You're very welcome! Just be careful because orchid bark out of the bag is very dry. You may need to water more frequently in the first couple months after repotting.

I know nothing about orchids! I recently retired and received two orchids as gifts. One stopped blooming, the other still has flowers. I only water them when they are dry. I didn't know that they only bloom once, then need to be cleaned up. I'm going to Home Depot today to get bark mix and try and re pot them. Cross my fingers, I don't kill them! Be careful also with the watering. New bark mixes don't retain much water, so you may need to water more often than you think in the beginning. Feel the bark mix and try not to let it go completely dry.

You're very welcome! I'd like to reinforce one thing. If you are using a bark mix, after repotting you may have to water more frequently in the first 2-3 months. New bark out of the bag is really dry, and even if you soak it before using, just be vigilant with watering for 2-3 months after repotting. Stick your finger down in the mix and water when it feels like it's nearly dry.

This is so helpful to me! I got a beautiful orchid marked down in a grocery store floral department. It was at a reduced price because it wasn't blooming! This is only my second orchid and I know very little about orchid care. It was a beautiful plant but started to drop leaves pretty quickly. When I pulled out the inner pot I saw that the potting medium was almost completely deteriorated and saturated with water. So with the help of this video I've just repotted it. I hope I got it right! Thanks for your great help!

You're very welcome! These plants are very sensitive to sitting in water and will rot. However, they don't have any pseudobulbs like many other orchids so they are not drought tolerant and don't like to dry out completely. I'll refer you to my blog post on watering. I liked the closeups of the plant! So funny to me that you said to repot after it has bloomed!! Mine hasn’t bloomed for two years! It is now getting repotted and I cleaned up the roots with no fear! Thank you. This was very helpful and also made me chuckle :). Most orchid advice suggests to soak the bark mixture overnight. I just finished re-potting 5 orchids. I boiled some water and soaked the mix, let it cool down and to make sure it wasn't too hot, rinsed it in cold water. Also I prefer to sterilize scissors etc. in boiling water. No chemical residues :). Also it is said not to re-use the clear plastic pots. Well, being unable to find any place to buy clear pots with (or even without) holes. I washed and sterilized the plastic pots, (one at a time) and cut some extra holes in the sides. Keep your fingers crossed."))

I am enjoying your thorough class and trying not to behave like an old lady and judge you! But I could not help it. You have everything so neat and clean _ the paper, the tray, no bark scattered around haphazardly on the dining table, the sterile scissors the pots presumably sterilized too, ( so surgical!!), unhurried, neat in appearance (some lazy person may have thought nothing of coming on the blog dressed in their glad rags, and clear in communication, not hurried and breathless, and your tone is refined and clear. And the icing on the cake is that it is indeed a master class in re potting. Have not met individuals especially males with these clean traits in a long long time. Sad but true refinement is dead. Some countries are churning out teachers who themselves need a master class and I hope those watching realize we can learn and also teach at the same time just in the ordinary activity of our day to day life. I am going out to buy a dying orchid and see if I can implement your step by step guide to grow one successfully. 1st mission for a novice at orchids _ I certainly have taken away a lot today. I wish myself good luck with starting a new hobby.
