I watched this before decorating my lounge, which has downlights, and really appreciate the excellent tips, including the one about keeping the paint scuttle out of the way (or in my case, a basic paint tray) as I nearly stepped on it when painting the hallway. Thanks for a great video, it gave me the confidence to paint a large ceiling area and it looks great, without any tram lines.

What direction do you normally paint the ceilings? I was taught to paint in the same direction as the main light source
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Always work away from the natural light e.g. start at the window and work into the room facing the window.
@boabyboy9786 жыл бұрын
Painting and Decorating do I paint in the direction away from the window or from left to right like you done in this video?
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Was just going to say the video shows it different because it was an L shaped lounge with two windows, a long room too long to roll that way so I had to do it another way. Sometimes you have to change your method.

If your doing 2 coats it doesnt really matter what direction you go in.i suggest first coat one direction then opposite for the second to reduce the chances of leaving roller lines in the finish

P & D Ive been using a wooster pro doo z 3/8 on ceilings... And also a Purdy 3/8 sleeve, trying to find a smoother Finnish for ceilings any others that you've tried that achieves better results Cheers Mark

pure bristle in water based though? does it not swell? also which brand of brushes do you use out of interest? enjoy your videos mate
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Thanks, Hamilton Perfection Pure Bristle, HAMILTON PERFORMANCE FLAT TIPPED PAINTBRUSH Natural & synthetic bristle blend on them. Before synthetic, there was only pure bristle and my dad would emulsion ceilings with a flat brush until rollers came around.

Great video, thanks. Just wondered why you use a medium pile on a smooth surface. I always thought short pile was for smooth and medium for slightly textured but not sure where I picked that up from.
@PaintingandDecorating4 жыл бұрын
Thank you, short pile are best for oil paints.... medium pile holds more paint allowing for better application.
@jameslowman20884 жыл бұрын
Appreciate the reply, thank you. I’ll try the medium pile next time.

Cud use hoover pipe over the holes vs pva

Better to dust and seal with PVA. . Using a vacuum it could suck out insulation and other things.

My downlights will not pull down, they come down about an inch but automatically spring back into position??... any ideas???
@PaintingandDecorating4 жыл бұрын
Yes, that is the spring pulling it back into position. You have to be careful and push the springs together and pull it out slowly making sure the springs don't flip around and hit your fingers.
@derekdarwin44694 жыл бұрын
Painting and Decorating Brilliant thanks, lights Just needed ‘pulling down’ with some force. You were right about the springs though, had to be careful otherwise could be extremely painful if fingers were caught!!!

18" roller is the way to go bud. I read that B&Q have had to compensate loads of customers who complained that the Valspar paint that you like smells like cats piss or rotting animals !
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
Not had any problems myself it's different than some emulsions as it's scrubbable there is an odour but not that bad and once dry no smell.
@orbitalforest6 жыл бұрын
Honestly mate there has been a real issue with it apparently , hundreds of cases of compensation , sounds like an ammonia issue . Never used Valspar myself so couldn't say if i thought it was bad or not. My dad loves the stuff , says it covers great. He is a one coat merchant though !
@PaintingandDecorating6 жыл бұрын
I do believe you, I've heard the same thing from others but it's one of the best emulsion paints that I've used it does not flash like matt vinyl and the fact it's scrubbable makes a big difference for my customers. And compared to some other brilliant whites it really is pure brilliant white. Time will tell I suppose, it's new on the market over here and BQ has changed the mixing desk from Dulux to Valspar so it's bound to course upset with paint manufactures.
