Great video, I recently started kayak fishing and I am falling in love with it. A lot of good tips in this video that I will incorporate with my kayak. I primarily fish the Central California Coast and recently started my channel focusing on that. I have been following your series of fishing up the California Coast and look forward to the remaining videos. If you ever need a buddy to fish with in the Bay Area, let me know!

Thank you so much for making your videos, I really enjoy them and your explanations for WHY you do what you’re doing. Please don’t forget that there are women kayak fishing too. I have a sweet dry bag and understand how important that is... going to start trying all this in November, lake fishing. Couldn't buy an NRS Chinook, they don't have my size (I'm not small enough, lol) and went with the Extrasport Evolve Angler Personal Flotation Device in green (good prices). Will be renting a kayak in the beginning. Great advice Robert.

I know you mentioned your drift sock for slowing yourself down, but you can also use it to slow down a big fish by adding more drag if he's pulling the boat. A guy up in Mass was looking for a way to slow down big bluefins and that was my suggestion to him and not long after he was able to get a massive tuna on his kayak without getting pulled seven miles. My buddy in Florida has since used his to help with landing tarpon to keep from getting drug miles down the beach. they are really handy as long as you have it on short lines so that you don't get tangles if the fish doubles back on you.
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
+jeremy pierce great tip that I should have mentioned, I do that all the time. Even when I don't plan on using it to drift, I always have it offshore in case I hook a big shark or a marlin or something of that nature. Definitely requires some extra juggling though once the fish is close. At that time I try to pull it up if possible, but it isn't always.

Robert Field i have had a crappy year we lived in the city two weeks before we move to our new apartment in the burbs took family away camping while we was gone someone broke into our storage and took everything all my fishing gear rods reels everything even my new kayak i used couple of times. I have a wife and kids so it took me forever to get what i had . They even took a 8 dollar bait bucket i have been saving for a bit for my first kayak. When i got out there in the kayak fishing it was like everything in life disappears for the couple of hours i was out there used it 3 times now i have to start over. I know it will be years till i get another kayak just wish some people worked for their own stuff instead of stealing mine i literally have nothing so depressing.I know nobody cares i was just venting lol. Great video Rob. I'm new to yak fishing. I've watched this video a couple of times in the past three months, excellent. I lost a Gopro with the Railblaza, tough lesson learned about leashing everything; I checked the slip lock near the camera before going for the underwater shot, it was the second knuckle that was in the unlocked position, ouch. I've since leashed all the knuckles and Gopro attaching screw with zip ties. How do you ensure those locking clips on the Railblaza dont cause you to lose a Gopro?

One thing I'd really like to do someday is do a week long trip down a river like you did down the devils river in Texas. So I would love it it you could share what you pack when you go on a trip like that. Really any tips for planing a trip like that would be helpful. It seems like it would be difficult to be able to pack enough supplies in a kayak to survive a week on the river.

Oh, the Ambush Tackle Bag. No, they won't both fit. The Livewell takes up most of the tankwell in the Outback and Revo. I can barely jam my Bison Cooler Soft Pak into the space between. There's some space behind the livewell but hard to reach and definitely not enough for the Ambush.

Robert Field Completely not for me to be honest. Im actually going to start kayak fishing for fish that live in backwater scenarios. Mostly small river/creek fishing. I may also use it to target some decent crappie and Catfish and for some inshore saltwater stuff. Its more about the gear I use and going through the waves.

Bought the NRS pilot knife after viewing this video. Was under the impression that NRS was an American company and assumed their products were also made in the US. Especially considering the $50 price with shipping. The knife seems relatively well made but a little heavier than I expected. Disappointed that what I thought was a 'made in America' brand is using cheap overseas labor and mark-ups to turn a profit.
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
+Michael Morgan sorry you were disappointed. They are an American company, but that doesn't mean they use 100% Made-in-USA components or products. I also don't think working with manufacturers overseas necessarily means it was cheap labor or an excessive mark-up. It could mean that, sure, but NRS gear is quality. If it being made overseas is a deal breaker for ya, that's a personal decision and one that I respect.

When using the GoPro on the ActionHat, do you use the skeleton case to get the best audio? Or are you running the waterproof case and the proximity to your lips smacking allows for such good audio? As always, thanks for the quality content and ability to form long string, coherent sentences - its not easy.

+Tim Ward haha I like "One Take Jake"d this whole video as fast as possible because it was HOT. I was sweating profusely by the end of it. I typically run the Hero 4 on my head with the waterproof soft plastic back. It's not waterproof very deep but if my head is deep underwater, something is very wrong haha. The Hero 5 also has much improved audio which would be good for the ActionHat.

I have a question about your Lowrance depth finder. I currently have the Hook 7 on my bass boat, and want to put it on my kayak also when using it. What happens if you take a swim and the unit gets submerged long enough to get back upright? Great channel! Subscribed!!
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 6 жыл бұрын
They should hold up to being submerged just fine. Shouldn’t take more than 30 seconds or so to get her righted. But they’re all sealed units so they should be fine unless you leave them under for a while.

Thumbs up. How simple the solution for boat noise taking over the audio! You ever look into something like Outex for waterproofing the camera outside the pelican case? Can't say I've used them but reviews are good, just an idea. Curious if you are catching any flak from the other "seasoned" kayak folks in your circle for giving up the trade secrets? Now off to google action hats and hope they ship to Canada.

+Denver Deschenes I don't worry too much about the camera outside of the case. I have insurance on it. And I've never caught any flak to my face, and quite frankly if someone got upset over me trying to help people learn, they can shove it. No secrets here, always happy to help share what little knowledge I've accrued over the years.

I will be adding the camera grip on my kayak too for better footage. I already have a Scotty attachment. May have to add a second for other angles. Another reason I liked your video was you talked bout the action hat that floats in the water even if it has a gopro attached. I often kayak with a hat mounted gopro and just lost one of my hats on Saturday (thankfully the gopro was not attached). Thanks again and keep up the great content.

Hi Robert, I am just starting to review and research ocean fishing kayaks and so far the Hobie Mirage Pro Angler 14 is my favorite for many reasons. I have a lifetime of inshore and offshore fishing experience and kayak fishing experience as well but I haven't yet tried to fish the ocean in one. I will be fishing the east coast of Florida and putting in at the beach. I would like to know your thoughts about this yak and if you think it would be good for my mission or if you would recommend something else. Thanks!
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 6 жыл бұрын
I think the Hobie Outback is better for offshore, but the PA is great for inshore. It will do okay offshore as long as it’s not too rough and the surf isn’t too bad.

Nice, great episode. I'm obviously just starting out filming so this actually helps alot with how to rig camera booms et cetra. I was thinking about wasp cams rigged with their waterproof power cords running to a dedicated battery source, but I'm thinking that would rule out the ability to swing the camera boom. Just curious what's the battery run time/management like with Gopros? Meaning how often do you have to change out batteries?
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
I know some guys that hard wire 'em. GoPros too, you just have to DIY the case a bit. Not the new Hero 5 though. Batteries last maybe 90 minutes of filming. I buy some extended battery backs that last 6 hours. Search Amazon for re-fuel gopro and you'll find em. Only for Hero 3/4 though.

Ok, so this is likely 2 years late but thanks for this video. I'm wondering how you (1) sync the footage between your multiple GoPro's if you're using the audio from your hat cam (explained in another video), and (2) your editing process and the software tools you use for that?

Robert can you do a video on everything you need after purchasing a kayak like a scupper plug
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
Well man it's really a personal choice for a lot of that. To use your example, I never use scupper plugs. But plenty of guys do. It'd be hard to go into THAT many details without it being an hour long video. I can definitely do another one for, say, freshwater instead of offshore. Show some different products I use. I'll think about it some more.

Nice setup, gave me some good ideas. Hey I was about to buy a used Hobie Outback but just saw the release of the new Compass; were you able to get a glimpse while at their headquarters, if so will there be a review soon?
@YakFishField
@YakFishField 7 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen it in person or gotten it on the water yet. Looks solid, basically just a dumbed down Outback for less money. I'm glad they have something more affordable now. Hobie doesn't really make bad products so I'm sure it'll be nice. If I get my hands on one I'll do a full review.

@YakFishField

Thanks man. I don’t think it’s suited for offshore. Thermoformed kayaks aren’t as durable and it’s pretty bare bones. Might be worth spending more for something else.
