If all the leaves are brown would you want to just cut the whole thing down or just trim off all the leaves? I am getting a nice moist white when cut into the stem so I have some hope.

@@poetrywithwings hi thanks for your message, without seeing the plant it is difficult to be sure but I would probably just remove the brown leaves and wait until I see some new shoots which could find a few months and then see if I need to cut back any stems back to where the new shoots are growing from … does that make sense?

Would you also snip off floppy green leaves beginning to discolour or just the dead ones? I have a yucca in need of revival, but mine was overwatering, and the soil / root zone was damp, so I have re-potted in a larger pot with 1 part sand, as well as a some small gravel to help drainage

Hi, sounds like you are heading in the right direction, just be careful not to give too much water into the new compost for a few months as it will take a while for the roots to speared into it. Ref the droopy leaves - if they start to go yellow then yes trim them off, but if they are still green they then they are potentially providing energy to the plant via photosynthesis - hope this helps, good luck and please keep us posted Thanks Roger

Hi Judith - thanks for getting in touch, and for your question. Well drained houseplant compost is usually good so that they do not get too wet - some folks mix a soil based compost such as 'John Innes' in with a houseplant compost and perhaps add a little grit for drainage - are you living in the UK?

Hi, I bought a yucca plant with 2 stems in the same pot. It was beautiful for a couple of years, but last year the leaves on one of the stems started drying and eventually it is now bare. At its base there is a sprouting plant. Is that a new yucca cutting? Should I pull out the bare stem? The other stem it was bought with looks fine. The pot is kept in the conservatory. Please help!
@rogthegardener1
@rogthegardener1 Жыл бұрын
Hi Jeanette, thanks for your comment, sorry to hear that one stem is not looking so good, but encouraging to hear that there are signs of new growth lower down … just checking is that new shoot actually coming from the base of the stem that had suffered? It could be that you will get more than one new shoot … so my instinct is to do nothing drastic for a few months, as we move into spring you could give the whole plant some plant food to encourage more new growth and then re-assess. Maybe the top of the ‘dead-ish’ stem could be cut back if it turns soft, but if it is still firm then I would leave it in case you get more shoots from further up the stem.. Make sense?

Hi Pauline - thanks for your comment, if you are in the UK the only problem with repotting is the danger of overwatering while the roots haven't grown into the new compost - so I would only give a little water for the next month or two - once we get into spring the roots will more quickly grow into the fresh compost and you should get more new leaf growth too - I hope there is a happy ending ... please keep us posted, thanks!

Hi, thanks for your comment 😀 I suppose one problem with putting it too near the window is that it could get too hot? I would make sure the compost is always slightly damp (although not soaking wet) and maybe give the plant some general fertiliser to encourage some new growth. You could put it nearer the window for a while but if you get some new leaves (we all hope you do!) you may need to keep the plant away from direct light to avoid scorching the leaves… I hope this makes sense / helps? Hi, thanks for your comment, it is hard to know if your plant needs re-potting without seeing it - but I would not normally advise removing any soil before re-potting (not sure if were considering that?) Now the bottoms leave of very droopy almost damp soggy and brown and the top leaves aren’t droopy but are yellowing I took it out of the vase and noticed water at the bottom which smelled so left it out in its pot now and left it to dry (as the soil was still damp) it’s been too days nothing what should I do? Why are the bottom leaves droopy, damp and brown and top dry, up-right and yellow? Thank you so much hope to hear soon!

@rogthegardener1 Жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment ... I did type up a reply a few days ago but it doesn't seem to have uploaded - sorry Yellowing leaves / can be caused by too much water or too little water ... so it is hard to know if yours is suffering because of being too dry at first or too wet after being outside .... or maybe both? So, it probably needs to be inside somewhere protected from the weather and to allow the soil to dry out ... it may take some time to improve ... an important question .. where are you living because putting the plant outside here in the uk during winter could damage it because it is too cold ... If you could let me know where in the world you are living, and how the plant / soil is looking now we can try and help you Thanks

Hi, thanks for your excellent question, it’s always hard to understand what’s going on with people’s plants when I can’t see and touch them… but if I understand your description correctly it sounds like there is life in those shoots still because of the green leaves so in that case I think I would trim off all those yellow leaves back close to the stem, and see if you can encourage some more fresh green growth (some houseplant fertiliser might might help?) and let us know how you get on, it could take 6 months or more before you get enough new growth to have a noticeable improvement in the plants appearance …. I hope there is a happy ending for you and your plant 😀

Does the trunk grow taller? I got one from a store and it looks like it has a sort of black tar over it. But I think i overwatered it because the new growth looks withered and lots of brown leaves like this one. Should I repot with a dryer soil?
@rogthegardener1
@rogthegardener1 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Audry - thanks for your comment and excellent question! You may be able to tell if it is overwatered by gently pressing your finger into the compost if it is wet then that could be too wet. I am not sure that I would be in a hurry to repot it yet as that can cause even more stress, the key is to allow the compost to dry out ... a couple of questions ... Where do you live? Is the plant outside or inside Is the pot stood inside another pot, or stood in a saucer? In my experience the original trunk doesn't grow taller, but the new shoots develop into 'trunks' after many years ...they can get several feet tall. Hope this helps? Thanks Roger

@rogthegardener1
@rogthegardener1 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Keyla, thanks for your comment, yes it could be too wet, there are few things that can cause leaves to go yellow … I assume it has not got too cold? If we assume it could have got too wet then you need to allow the compost to dry out, which bay take a month or more in the middle of winter … if it is in a light position that may help. Longer term you may want to consider standing the pot on some stones so that any water that runs out of the bottom of the pot is not soaked back up into the compost … I am not sure if that makes sense to you? I did a video about this a few trick years back, I’ll put a link to the video below. Please let us know if this makes helps and how you get on with your Yucca, thank you

Hi Thanks very much for your question, which KZbin translated for me and I hope you will be able to translate my answer too ...? In my experience, once the stem has gone soft it is not going to grow again, but if the stem is hard and firm lower down then I would try cutting the stem where it is still form and there is a chance it will send out new shoots .. you may have to wait a long time (maybe 6 months) to see the new shoots starting to grow. Be careful to not get the compost too wet, especially if you do not have many leaves left on the plant after you have cut it back as that can cause the stem to rot. Hi there, thank you for this video! I’m having a slightly different issue with my yucca. It was thriving in a garden room until our recent cold snap in the UK. I wasn’t able to check on it for a few days as the path was so icy and when I did it was drooping so badly and the newer section at the very top was squidgy. I brought it into the house and have placed it by the window. I also cut off the squidgy section at the top (not sure if that was the right thing to do!) I also repotted as the weight of the dropping top leaves had pulled the whole plant to the side. The remaining leaves are still looking very sad 3 days later and feel limp. The main trunk and older offshoots are firm. Is my poor plant done for or do I just need to be patient with it?

Ah Laura, you have our sympathies! I would keep on cutting out any soft tissue and stem until you have firm stems .. even if they have no leaves left … it may take several months but there is a chance that in spring the firm stems will grow new shoots and you can start again. Try not to give the plant too much water especially as it has been reported because without roots in the fresh compost to suck out the water it can get too wet and cause root rot … Hope this helps? Good luck keep us posted with any progress please 👍

@@罗榆凡 it doesn’t sound good to be honest … not sure what has caused it … I wonder if the soft stems have little or no roots (you could try giving them a very gentle pull up, if it ‘resists’ your pull then you know there are roots and you should leave the stem there but if the stem slides up easily it is likely that there no roots or they are’poor’ - I am not advising this as you could damage any roots that may be there … but it is an option in the future if they look completely dead, just to try and find a possible cause) It sounds like you have done everything right … it is just possible that you may get some new shots lower down those 2 softer stems but possibly not … please keep us posted, if you see any sign of disease such as orange spots on the 2 soft stems then you are probably best to remove them to protect the one remaining good stem - does this all make sense? Sorry I can’t be more help, good luck!

Hi. Good video but is that plastic grass in the background?. One of the biggest threats to wildlife, it holds no environmental benefits and is not recyclable. Please have a rethink.

Hi Thanks for your comment, glad you liked the Yucca section. Yes you do have a point re the artificial grass, we put it down some years ago before the environmental concerns started to grow ... I do understand the concerns but am puzzled why nobody raises concerns about the Indian sandstone slabs we have in our garden and most of the gardens around us seem to have similar slabs .. so I think the scale of potential environmental, and possibly ethical, concerns could be far greater for the use of imported stone slabs because there is much wider / scale of use? I am not trying to divert from the potential issues of artificial grass, we can look at replacing ours in the future, meanwhile we have other areas of the garden with lawns and lots of wildlife friendly planting. Thanks again for raising your concern, Roger

Thank you for the helpful video! I've bought an IKEA yucca few weeks ago and it is only getting worse and worse (indoor). I have moved it to a sunny place, and it will hopefully get better soon. Regarding the dry soil, it happened to me that It was repelling water. So I have submerged it in water for few minutes. The soil is wet after many days so it seems to work

Thanks for your comment - glad you are looking after your plant .. it may take 6 months to really cheer up especially if you are just going into winter as we are here in the UK - where in the world are you?
