I filmed this 1 month before the pandemic shut everything down. When the pandemic hit, my company -- like every other business in CA -- closed its offices, and a few months later, we let our lease go. I moved back to my home in Burbank (outside of LA). I love it here, don't get me wrong! But I really do miss San Francisco and the cable cars. As I mention in the video, I lived near the Powell Street line, and in the winter, I would take it home every night after getting off the BART. Sigh ... like all of you, I miss the before-times.

I and my girlfriend at the time visited SF in 2012, but it was early in the tourist season, the last weekend of June, so the crowds for Cable cars weren't that bad, even in the fat of the day, if you will......but at night really is the best time, for many reasons....beautiful and romantic! The 3-day MUNI Pass was an outstanding value! We left the car parked at the hotel the whole weekend (for $15/day) and rode everything with a MUNI symbol on it as many times as we wanted, with only a moderate amount of walking....it's a fantastic way to go about it! Lots of good memories of that adventure...including the Cable Cars and their excellent example of 19th Century Engineering and ingenuity! Great video with wonderful tips!

I've lived here 10 years and I just took the cable car for the first time last month when it was free. Instead of standing in line at Powell & Market, walk up two blocks to the next stop and you'll be able to get on with no line. They always leave a few seats open.

My first trip to San Francisco was spring break from an eastern college in 1969. The last day of my visit I bought two 6-packs of Coors beer to take back to my roommates, to a state where Coors wasn''t sold. Toward evening, returning to the Sir Francis Drake Hotel I was on the Powell St. cable car riding up the hill when the cable car came to a sudden stop. The brakeman said that had been happening all day and it would probably be 20 minute to a half hour delay. Some people got off but most of us just waited patiently. Soon a couple of joints appeared and were passed around, shared even by the conductor and brakeman. If it was party time I was gonna enjoy a beer so I opened one up and asked if anybody else wanted one which left me with one six pack instead two. OK easier to pack for the flight home. One of my favorite SF experiences typical of the wonderful culture there in 1969.

What a great story!!! You didn't happen to go to Eastern in KY did you? That would be too much of a coincidence. I went to rival Morehead, and bringing Coors back from places was a big deal. Hi David, sorry for the late reply! San Francisco has a lot of micro-climates. So it's not like a lot of cities where the temperature is about the same regardless of whatever part of the city you're in. Mid October will generally be cool, autumn weather, usually not higher than 75 or lower than 55. I would wear tops with sleeves, and carry a hoodie with you. I kind of felt like a bag lady sometimes, because I had my purse (bag 1), and a cloth bag (like a re-usable grocery bag) with my hoodie in it (bag 2). So even if I wasn't fashionable, I was always comfortable! Enjoy your trip to SF!

Back in the 50s, before the cable cars were overwhelmed by tourists during daylight hours, people used them to commute. At the Market Street turnaround, adult male riders who wanted to speed things along would help the gripmen turn the car and push it off the turntable. On receiving the "OK" from the gripmen, they (and everyone else) boarded the car. Women were not allowed to stand on the running boards, nor did I see any women helping handle the car on the turntable. What do they call the car operators now?

@JasmineApple 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Hasnida, How exciting to be coming to San Francisco! I hope I can answer your questions about public transportation. Muni is the San Francisco public transportation system, and it includes busses, cable cars, and muni trains. BART is the county-wide train system. Clipper is a card that can store fares to be used on Muni or BART. Usually, the cable car is the most expensive fare, at $8.00 per ride. But for the month of August, it's free, since they just started operating them again. Normally, I would say when you come to SF, you'll want to get a Visitor Passport, which is unlimited rides on muni only for a single price. A 1-Day Visitor Passport is $13 if you get it on the muni mobile app, or $24 if you get a paper passport or put it on your clipper card. A 3-Day Visitor Passport is $31.00 if you get it on the Muni Mobile app, or $36.00 if you get it on paper or your Clipper Card. A 7-Day Visitor Passport is $41.00 from the Muni Mobile app or $47.00 on paper or on your Clipper Card. So normally, this is a really good deal, particularly if you want to ride the cable car several times. But if you're coming at the end of August, since the cable car is free, you might want to just add something like $20.00 to your clipper card and use it on the busses or muni trains. Each muni ride is $2.50. If your trip is extending into September, then you might want to consider the Visitor Pass. The muni website is www.sfmta.com/ and you will see all of this info there as well. You might also want to get the muni app to get fares or search for routes. On the web page is the Trip Planner, where you can put your starting point (I used Union Square to answer your questions), and the ending point, and muni will show you the best times. From Union Square to Lombard Street, there are a few ways to get there, but the most fun is via the cable car. You will get the cable car at Powell Street & Market Street (where the car turns around), and you want the Powell/Hyde line, not the Powell/Mason line. Lombard Street is at Hyde and Lombard Street, and the Powell/Hyde cable car stops right there. If you're not able to get on the cable car, you can take the 45 muni bus. You'll get on at Sutter & Stockton, in the direction going into the tunnel. You'll get off at Union Street & Hyde Street. You'll walk up Hyde Street a couple of blocks until you get to Lombard. This would be free on the cable car or $2.50 on the 45 bus. To get to the Painted Ladies, you'll go to Market Street at Powell. You're going to take the 5 bus or the 5R bus. The "R" stands for Rapid, which means fewer stops. You'll get off at McAllister & Fillmore. You'll walk 1 block in the same direction the bus was going to Steiner Street. You'll turn left on Steiner, then walk 2.5 blocks to the painted ladies. Alamo Square Park is on your right, right across the street from the painted ladies. So you can go up into the park and get some great photos of the painted ladies! The fare is $2.50 for the 5/5R. Getting to the Golden Gate Bridge is probably the most challenging, because you have to transfer busses. You want to take the 38R Geary Boulevard bus. You're going to start at the stop on Geary (across from Union Square) at Powell Street. You'll get off at Park Presidio Boulevard. Then you are going to take the 28 North Point + Van Ness Bus from Park Presidio to the Golden Gate Bridge. Each fare is $2.50, so $5.00 to get there, and this will be about 45 minutes - 1 hour. I hope this answers your questions! Have a fabulous time, and let me know how it was!

If you want to get off on any of the stops along the way, whats the way to do it?
@JasmineApple
@JasmineApple 2 жыл бұрын
I tell them when I get on what my stop is, and then remind them 1 stop before that I want to get off at the next stop. My stop was Bush Street, which is almost to the top of the hill from Powell. In the evenings, they are likely to keep going to the top without stopping. If it's really crowded and they can't take any more people, they're likely to keep going, also. So at Sutter Street, I'd always tell the guy, "Don't forget, my stop is Bush!" In the 7 years I lived there, they only missed it once!

@JasmineApple

Part of the allure of the cable cars is the history, how long ago they were created & how old the system is. But it's not a practical system to build, which is why there are (almost) no others in the US or around the world. It's prohibitively expensive to build, and it would not have the same level of ridership. SF spends its transportation dollars on more efficient ways of getting around the city, like the muni trains & electric buses.

I watched this to get practical information about how to pay for the ride! Can you flag the car down anywhere or do you have to start at the beginning of the line? Cash only? How do you let the conductor know you want to get off?
@JasmineApple
@JasmineApple 2 жыл бұрын
Great questions! There are stops along the route, just like busses. There'll be a sign at each stop, and there's a big yellow X in the street that shows where the cable car stops. Sometimes it's in the middle of the intersection, sometimes it's before the stoplight, and sometimes after a stoplight. If you get on without a ticket, I believe you would need to pay with cash. The easiest way to get a ticket would be to download the Muni app, and you could purchase a ticket that way. If you're going to be in SF for a few days, you might want to get a day or 7 day pass, which will give you unlimited rides on the cable cars, as well as on any other muni busses or trains. I hope this helps! Let me know if you have more questions!
@JasmineApple
@JasmineApple 2 жыл бұрын
Oops! I forgot to answer your last question. If it's busy, they stop at every stop. If it's not so busy, you just tell him where you want to get off. If you are getting on somewhere along the route, I always raise my hand, so he knows I want to get on. Sometimes, they don't stop if they don't think anyone is going to get on or off. Enjoy!

is the muni pass what you load on to your clipper card??? trying to figure out the multi day thing...thanks.
@JasmineApple
@JasmineApple Жыл бұрын
Yes, you can load a muni pass onto the clipper card. The clipper card can also be used for bart. Muni is for the city of SF, & bart is for the entire bay area. You can also download the muni app & use that, although you have to show the app to an attendant before you can enter the station vs. tapping the clipper card. There's supposed to be an attendant always at every stop, but my experience is that this isn't always the case. But if you buy a 3 day or 5 day pass, & you're planning to use it for just the cable car, then the app is fine to use. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!

@@JasmineApple so our plan is stay at westin airport the night we arrive (so convenient). next morning, head in to city via BART, get off at embarcadero (end of the line, correct?) and either walk or take street car/ light rail up to the grand hyatt at union square. from there, we will branch out and explore for two days. on the third day, we will make our way either by public transport or uber or taxi to pier 27 for cruise. a week later we arrive back and will take BART back to airport to stay at the westin again for the night before our flight back the next morning. our plans are very loose, but chinatown one day and the ferry bldg/ wharf one day. we are old and nap in the afternoons. lol. so....i am guessing unless we see something we want to come back and revisit, we will just hang around the area around the airport or maybe explore something else you might suggest down in that area.
@JasmineApple
@JasmineApple Жыл бұрын
Sounds like a great plan! But I have some tweaks for you. First, embarcadero isn't the end of the line for bart. After that, it heads under the bay and over to Emeryville & beyond. You'll want to get off at Powell street instead of the Embarcadero, though. Union Square is on Powell Street, and it would be a 2-3 mile walk back from the Embarcadero. So get off at Powell -- that's the start of the cable car -- and walk up to Union Square. it's just 2-3 blocks. If the cable car isn't busy, you can ride that up. The Ferry Building is at the Embarcadero. When you're ready to see that, walk back down to the Powell street station, but don't go into the station. Instead, walk across Market Street and take the historic F line -- that's one of the historic street cars. That will take you directly to the Embarcadero/Ferry Building. If you want to go to Fisherman's Wharf on the same trip, then hop back on the F line, which will take you straight there. Chinatown is only about 3 blocks from Union Square, so that will be an easy walk for you. Also, there's a lovely seating area and fountain behind the Apple store, if you want to get coffee and enjoy sitting outside. I can't tell you how many hours I've spent there! I hope you have a fun time! SF is a great place to visit!

If you go back let me know! The Cable Car is normally $8.00 for each ride. It's free this month, because they just started running them again. But if you come to SF, I would suggest instead of paying for each ride separately you can get a 1 day passport for $13.00, a 3 day passport for $31.00 or a 7 day passport for $41.00. This gives you unlimited access to all of muni, including cable cars, street cars, busses & the muni trains to get pretty much anywhere in the city. It's a much better deal than paying for each fare one-by-one.

Hi Victor, Yes, you can see the schedule hours on the Muni app, but it's kind of buried. Here's how to get there. Open the MuniMobile app. At the bottom, tap on Trip Tools. Then tap on Plan a Trip. This takes you to the Muni web site. In the upper right corner, tap on the 4 horizontal lines. This displays their menu options. Tap on Getting Around. This page gives you the options for how you want to get around. You want to choose the Muni option. The next page looks like you're on the same page, but you're not. Scroll down, and you'll see a section called "Routes & Stops." Tap on "Routes & Stops." Now scroll down, and you'll all the different muni lines listed. You'll want either Powell / Hyde Cable Car, Powell / Mason Cable Car, or the California Cable Car. The 2 Powells lines go from Market Street to Fisherman's Wharf & back. Yeah, they still do it that way. I was waiting in line one night in the drizzling rain, & a cable car came down, but didn't quite make it onto the turntable. The conductor turned to the 6-7 of us in line & said something like, "It's stuck, would anyone like to help push it?" I started laughing, because I thought he was joking. He said, "I'm not joking, it's really stuck." So about 5 of us put our backs against the car & pushed!!! I wish I had had a chance to get my camera out, but it was raining, & no one wanted to stand in the rain waiting for me to get my camera out, & I didn't want to miss the one & only chance I would ever get to help push the cable car! It was heavy!! Once it's on the turntable, the 2 conductors can manage it.

I thought you live in Los Angeles?

I do. But there was a few years before the pandemic that my company relocated to the bay area. I own my home in burbank, and I also had an apartment in downtown SF. I started my channel while I lived in SF about 6 months before the pandemic hit. When it was clear that we weren't going to reopen our offices any time soon, we let the lease go, & I came back to burbank for good. I love LA, I love my home, but I loved SF, too. In LA, you MUST have a car. In SF, a car was more a hinderance. I left my VW in Burbank parked at my condo, & walked or took public transportation everywhere in SF. I lived close to the Powell cable car line, & rode it A LOT!!! It was a very different lifestyle than LA. I put my SF furniture in storage, wth a flicker of hope that we would reopen our offices again. But that will never happen. During the pandemic, everyone scattered across the country, so we all work from home now. I'll have to deal with my stuff from storage soon - definitely not an adventure I'm looking forward to!

The streetcars you see are the style that appeared in 1941 in St, Louis, MO. with small oval windows. In 1946 til 1952 when the last ones were made here in the U.S. used a larger oval window above the regular window. Some had blinker type doors and others had folding doors that were either mechanical or by compressed air were operated. Chicago and Boston had the blinker type doors. These modern streetcars were named the PCC Trolleys.
