice from my mechanic, I bought QuickStruts for the front & back for my 05 Element. I had Monroe Quickstruts professionally installed in the front and DID NOT HAVE GOOD RESULTS, unfortunately. I had to return my front Monroe QS right & left 2 times for warranty replacement. Monroe put up a fight and wasted hours of my time before finally conceding. They WILL NOT pay for labor expenses (approx $380 in my case). After 2 replacements in less than a year I still did not have a good secure ride and it was clear that Monroe did not really want to stand behind their product, despite their "lifetime guarantee". I finally got smart and installed KYB in the front and will install KYB in the rear in a month. I have a pair of Monro QS new in box . If anyone wants to make an offer, I live in Boston. Feel free to reach out.
@pattayperformance2 жыл бұрын
Been using Monroe’s for almost a decade and no issues. It’s very rare any manufacturer will pay for labor. Sounds like you made the mistake of buying parts and bringing them to your mechanic. If you supplied the parts the mechanic isn’t responsible. On the Honda forums as of lately a lot of people are having issues with KYB’s. Some of them the quality is so bad they can’t even install it. Apparently jumping through hoolah hoops to get them warranteed bc they bought them online. None the less glad you got your E sorted out! I admit I was wrong about the heating and cooling method I posted about previously and that served me so well so far to free seized bolts - Despite my best efforts, soaking the strut bolts in ReleaseAll, heating them then cooling them off rapidly a few times, even using a 600 ft lb air gun I bought especially for that, the bolts remained seized! I should should have realized there's just no way to bring the kind of heat required to do the job with a propane torch, considering the heat has to travel all the way through a sleeve surrounded by rubber acting as a heat insulator! So I wanted to say THANK YOU for showing the job can be done with limited means in difficult conditions (I'm working with the car on jackstands in my driveway just like you) - the fact you were able to get the bolts off with a grinder despite the cramped conditions encouraged me to take a second look at the job. So after revisiting your video I checked the clearances between the strut eye and the bolt support yoke of the control arm, and it looks like if I cut the bolt head right flush with the inside of the yoke with my 4" grinder with a cut off disk and cut the welded nut off flush from the outside on the other side, the strut should come off with minimal prying with the bolt remains still inside the bushing. Thanks again for sharing your real life experience, it was much appreciated. I'll let you know how it went!
@johnnyjimj20 күн бұрын
It went well with the grinder, but it was quite dangerous as the grinder got jammed as one of the bolts gave way and the strut suddenly came down an inch and the cutting wheel shattered all over the place. Fortunately I was not directly in line with it and I wasn't hurt, but next time I'll make sure to jam a socket under the strut eye before starting. Installing the new strut definitely requires a jack with a thin socket to lift the strut eye up through the yoke notch. I also had to orient the strut eye properly using a long ⅜" socket wrench extension and had to use a pry bar to lower the trailing arm a bit into the lifted strut so the new bolt would fit in correctly. I used 80mm long, M14×1.5 grade 10.9 bolts with a 45mm unthreaded portion and corresponding nuts and plenty of NeverSeiz and it worked perfectly. I didn't use Nyloks as the OEM welded nuts aren't - what keeps the bolt and nut together is proper torquing to 69 FtLb, as specified in the service manual; the top nuts should be torqued to 54 FtLb. It took me all day including an inordinate amount of time to properly support the car (I'm on a gravel driveway and tried a few different ideas before settling for the rear support pints and a central support under the rear cross member as an extra safety with the transmission in park and the the front wheels firmly secured with rubber wheel chocks) and did some minor touch-ups to the wheel well rubberized coating, but I'm sure it could be done in less than half that time or less if you're working on a hard surface and can avoid the mistakes I made.

Just tackled this job after watching yours as well as a few other videos. You guys up north have a lot of rust and corrosion that we don't see down here in the south. Seventeen years and 441K miles on my Element and I have no rust nor any seized fasteners. A bigger impact may have made your job easier. My impact has 1200 ft/lbs of torque and banged that bolt right off. But the force of the spring put so much downforce on it that I ruined the threads trying to get it free. I wish I had a taken the upper control arm bolt off first to help alleviate the force. Live and learn!

Can anybody guess what causes rear end grinding noises when sharply turning at parking speeds? I’ve considered the rear diff but it seems fine by my mechanic
@pattayperformance3 жыл бұрын
Excellent question... I would get underneath it and start grabbing things to see what’s broken and worn. Replace what looks funky. If you suspect a rear diff, drop the fluid and inspect for metal shavings. By nature there should be some but excessive will tell you it all. Changing out your rear diff fluid is a maintenance item as well. Some manufacturers vary from 30k-150k. I keep it simple at every 50k. I keep a binder for my records and receipts. It really helps me keep track of things and gets parts warranteed when needed. Please keep us updated! thanks for the view and comment, hopefully you subscribed to my channel 🤙🏻🦅🔧🇺🇸

This is almost always rear diff related from what you described. It just needs the fluid changed in it. Honda recommends every 30k to change it. Use genuine Honda fluid. Easy job, I did it a while back and made a video on it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/j5OyYn-VrJ6FjM0

I have 5 ton jack stands under the there. Can’t any safer than that and chock for the front wheel so it can’t roll on me as well. Thanks for the view and comment, hopefully you subscribed to my channel 🤙🏻🦅🇺🇸🔧

the stands will hold the weight but you can literally push the car off the stands when you trying break a bolt especially using cheaters and pry bars that give you leverage.

@@David-ry5il that’s why I have the wheels chocked so it can’t move. Being 5 tons they are built strong and base is wider as well. I really appreciate your concern!
