How to Rig the Neko Rig and Where to Fish It

The Neko Rig remains a hot new presentation and only seems to grow in popularity as anglers give it a try. Wired2Fish's Ryan DeChaine walks us through one of his favorite hook, line and worm rigging configurations using proven tackle, then takes it to an uncharted rough patch of gravel and rock found while side imaging. Multiple bites and a 100% hookup ratio support his claim that this system is a must-try when bass aren't responding to bigger and/or more aggressive lures like jigs and crankbaits.

I finally had a chance to use the Neko Rig last week but only for 30 minutes. I just used a regular screw and a weedless wacky hook. Caught two large mouth bass- the largest being 17.5 inches. Was using it in 6-2 feet of water. I was really impressed with it.

If you actually grab some meat of the worm through the oring, you'll keep more baits

If you insert the hook in to the worm some as you go under the o-ring, you'd save the worms on hooked fish!

Does neko rigging only work on a hard bottom? Sand and rock it seems to work fine. But what about ponds and lakes that have weeds and muck on the bottom?

This wouldn't work in waters that have weeds on the bottom, the hook would collect it and it would gum it up. IF the weeds are short, you might be able to get away with hopping it up and down to try and avoid the weeds, but the rig seems to be geared towards hard bottom.

He Jeremiah. I do the same exact nail weight-style rigging in soft bottom areas, but instead of the exposed hook, I use an offset worm hook Texas Rigged at the opposite end of the nail weight. It slips through cover and gets to the bottom where it can be worked completely weedless.

Are you using braid with a flouro leader or just flouro? In the description you posted a link for braid so I suspect you are using a flouro leader. Thanks

Thank you for the video.....will give the Neko rig a try. About a month ago, found out there are some ponds w/bass, outside of Sparks, NV. Been using the wacky rig with either a full or 1/2 of a nightcrawler and find myself catching/releasing a lot of small ones....length of my hand or smaller. Ponds (I'm told) are 8'-12' deep, though there's one section that's suppose to be 60' deep. Biggest problem is weeds.....lots and lots of weeds. Have you tried/video taped fishing a pond with no moving water with a lot of weeds?

Hi, try this same Neko system in the pond, but instead of the exposed hook, use a Texas Rigged offset work hook at the end opposite of the nail weight. The system becomes 100% weedless. you make nice videos in terms of watching you catch fish, and while you are instructional in a broad sense, find that unlike most instructional channels you tend to be stingy in disclosing details about what you are doing. There are so many variables in fishing I don't think it will blow your cover to say how long a worm you are using, and maybe you chose it. You didn't really discuss how you were working the worm, or why. You started the vide talking about fishing "deeper" and talked nail weight size but you never did say what depth you were fishing. If we were schooled and knew what the heck some of us were doing, we wouldn't be spending our time learning from pros like yourself. I'm trying to spend time on the water to figure out as much as I can on my own. Just consider what I've said because its not hard to find videos with guys who can catchem good!

Hi Genario, I haven't, but have several good early ice season largemouth spots where I think it would work with downsized finesse worms. Good suggestion and something we're interested in trying. Thanks, -Ryan
