I remember hitting my first steep black jump because I was one of the better jumpers on my MTB team. I remembers coming right at it knowing I had the skill level to clear this steep gap jump but the second I came to the lip I forgot to do my technique stuff and I literally thought I was never gonna see my family again...

Great vid, bro: another tip: COMPRESSION! Make sure your compression is dialed in your fork. Your fork tends to dive on steeper lips just from the g-forces at speed. And i promise you'll be in for a bad time if this happens. TDLR: stiffen up your suspension

Yea stiff suspension is good. And the types of people who run their suspension soft all the time, to the point it’s that noticeable on jumps, I recommend focusing on building more foundation skills before even touching steeper jumps.

I find that stiff suspension helps with popping the jump higher. Soft suspension doesn’t feel good on steep jumps but I’ve never had it create major issues. What kind of a bad time have you experienced?

would like a little more detail on body position for approach, transition, take off, float, landing

You're overthinking it, I've never thought about any of these things. Use this as a base and work your way up to steeper and steeper jumps until it clicks. The biggest thing is learning how to understand transitions and when to shift your body weight, this will come naturally via muscle memory with experience. One thing I suggest to people is to take a bmx bike or dirt jump bike to a skatepark and see how high you can ride up at 1/4 pipe (preferably a mellow fly-out), and then air out of it to flat because no transition is required. Once you're comfortable try fully airing a 1/4 pipe. This is more technical than most steep dirt jumps but very consistent and predicable. It will help the motions click in your mind for boosting and nosing into anything.
