It works better if you wrap a little bit of electrical tape around your index finger so you get a smoother slide on splintery boards and keep from getting splinters .

@@keepmakindust I used this years ago making a lot of decks . I got so I could make a 12 foot rip ( back when lumber had length to it ) fairly easily and manage to keep my cut line straight . I also found that electrical tape worked better than band aids for minor cuts because it was able to keep the wound closed and allow the wound to knit easier rather than fall off like Band aids always did on the job . The medical profession would probably shriek at the thought of this practice today .

Thanks for watching and I hope you use this method I’m afraid I’m part of the old school guys because I use this regularly in fact I used it today but there is a lot of people out there that send some pretty harsh judgement because they believe it’s “ not safe” and hat happens to the carpenters walking top plates and using this method those guys that were fearless and though…. been doing it since I was a beginner. just don't be a retard. that's the key. it's a common practice to use your finger as a guide.. your hand is stabilized and far from the blade.

We're building a fence on a large property and it sucks running back to the table saw for ripping at times. Forgot about this technique. Thanks! Too bad humans aren’t designed very well. If we had lizard DNA we could just grow back a finger or arm if it got cut off. When you think about it there are countless other species with better eyesight, speed, smell and so on. Maybe in another million years humans will develop the eyesight of a housefly.

As for where I’m from I wish it was mountains my wife and I love the Appalachian mountains but sadly no I’m from north west Florida where it’s stays just between habanero and hell on the temperature scale lol. How does one adapt this to a wider piece of lumber? I have some 2x10s that I need to rip 1/8" off. Clamp my level to the board and use that as a guide?

You would do it the same way you just wouldn’t have as much of your saw base on the board. So if your using a right hand saw the board would be on your right and you would pinch it at 1/8”. Hope this answer helps

I think a couple of those brass stair guages clamped on the base would work if the base were flat....

Hi. Can you make a video on how to cut a 3/4 inch wide piece of wood in half? I have pieces that are 7.5 inches long, 1.5 inches wide and 3/4 inches thick. I want to cut the 3/4 side in half for a project. Can’t figure out how to do it.

Using a pinch could cause a splinter or a cutting accident with your digits. Why not just clamp a small block of scrap at the 2 inch mark? That said, the idea of the video is pretty clever. As a noob woidworker, I always like these tips and tricks vids. Maybe I will sub and stay around a bit . Thanks!

True you could use a clamp but it’s supposed to be quick. I work in construction and that means time is money so lost time finding a clamp equals lost money to me but as a hobbyist woodworker you may have a little more time. Anyways thanks for watching

This method is not for everyone I’m comfortable running a circular saw after all these years of doing so. I also know when a circular saw binds it doesn’t jump forward it goes backward but like I said it’s not for everyone if your concerned about your fingers a good substitute is stair gauges you can do the same thing with them as you do with your fingers it just takes a little more time. If I wasn’t at work I would use a table saw it’s just in my line of work time is money and this saves me the time to go to the trailer find the gauges get back get them set up and hope they don’t move while I’m cutting I trust my hands more

I've never understood why they haven't made a vertical "clamp" guide on a circular saw that you can just clamp onto it at that 2" mark. Clamp it on, butt your saw up...and rip.

As a lefty I prefer a blade right sidewinder saw where the blade is closer to me. This would be difficult for me but I could get around it using my old skil worm drive saw.. One thing that sucks using a sidewinder as a lefty with blade right is all the sawdust spits out on the side im on.

Safer? Probably so but I work construction for a living and to me time is money some I would have to go to the tool trailer and then try to find the clamp because it’s not a common tool in my belt then come back set it up and make a cut. I could make the cut in the time it took to go to the trailer plus the title of the video is rip a board quickly I can’t think of a much quicker way

No doubt there is a better way but you are obliviously not a carpenter by trade you could take the board get out your table saw set it to the width you want a rip it but the name of this video is rip a board quickly. Not really…. Your going to get a parallel cut to the end of the board so if your trying to rip some two inches it will stay two inches the entire length of the board then you can straighten the board when you install it especially if it’s for a deck

why not use the circular saw guide to line it up at 2inches and save your fingers...

You can but the point is to keep your cut straight a lot of the people watching may not have enough strength in just one hand to hold the saw straight or may not use a saw daily. I keep getting comments about saving fingers, circular saws spin counter clockwise when looking at the blade therefore they don’t jump forwards when binding up they jump back away from your fingers.... personally I don’t worry about running a saw in this fashion but if I did have a concern it would be more for a leg than a finger just saying anyways thanks for watching

Not directly in front of the blade but yes. If you have a lot of experience with circular saws you know that when a the blade binds it jumps backwards not forwards
