Love it! I’ve noticed a connection between top moto and mtb guys having a history in bmx and pump track racing, those guys usually have the best technique and get away with making lines out of what looks like nothing. Efficiency of speed in its purest form

Getting a dirt jumper and riding at pump tracks has made a mahooosive improvement to my trail riding. I’m actually kinda blown away, just wish I started sooner. Also thanks for talking about the awareness of kids and giving them space. I've seen some close calls, usually with young adults / teenagers overtaking little kids at speed. A bigger rider falling on them little rippers can cause serious injury.

Aaron does such a great job in these tutorial videos. There's a lot of information packed into a short time, but it never feels rushed and Aaron explains everything so clearly. Nice safety first section at the end. There's a lot of tutorial video series out there, but think Aaron's are the best. I've been mountain biking since 1994, raced DH in the 90s and still do some enduro multi-day races, and I still get a lot from these videos. Thanks Aaron and good luck for the season.

Really nice that you commented on flat pedals. I am a road cyclist/bike messenger that always runs clipped and also just got a dirt jumper to ride my two local pumptracks. I find it very frustrating that I often get very light on the pedals or lose contact and already wanted to switch over to clipped here as well, but I guess I just need to develop better technique

100%, people develop poor technique with jumping or bunny hopping as they can pull up on the pedals when clipped in. Flats to learn on, race in clips.

A lot of motorcycle and car enthusiasts will tell you that you'll learn more in one track day than you will in years of driving/riding in the twisties. I would have to say riding a pump track does the same for mountain biking. Learning to carry momentum is a game changer on the trails. I went from riding my brakes all through a trail, then when I got a DJ and started hitting Lake Cunningham Action Sports Park, I became so much more faster because not only did I stop comfort braking through trails, I also became much better and confident at cornering. I even became better at rock gardens and pump tracks don't have them. It also helps build stamina for the downhills

I'm picking up mountain biking at age 48, and it definitely seems like I should invest the money in a jump bike and take it to the track. I'm obviously never going to be a pro downhill racer, but I see no reason why I can't aspire to big jump lines!

you're more ambitious than me. I'm 39 and just started learning to jump, but I don't think I'll ever hit those big ones. I really wish I could, they look fun as hell, but they also look like any small mistake would result in a long hospital stay and no more riding for a very, very long time.

@dummkompf

that's not something that's really up to personal opinion. I mean anyone can do what they want but the general rule is pretty well established because it's what works. on flat corners you drop the outside foot, on berms you keep your feet level. the turns at pump tracks are all berms, so you would keep your feet level there.

Not a single (public) pump track within hours of where I live or a community that would ever go for it, sadly. And there is no reason why, since the area is great for MTB. It's like nobody cares about bikes at all here. You could count the trails worth the climb within 50 miles on one hand. So I doubt I'll be getting any good practice in soon.

Everybody who has a bike should be riding these pump tracks if they can access one, but for anybody thinking of buying a dirt jump mountain bike to use for riding pump tracks, you should carefully consider if you would be better off with a BMX bike. I have dirt jump mountain bikes and BMX bikes, I never ride the dirt jumpers at the concrete pump track, they're flexy, weak, delicate, expensive, and too long. Its a lot more fun on my BMX, and easier for me to generate speed. If I was buying a bike to ride pump tracks, definitely BMX for me personally.
