How To Rig And Load Pack Boxes On Your Pack Animal, My Favorite Method

I show you my favorite way to rig and hang pack boxes on your pack animals. I use decker hooks but I rig them differently. I leave my straps long and hang the hooks on the opposite side that the boxes hang. It gives a better angle and allows the box to hand higher and better on the side of your pack animal. I put the straps behind the bars to keep the boxes from swinging forward going down steep hills. In the next video I teach you about top packs and roping your top pack and boxes down.

Great Video! There at the end I was thinking..."I'm not sure I like that hook through the bars, I'd go in front" Then when you said about problems downhill....100% Right! I didn't think of that! I miss packing and not sure I'll ever get to do it again, but I will remember this trick!

OK, Ive said it before and I'll say it again. Where were you when I started packing 30 years ago!. I started with llamas in the early 90;s, a lot of your stuff is very applicable to llamas. Got horses 15 years ago. Daughter on the equestrian team. Mules not an option. We always used saddle panniers because we wanted to be able to ride when we needed. Had to do some modifications to keep things in order. Balance is critical. Again balance is critical. Your Idea for hanging the scale is brilliant!!! Cant wait for the top pack video. I hate top packs. Im mean I really hate top packs. It's hard to get them balanced correctly. My packing days are likely down or close to it. Horses getting old.Im getting old. Dont want to get new ones. I love them to death, have had many great adventures!!!!!! Keep teaching if you can!!!

Thanks for your comments, I started with saddle panniers too and I still occasionally use them. Sorry you hate top packs, I on the other hand love em. They’re the cherry on top for me. Once again balance is key. Many try to put too much weight on top which is no bueno. Video will drop Tuesday when I’m 22 miles in the backcountry looking for deer. Great to hear from ya, thanks!

@@idahomountainbuilt Have a good safe hunt!. We stayed at a lodge at Henrys Lake in sept. The owner was packed in someplace hunting. His horse tipped over and landed on him. Broken hip, ribs too I think, almost DRT. Like flight ou of there. Always tried to put the lightest weigh stuff in. the top, just hard to get it balanced . Packed out a few rocks into and out of camp on occasion.

I’ve got a question for you sir. When you are using decker hooks and you don’t have a top pack, do you still use a lash cinch to keep the hooks on in case the pack animal bucks or jumps an obstacle? Thanks
