Thanks for your very informative video. I was wondering if it is possible to remove old dark stain/varnish from a small cane ottoman and have it come back to natural wood? Would denatured alcohol remove the dark sticky finish?

The best result would be to have it professionally stripped in methylene chloride. DIY with paint stripper. I'm not sure that you'll have much luck with methylated spirits or alcohol. Guess you could try first though. It really depends upon what the actual old finish is. Good luck either way.

If you were going to paint rattan furniture, would you strip the varnish off first, or just apply the paint on top? Which would be more effective? Also, what grit of sandpaper do you use? Thank you. I'm hoping to restore a table set I got

Hi Aly, if you’re intending to apply a painted finish, then I personally wouldn’t paint strip unless the old varnish is lumpy or cracked. Use a medium sanding sponge rather than paper. Apply a good undercoat before your top coat. Use an oil based enamel for a more professional look. Good luck. R

Dipped into Methylene Chloride. Or you can use any paint stripper off the shelf as long as it's non caustic.

I use an air staple gun, but you could use and electric one. Use narrow gauge staples up to 12 mm.

I wasn't able to get your BIO OIL, so I bought another one called, 'BOILED LINSEED OIL' which I was told was one of the best oils for Cane or Rattan furniture. To be honest, I have no idea, at this point, if the beautiful chair (btw, in mint condition, Lucky find right! 😏👍🏾) is actually Rattan or Bamboo! 🤷🏾‍♀️ Q: Are those two materials treated the same or completely differently?

Linseed Oil is just as good. I no longer use BIO oil as it's too expensive, and Linseed does just the same job, and cheaper apart from its smell!! Just make sure you use sparingly and rub in well with a clean cloth. Rattan (Cane) is solid, whereas Bamboo is hollow. The oil will be good for both.
