Thanks for the video. Let me add one vital step. Fill the oil cups under the bearings. I recommend SAE 10 or any other light machine oil. (Do not use 3-in-One for any purpose other than to commit sabotage; it gums up.) Running the fan without lubrication will ruin the bearings.

There's also a wick inside each oil cup held in place by a coiled spring. The bottom end of the wick sits in the oil pool in the cup, and the upper end just touches the bearing. This wick brings oil to the bearing to keep it lubricated. These wicks are often super dirty and/or hard. You can get a brand new clean wick (make sure you get the same size as the original), or put fresh oil on the wick and blot it with a paper towel over and over until you're happy with how clean and flexible the wick becomes. Zoom-Spout oil is perfect for these oil cups and wick cleaning efforts.

i have this exact fan thanks for the video.. gotta replace the cord between the oscillating part top and bottom its dry rotted got it wrapped in tape....lil the fan has worked for many years smooth.. it lives on top my kitchen fridge and cools me off during the summer... i never use the oscillating feature because of the cord... cant wait to replace it and use this fan to its fullest potential..
That looked easy. Now I can restore my vintage fan...🤪

Hi, thank you for a great video. Can you recommend what new motor to buy for the fan you restored as i have the same one only it's missing the motor underneath the fan. Thank you.

I have a three speed version of this fan to repair. I believe the motor pulsing and causing unnecessary vibration. I’m looking to have it rewound or replace it with One, which could be retrofitted only mechanical changes

Just beautiful….we found one in my husband’s grandparents seller, it looks just like this one but a bit bigger, the cage is bent, other than that, it’s just dirty. I don’t know what to do with it, my husband said just toss it, but I can’t. So it sits in storage.

Can you restore one which will not run for some reason? Perhaps the motor is stuck or broken? There's one I'd like to try to restore but it does not run. Curious if I can repare or replace the motor so it will run?

I have an early Century fan with a sealed motor. I just keep it well oiled as it has 2 oil ports. The electric cord has been replaced and the black paint on the base and motor encasement is like new. Other than that just a fresh brass polishing about every two years. The patina develops fast, so I like to keep it nice and shiny looking, even the brass cage and name logo on the top. Is there anything else I need to do, as the motor on mine is sealed and I can't see how to open it up anyway.

Cool! One of my Art teachers has one of those set up in part of a still life display, but it has a handle on top of the motor housing and is missing the badge on the center of the front grille.

I have a GE F15S125 fan I’m restoring. All wire connections were apart. I need rewiring it please. It’s an oscillating fan with a two position switch, and 4 wires coming from the motor, 2 white, 1 red and 1 blue. It’s a 110-120v 60hz motor.

Hi, I have a Robbins & Myers four blade 3 speed oscillating fan. It was previously restored, worked for at least 20 years, then started leaking oil all over the place. Finally when I would turn it on the motor would just make a loud constant sound and the rotors wouldn't turn. Would this restoration help with my scenario, or is there something more?

Good video, but we would liked to have seen how to rewire the main motor to the main switch controls?
@area85restorations756 жыл бұрын
It's not too hard, just copy what was there. That is what I have done for the 4 antique fans I have rewired. Just make sure not to damage any winding insulation. Lastly NEVER use wire nuts on something like this... or ever in my opinion.

@@ritchiehornak3917 Thanks, but I actually got mine working last night! I'm still super excited about it. Turned out to be way more simple than I thought, but I still had to stare at everything for a really long time before I figured out how it worked.

what type of grease do you use for the gears in the gearbox? Thanks.
@CassieValenti7 жыл бұрын
Hi, I just purchased a turquoise Dominion fan at an antique shop. I cleaned it up pretty good but it's make a thumping noise on each speed after a minute of it getting going. The fan blades pull in and out of the motor? and when it pulls back in is when its making that rocking sound. It seems as though I need to adjust it maybe. Do you have any advice?
@SuperGlocker776 жыл бұрын
Hi Cassie. You will need to pull the motor apart and get shims for the rotor. Is this a desk or box fan? If its a desk fan you'll need to clean the old grease from the gearbox and put new grease in. You can buy motor shims from McMaster Carr. Hope this helps.

Nice, how did you remove old paint?
@nickdipaolofan59485 жыл бұрын
a few ways. best way is to sand blast the parts down to the bare metal. But that is not required, you can also sand it down with sandpaper and get it down to at least 200 grit or finer. It does not matter if some of the old paint is still there, just as long as any bumps are gone and there is no shine left anywhere on the old paint. Then give it a couple coats of primer, then a couple coats of paint, then a clear coat if you want.

The video is decent quality visually, but you unfortunately skip over all the important details (like how & why) and you give no instruction whatsoever on complex procedures regarding cleaning, rewiring and reassembling the fan. The reason most people would watch this video isn't to observe you gloss over complicated details, but to learn how to perform those complex tasks. .

I just bought a 1940s fan that looks art deco style and I bought it for $5 because the cord was destroyed and they could not say if it worked. I bought it thinking I'd clean it up and sell it, hahaha. But after wiping it down, putting a new cord on it, and oiling it, I fired it up and fell in love. These things not only have much more style than the ugly plastic crap you buy at Walmart, but they work a million times better. The next day I threw my plastic fan in the trash and put my 1940's fan in a prominent spot in the living room.
