rev matching break-down: 4 steps 1 clutch in 2 gear down 3 rev 4 clutch out If it is too difficult thinking about the four steps happening super fast, try splitting it in the middle. Clutch in and gear down. you can coast along clutch in without issue. This gives you time to focus on the rev matching and letting the clutch go again :)

Something not learned yet, my mind is thinking that you would increase throttle for higher gear and decrease throttle for a lower gear. If you blip the throttle seems the opposite would happen, btw I'm ok with counter steering. Will experiment with this rev match. Own a HD could help I guess.

I have been doing rev matching when I am going fast and needed a quick response on gearing down aggressively. Rev matching is also a wise choice gearing it up especially up slopes and in jams. Saved my hide a few times to evasively avoid accidents. I do engine braking too especially a slow stop on the red light, behind cars or going down slopes. Depends on your riding style.

I don't know any riders that do rev matching, most of them never heard of it, when your coming to a stop and you ease up on the gas ,and use the brakes or clutch if your stop is more sudden ,the bike slows down automatically so you are going slower for the next downshift so the engine braking is not abrupt anyway, I have never rev matched and had no mechanical problems

Hands down best description of blipping/rev matching on the internet. The one thing I’d like to know: you described rev matching while being on the front break… can the same be done with the rear break instead - why/why not?
@spider121
@spider121 3 жыл бұрын
With rear brake only? You could but, At a decent speed, the rear brake might not be significant. It is not enough to help you slow the bike let say before entering a corner or stopping at a stop loght. and if you were to press harder(rear brake) to slow down, it tends to lock up easier. Hence most of the slowing down will be from the front brake, along with rear brake. That is why we revmatch while applying the front brake. Depending on situation or what you trying to achieve(comes with experience), you might need or might not need to apply the front brake during revmatch.
@spider121

3:30 sorry for sounding like a noob to engines but, this was a super helpful explanation. Had an "ooooh! thats super easy" moment of revelation there. So you're not actually trying to match the revs IN 3rd gear to what it will be in 2nd gear. You're literally just trying to get the free-spinning clutch to rev as fast as your next gear. So potentially you could just hold the clutch in for a full second if you need extra time to match rev, no stress no big deal. Nice.
@spider121
@spider121 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, but that would be too dangerous. When you pull the clutch in for a long time when riding, you are basically free wheeling, its as though you are cruising on neutral gear. And this is very dangerous because you can go quite fast doing this and los control if your bike as there no engine braking whatsoever. In my country free wheeling is a no no, even if its for a few second

There’s just one little thing I don’t understand, everybody says when you downshift don’t let out the clutch super fast or else the bike will jerk and thats not good. Yet when you’re down shifting in the video you pull the clutch in and out in like less than a second 🤔

@evanchivers8915
@evanchivers8915 4 жыл бұрын
Ya dude it depends on how you are downshifting. Letting it out slowly is great when you are letting your RPM match with the gear you just shifted to. If you are rev matching you don’t need to let the clutch out slowly because the gear is now matching the RPM and the bike won’t be throwing itself forwards due to poor shifting
@ronladuke7235
@ronladuke7235 4 жыл бұрын
The whole thing should take less than a second, If your try to let the clutch out slowly the revs will drop down and when the clutch engages the momentum of the bike will rev the engine the bike will jerk.

Yes...is a smooth downshift, but if you want to engage real engine brake, rev matching is not so effective. It’s all about momentum, it will decelerate harder if you are not going on rev match. So I think is a better way to just take a corner or approaching intersection. But if you are in a hard brake situation I recommend doing it the old fashion way.

Lol I saw rev match and thought this was about teaching a group of riders to figure out how to interpret the RPM of a bike near you and learning to match it's rpm range with throttle control. I don't think about the way the bike lurches forward and I have revved during a shift but never knew the term. I just knew that if you down shift on a bike and it lurches a bit then you are probably going a little fast for the gear you're in. Cheers for the riding tip. It sounds like a good way to save your brakes.

You should clear out the order tho... Pull the clutch, Blip and then shift down. Otherwise, the bike will resist the downshift, it will stiffen and try to block you, making you force the shifter down and that's not really pleasant, it doesn't feel good and it isn't smooth either. But if you blip first and then press the shifter down, it's buttery smooth and effortless. You just need to do it seamlessly. Practice makes perfect.
@ropro5402

Very nice video, I would add one correction though. Rev matching does not make the engine braking stronger, it actually makes it weaker for the sake of smoothness and avoiding blocking the wheel. And that's what it's for. Without rev matching, the engine braking is stronger, but less safe.

How does blipping the accelerator help you slow down during a downshift. Doesn't make much sense the accelerator is for speeding up not slowing down
@Emre723
@Emre723 5 жыл бұрын
It's to match the RPM to your downshifted engine. Lower gear requires more RPM to stay at a speed as higher gears. So when you downshift, it will automatically start to slow down, engine breaking, if you dont give it the extra RPM it needs. When you blip the throttle, it gets more RPM, and it stays smooth on the road, same speed with the previous gear, but more RPM
@shadowvilln711
@shadowvilln711 4 жыл бұрын
4K rpms in 6th gear is the same speed as 5k rpms in 5th. (Generally speaking. It’s different for every bike). You wanna bring it up to the rpm to prevent lurching. Then as you slow down the rpms will also drop.

So I just started practicing rev matching I feel like I’m improving but I see videos were riders rev match gears back to back and looks smooth but when I do it sometimes I notice I take slower and longer to rev match between gears because if I drop from 4 to 3 the engine slows down a lot and I feel it because I kinda lunge foward it’s a rough slow down
@DG-ss1gc
@DG-ss1gc 3 жыл бұрын
His explanation is way off, though the crux of it was right. If you drive a manual car and this video confused you (because cars don’t lurch like this) then that’s normal. You see cars used synchronized transmissions , the synchros help the fast spinning teeth in the gear slot into to the slower ones. The purpose of rev matching is to make the synchros job less burdensome thus preserving them. Cars like the civic type r have computerized automatic rev matching - a cool feature. Motorcycles are like race cars, they have SEQUENTIAL transmissions. Rev matching prevents that bogged down lurch, but is a performance technique and not necessary for longevity like with street cars. Why don’t all cars have sequential transmissions? I think the main reason is , as the name suggests the gears must be hit in order , and on the street I often will slip a gear when gearing down or go into over drive after a hard 3rd gear pull to highway speed. If it had a sequential tranny , you’d have to pump that lever through each gear to get to the gear of choice.

Good video & very informative. Question: What if I rev match BUT don't release the clutch for 5-10 seconds?

Would it otherwise be bad for your transmission if you don't rev match! I like to slip the clutch rather than rev match because its slightly more smooth for me.

Clutch it. This is for more advanced riders. A bad clutchless shift on a bike is torture on gears and other stuff
