Did tesla not say anything to you for when you modified your car? I thought they would cut your ability to charge fast if you install the retrofit yourself.

Just FYI if your vehicle is running version 2022.16.X or higher, you can access service mode without needing to visit a service center (previously service mode was geolocked to service centers). With service mode you can request a firmware reinstall. The vehicle will download the version you're on and prompt you to install, much like a normal software update. I would download before you install the new ECU, so you don't risk draining the 12v battery after you finish installation. This also means you can do this ECU upgrade without needing to wait for a new software update or visit a service center to enter service mode.

I recommend having all the doors (or at least driver door, passenger rear door, trunk, frunk) open and windows down before anything. I also recommend using the shutdown button in settings prior to disconnecting 12V or HV. Otherwise, excellent video. Should help a lot of people that may be intimidated by an otherwise fairly easy procedure to add a lot of functionality to a Tesla.

Supercharging is currently disabled for all Salvaged titles. Thankfully CCS is available now just like every other EV which currently cannot use Tesla network anyway.

Hey - FalconFour here! Wow - can't believe I missed this video for the past few months. What an awesome breakdown, almost exactly perfect video representation of the forum thread. Of course, it's critical that people understand that the "Bundle"/harness/adapter *only* applies to Model 3s from 2017-Oct2020 (chrome trim). If you try putting the adapter/Bundle/harness on a Gen4 car (Y or black-trim Model 3), you'll have a bad time. The Bundle is an unofficial hack, tweaking and rearranging some sensor inputs so that your Gen3 charge port looks and (mostly) works, electrically, like a Gen4. The only caveat is that the temperature sensing is shifted upward a bit - the car thinks the port is hotter than it is, but it aligns with overheating values for safety (it will not allow the port to melt, and may throttle a bit earlier than it otherwise would, to keep temps low). The Bundle will not be Tesla's official solution, when it comes out - but it seems Tesla is unofficially satisfied with this hack - if you try to buy the now-released US CCS adapter, and you have done this retrofit, the Tesla shop "opens the gate" for you and lets you buy it (says your car is compatible, after it's been updated). The Gen4 ECU appears to be electrically compatible with the Gen3 port, but just a slight change of firmware is needed to make it work - so they will likely offer a Gen4 ECU with a different part number as a retrofit option. For those that want an even more Tesla-OEM approach, Google "Tesla K-ECU CCS" and look for the teslaownersonline thread -- that uses a Korean Gen3 ECU that's basically the same as the original Gen3 ECU, but supports CCS. In that, you only lose cable-button-remote support (can't open the flap using the charge cable button), but otherwise the button works fine, as do all other features. It may also be harder to find that ECU. Really glad to see such a well-made video documenting the upgrade! You can bet I'll be sharing this around. :)

2019 Tesla 3 upgraded without any issues. Worked perfectly! OK, the clips were tricky to get out of the covers in the trunk. Still no idea how to get them out easily. I could have waited a few months for my turn to be upgraded by Tesla, but moving to the Midwest next month and Tesla fast charges are few and far between. Thanks so much!

Thanks for the video. Ditto on having the doors, windows, frunk, and rear trunk open when you disconnect the battery under the seat. I made the mistake of closing the door and almost got locked out of my car. The first plastic trim piece that you remove that is located on the top of the trunk requires that you use a small flathead screwdriver to pop out the center pin on the two black round trim pieces on each end. Don't try to just pull the trim piece off as he does in the video. Additionally the driver's side carpet is held on by another black round trim piece that is under the trunk lip. (not shown in the video either)

Thanks for the video it’s very helpful, I believe you said the full process (ECU and wire harness) applies to cars manufactured before October 2021. Looking at the forums you added in the description the wire harness should be needed for cars manufactured before October 2020 with the Gen 3 ECU. I am looking to try this as soon as I get the ECU I have a 2021 so I should not need the harness.

My 2020 Model 3 LR was built in September 2020 and it is CCS enabled. I bought a CCS adapter from Tesla Korea in May 2022 and have used it successfully a number of times. You may want to double check the dates you are quoting as to when the CCS was included in the factory.

Yes it is! Gives us salvage owners a ton of new options and allows people to start fixing these amazing vehicles instead of relegating them to parts cars or driving them hobbled (AC or CHAdeMO only). I am really looking forward to seeing how Tesla handles its plans to allow non-Tesla vehicles on its Superchargers. It doesn't control the software loads to those vehicles so it is sure to have rebuilt/salvage vehicles on its chargers at that point. Hoping they give up on banning perfectly good Teslas from using their network at that point.

just a heads up, you might not be able to drive before doing a software update. I just did my retrofit on my '18 RWD LR, and the error I had was something about an incompatible software drive control version. I couldn't drive until I did the software update. i also had a third clip that i had to remove from the rear wall of the trunk on the left side before i could get the lining out of the way enough to get to the ECU (same kind of clip as the two that hold the top trim in place).

This happens if you're reusing a previously-flashed ECU -- either from your car or someone else's (used on eBay for example). If you get a used ECU, the car will shut down with a fault and be undriveable until you get the update. Only a "virgin" ECU will still let you drive -- not exactly sure why. But yep - that probably explains why you had a difference there :)

The Tesla CCS to Tesla adapter is limited to about 200 kW. You won't get any higher even if you are at 5% SOC. It's just the limit of the adapter. I have one and tested it on my Model Y and a newer 3 with no problem.

The theoretical limit of the adapter is 150kW - it is rated for 500V and 300A. I believe that is a continuous rating though, which allows it to go above 150kW for limited amounts of time. That being said, 200kW does seem to be the "limit" in most people's experiences

It's actually a function of amps & volts - watts is a result of amps*volts (thus watts/1000 = kW). Stations are often limited to 500 amps -- however, Electrify America has been seen recently doing boosts to 600 amps (!). It would be so much better if the whole industry could stop talking about kW and talk about amps instead. The adapter itself really has no limit. Temperature is the only factor, and since both the Tesla port and the CCS port have temperature monitoring by their respective sides, the only limit is what the station and the car agree on. The adapter just facilitates.

This is the second video I've seen where the EVGo charger is showing a slightly higher rate of charging than the Tesla screen indicates (203 vs. 191). One of them has to be wrong. At this juncture, assuming that the EVGo is reporting incorrectly, they're making a little more money off the charge than they ought to be, no? A little adds up to a lot if they're all doing this...

I think the forum post walks through how to put the car in service mode and flash an update, but it's easiest just to wait for one to become available

As of car software 2022.16.x and the opening of access to Tesla service docs, the procedure to get into Service Mode and request a "software reinstall" is now public. You can access Service Mode by pressing and holding the model name badge of your car on the Software tab, then enter "service" and hit OK. That will enable service mode, where you can then press "Software Reinstall" to start the reinstall (it doesn't download - it just reinstalls the last update). Read and understand all messages (e.g. that the reinstall happens immediately - do it after installing the ECU). Do this sparingly - don't do it to try to fix random faults. You can also use the "service alerts" panel in Service Mode to understand more about any errors you have - the descriptions of any alerts you see are very clear and explain what is wrong and how to fix it. But hopefully you won't need that in the context of this CCS upgrade -- may be useful later for other diagnostics, though!

Great video! One concern would be any potential effect on warranty coverage especially if there was a failure in the charging system. It wasn’t completely clear to me whether there were some ECU’s that were sourced from Tesla while others were from another source (and perhaps not entirely sanctioned under Tesla’s warranty). I don’t have a problem using only Tesla superchargers while on the road, but they are still not everywhere I want to go so the retrofit is very interesting. It’s too bad you have to trick the car into pre-conditioning the battery before charging but I suppose, someday, when everyone can use everyone else’s chargers, that problem will go away.

The warranty issue is definitely a grey area. I did a bit of research on what might void it but couldn't conclude anything, so didn't include it in the video. If something goes wrong, and Tesla can point to the wiring harness and say it's "not approved" then it may be on me to fix anything.

Why did you power down the car? You are not working with any part of the car that carries high voltage, just pull the old one and plug in the new ECU and wire harness.

David Green, You can use the EU CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit (Pre-Refresh version) for Model Ss before June 2016 to get this capability. I have read in some forums that vehicles with Gen 1 charge controllers can not use this modification. I am not sure when the Gen 2 controllers rolled out though so you would have to do some research to see if that is true or not. The EU mod worked great on my 2018 Model S. I just uploaded a video about the process here on KZbin. Happy to chat more if your interested

Kacey Green. If you can get your hands on the EU Model X CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit you are half way there. After that, you are correct, getting the vehicle's software/Gateway Configuration changed to recognize the new hardware is a bit of a chore but not insurmountable. Let me know if you are interested and I can point you in the right direction to get that completed as well. I finished the mod/Config change on my Salvaged 2018 Model S and it has been a game changer for me on road trips!

Significantly more complicated to add to Model S, unfortunately. Being a later S, you may be more likely to be able to have it at some point, however.

You can actually use the European CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit to get CCS1 capability here in North America. I bought the kit for my 2018 Model S on EBay and did the hardware myself. I had to find a friend that was able to make the Software/Gateway configuration changes that were required afterwards so the vehicle would recognize the new hardware. My salvaged Model S now charges at 150kW!

JFROG 544, There is a different modification that will work on your Model X. You have to order the European Model X CCS Combo 2 Retrofit Kit and intsal it on your vehicle. Then you will need someone to help you Make a software/Gateway configuration change. It sounds complicated, but it is possible. i just finished doing the same modification on my 2018 Model S. I posted a video about it if you are interested.
