In this video I restore a Stanley No.5 hand plane. The technique I use in this video is a lot simpler and takes less time with amazing results. I will include links below in the description to the items I use in the video. Please Subscribe to the channel and hit the notifications icon if you have not done so!
Here are some affiliate links to products I recommend in your restoration process. Any purchase is greatly appreciated and helps me to continue to make more of this content.

Great job. After glueing the tote, put it back on the sole. The fastener will hold it tight, and exactly where it needs to be.

Thanks for the input..that's a really good idea! I'll be sure to make mention of that in future videos. I'll try that next time I run into another broken tote.

I would make a few changes, but overall good video! I typically use a little grinding compound on the frog's mating surfaces and the part on the body it mates to, for a better fit.

I love your restoration but why black paint on what looks like Rose Wood tote and knob?
@cannonwoodworking5917
@cannonwoodworking5917 2 жыл бұрын
Actually that handle was beech painted over black. Stanley went to that style after 1945 I believe. The plane in the video is probably made in late 40's

@@markbrophy1276 no problem. It's a shame that stanley no longer makes tools like those today. All of the stanley tools today except for a few are made overseas and with cheaper materials.

If you want to flatten the sole, you have to do it with the frog and chip breaker installed. The pressure they apply to the body will affect it slightly.
@cannonwoodworking5917
@cannonwoodworking5917 7 ай бұрын
Actually several people have refuted that claim. The plane collector showed that it doesn't make a difference. I have done both and have not had any issues
@lenonkitchens7727
@lenonkitchens7727 7 ай бұрын
@@cannonwoodworking5917 Probably depends on the plane. I can see it not making a difference on a longer plane. I know I flattened my smoother without it installed, and suddenly it wasn't flat when i went to take my first shaving. It had a hollow in the middle. YMMV I guess. :D

Thank you for your respectful restore. I see so many people removing the japanning and taking everything back to bare metal. Your result was probably a better condition than when it was brand new.

Nice restoration! I really like how the casting turned out, and it is nice that you were able to keep the original japanning. Evaporust is da bomb! I find that everyone has their preferences. I’m currently working on a #7 that was in very similar condition. Only things I would do differently are use boiled linseed oil, then shellac, then wax on the handles to recreate the original finish, and also assemble the plane before sanding the bottom, because tightening in the frog could flex the base.

Ok thank you for the compliment! I will try that particular finish next time. I am currently restoring a Sargent #722 autoset plane, that I hope to have posted before the year is out.

Thanks..I tell ya Evaporust does a pretty good job. I think Im going to try electrolysis in a future video, because that process will remove the rust effectively but it will also leave some of the patina.

No no no. Don’t paint a rosewood tote black. I was with you until that point. Black painted totes were always considered “lesser” in the Stanley plane series. It meant cheaper wood was used. Or the black plastic knobs were used. I am with everything else. Not liking the black paint. I think you should strip that back down and bring the wood out. At the end of the day it’s your plane. Do with it what you want. I think it’s a lot like painting a Porsche with a 4” paint brush. It’s still a Porsche just not as good looking.

@whittysworkshop982

No no no.... it's obvious you dont know what Rosewood looks like, its plain to see this is Beech. This isnt a very old plane, most manufacturers stopped using Rosewood on bench planes around WW2. This plane is 50s at the oldest, but I reckon its much newer from the shape of the frog and the other hardware.

Neither handle was rosewood. Look at the view where you could see the tote broken. Also way to porous.

Nice restoration. I'm not sure you want to wear gloves while working on the buffing wheel. If the glove gets caught in the wheel it sucks your hand in with it.
@cannonwoodworking5917
@cannonwoodworking5917 2 жыл бұрын
Ok thanks..the reason I wear gloves is to protect my fingers from any stray strings on the buffing wheel. Also the parts from the friction gets really hot. I'll look into some better hand protection
@whittysworkshop982
@whittysworkshop982 Жыл бұрын
Gloves are fine, there is nothing to catch on except the arbor; and that would be difficult to do. It's not toothed or fluted, there is nothing to grab your hand. The friction from a buffing wheel can "burn" the skin and it's not nice. I've seen pros use gloves to buff things..... when buffing small parts its inevitable that your skin will touch the wheel; gloves are fine 😁
@whittysworkshop982
@whittysworkshop982 Жыл бұрын
@@cannonwoodworking5917 I reckon gloves are fine for the wheel, like you said; it does get hot, and the friction can "burn" ya. I'd go for a glove that's tight around the wrist tho, the gauntlet style glove with an open wrist wouldnt be my first choice....... its annoyin when stuff gets into the glove 😂
@cannonwoodworking5917
@cannonwoodworking5917 Жыл бұрын
Ok thanks for the suggestion. I have found that those gloves are bulking and your right about it getting caught in the wheel. Where can I get better gloves?
@whittysworkshop982
@whittysworkshop982 Жыл бұрын
@@cannonwoodworking5917 I don't think there is a worry about them getting caught in the wheel, I dont think there is danger in what you are doing. The gloves are perfectly fine for buffing, but I do see what you mean about them being bulky. If I'm using a buffer or a grinding/wire wheel I use those standard gloves you see in nearly all hardware shops...... the ones with the stretchy cloth back and textured rubber grippy surface on the palm. If im using a different type of glove for other work; I wear "Snickers" brand, they're tough and long lasting, and tight around my wrist which I like very much. I'm not sure where you are in the world, but I have a feeling "Snickers" is a European brand of workwear; so they may not be available if you're across the pond in the States.
