wow didn't think this would solve the problem (was having no power except 3 blinking lights: esc, f1, f4). but resetting using this method, the laptop now powers up again as if nothing was wrong. it's like these laptops can entire a locked state and require a complete loss of power to exit that state. thanks for the tip!!

My laptop fell on the power side, chipping away the power area and was told the power pins moved? I was told power area pins needs to be replaced, but no no guarantee computer will be fixed. I got a call that I would be charged $200 extra so they can check motherboard as well or to just give them $50 without repairing it. What do I do? It's an old Thinkpad, x1 carbon gen 3.

Possibly the BIOS - battery (CR 2032) is empty. Most likely you will have to open the laptop. The battery is often very hidden. You have to search and swap it.
