You've got yourself a sub! My mum was given a small potted cactus a few years back for Christmas, it had a little Santa hat and googly eyes hot glued to it. I spent a good 3 hours carefully pulling the glue off it's been living ever since!

Replant with catcus soil. I use terra cotta pots because it is the best for them. They are available just about any where now days. The new pot only really needs the next size up . So a 4 inch pot now needs a 6 inch pot as so on....

I use the little packs that absorb extra moisture They come in all medicine bottles now. I just place on top of the soil and Bam!!! no longer an issue. And don't overwater them.

What is the reason for choosing a pot only slightly larger? What would be the downside of potting in a larger pot? In nature, there is no "pot", and the cacti seem to do fine. Are there considerations other than the health of the plant?

In a much larger pot, watering becomes trickier, as there will be more soil holding water that the plant will not be able to absorb and also will take a lot longer to get dry, and thus cause rot.

You don't address how one repots large and heavy cacti, such as a Mother in Law's Seat (Bogarub-echinocactus-grusonii), i.e. how it is lifted out of the pot and suspended over a new pot without personal injury, or injury to the plant.
