So you've made the drop, and are setting up for the tube, but are you positioning yourself right to drive through, and make it out? Lets break it down, and find out!
Before we get started, know that this is a VERY IN DEPTH look into different types of Barrel Riding. This isn't something you can learn in 5minutes, or even the 30min in this video. I dove into as much as i could, explaining everything you need to know, to get yourself through barrels of all shapes. It works for me, and I hope it can help you too!

...WHAT WE'LL TALK ABOUT...
1. RIDING HIGH AND TIGHT BARRELS
2. RIDING HEAVY BARRELS
3. RIDING WAVES THAT DO BOTH
4. NEGOTIATING THE FOAMBALL
5. EQUIPMENT

When paddling out, how far down do you swim when getting sets on the head?

Brett, would you be interested in coaching people through the internet?
@brettbarley
@brettbarley 5 жыл бұрын
@@MrGottaGo depends on how heavy the wave is, or if you are over reef or sand. Depends whether you NEED to get under the wave, or if it'd be safer to get blown inside some so as to not wear the next one on the head as well.
@brettbarley

@@jhchnc honestly... can touch on barrel riding and late takeoffs, but trying to describe and explain anything else would be irresponsible. my technique in other aspects of surfing could use coaching as well, and i'm not a balanced enough surfer to properly provide insight into other areas of coaching. Honestly... even trying to put into words the barrel riding technique, was a challenge.

- Jesus dude, there's probably a hundred guys on youtube who have done surfing "tutorials" and there are exactly two that are even remotely worth watching and they are both your barrel riding guides. This must have taken a ton of time to put together and it really shows, it's excellent. Your frame by frame breakdowns are far and away the best analysis of any single waves I've ever seen. It's also super helpful that you don't just explain what you're doing, but what you're avoiding and why. - I rarely comment on videos but I felt like I had to show some support! Keep it up! Huge fan of your videography skills on top of your surfing.

some of the most memorable surfing moments burned into my brain are from surfing the Light House when it was in its original position, back in the 80's. Fading off the bottom and standing straight up in the barrel. Love your videos and love Cape Hatteras. Keep up the good work. looking forward towards seeing the new stuff when you get back into the swing of it.

For beginners, getting out there is half of it. If you get time would love your humble opinion about simply getting out (thru it)? Board ditching (no channel) in 8'+ bch break waves & over reef. Straight panic at the disco. Essentially, how to cope with all that violence? lol

I will add if you are learning this don't worry about being super deep, actually put be half in half out unless you are lucky but this gives your mind a idea of how to shape your body to fit smaller tubes even bigger ones. That is actually really important or the lip will clip you. That is your goal to begin learning and getting comfortable and altering your body stance for differing barrels. You will be surprised how many people freak out being in a barrel especially if they didn't expect it to allow them to near stand up and you begin prempting coming out and getting anxipus you will blow it which you will in thst mindset. Learn in closeouts and you will greatly speed up how to do this. Also a closeout will teach you that wiping it in the barrel in most cases is no way as scary as you think and if you fall punch low into the face and you probably won't even get a flogging maybe lol. But being inside usually doesn't flog you up as much as straightening out and not timing it. Surfing closeouts at a size you are comfortable in and if you really want to learn you have to do rhe hours, in bad to ok waves. We all do regardless of skill, magic surf is not a everyday thing just because you become more skilled. Practicing in closeouts also frees up spots which are really crowded in which you should leave to more experienced surfers and you get less waves regardless. Too finish, barrels are fun ok but I often found and personally enjoyed riding the face of the wave carving and going fast, reall fasr to me this way fun than a barrel and the speed feels like your flying but it requires good waves. So don't stop surfing the face just for barrels that it is heaps of fun and this is all about fun. Now socially this may work in your favour. If one of the local guys in your area see you are learning in closeouts well that person will think cool, this guy understands learning to surf a tube in closeouts is good manners and the local good break he realises it's not where you learn. Agree with the tail shape rounded tails do the trick to. Fins well I have used plastics lol, if it's tiny and you are a bigger guy try a quad as it's a little faster but thruster agree is the most stable. I would try all set ups and twin fins can be heaps fun. But thruster was my go to on good surf even if not big. That middle fin creates so much drive and ability to pivot, yep it's good. See how bikes lean when taking corners? That is what you need to learn as well, it is the exact same forces at play. I don't care, I suffer from bad unjuries and have quit surfing by choice😮

Buddy, this is another tutorial so on point ! Can you clarify something for me Take off positioning/angle of take off. I have a hard time attempting to put myself under the lip to take off. It just always looks like the wrong place to be. I visualise paddling into and breaking the lip on the take off. So it's a completely different mindset I think. Is there another way to visualise or understand the take off positioning and angle to take off?? Is such a valuable tool you're providing with your easy to understand explanations. Thanks heaps👍🏽. Keep them coming legend.

Great video, Brett! :) Can you do more of these tutorial videos, but for less technical surfers who want to get better their surfing technique? that's exactly my case. I already surf consistently, but am having a hard time at getting good references for further developing my technique, especially on backside surfing. For example, I need to work my board positioning and balance (as I tend to overstretch when surfing) for both backside and frontside surfing, do you have some cool tips and tricks? How to do a good carve? and a roundhouse cutback? How to do different levels of snapturns? How to get started on doing Airs? Thanks a lot!

The hardest part of progressing your surfing and when trying to teach others what to do, is getting people to remember the little tips you've tought them when they are actually going for a wave/riding it. It's so easy in surfing to get caught in the moment and have everything you've ever learnt go right out the window!
