A cat named Orcabreeze was declawed An apprentice named Reedpaw or Rootpaw tripped and said Orcabreeze attacked her because they went on patrol and Orcabreeze came back with a stick in her jaws that was described as sharpened Root/Reedpaw was role-playing with me as kin so I believed her. I was also her mentor, but that didn't matter Anyways I told the leader Rainbracken, who hadn't received his nine lives at the time, about the incident and he exiled Orcabreeze After that I went on patrol and was murdered by the stick after Orcabreeze trapped my leg in a bear trap Then I decided to go to Root/Reed in a dream where she said she lied about being attacked, really she just tripped on a root

Fun fact: cats have special whiskers on their body that helps them sense everything around them, these whiskers can also calculate which way prey is going to run. Blind cats often live happily and just like a normal cat, they just don't feel comfortable to jump, seeing as they don't know where they're going to land

Jumping seems to be the only problem for hunting, maybe they’re extremely silent when hunting and stay in the bushes, slowly creeping forward, not even being noticed by their prey so there’s less of a gap when they do a jump.

The advice you've given in this video is absolutely amazing! But, here's a reminder! Blindness and deafness are spectrums. A cat could be blind or deaf in one eye/ear, or both ears/eyes, and not entirely! It doesn't always have to be 100% blind/deaf. Even entirely blind people have a sense of the light spectrum too. Your cat could have failing eyesight or hearing that fades to an entirety of blindness/deafness, or just permanently very bad eyesight/hearing. There's different types of blindness. Some have cataracts, some have diabetic or age-related blindness, some have un-corrected refractive errors. Others are born with deafness/blindness at birth. Whilst unlikely a COMPLETELY blind or deaf kitten will survive to become an apprentice, it doesn't mean an able-bodied kitten is 100% likely to survive either, blind and deaf kittens are MORE susceptible to disease and predatory animals. Even certain breeds of cats are more susceptible to ear and eye disease which can often result in permanent or temporary blindness/deafness! Results of disabilities like these not only can be age-induced, inherited at birth or from an injury but also disease. Example in Bengal cats: Also referred to as PRA, progressive retinal atrophy involves genetic disorders that cause the degeneration of a Bengal cat’s eyes. As time goes on, a Bengal cat with PRA may experience vision loss. Some cats even become blind due to the disease. Some cats start to display signs of PRA while still kittens, while others do not show signs until later in life. Unfortunately, progressive retinal atrophy is inherited, so it affects both males and females.

I just want to mention another thing to help with deaf cats! As we saw with Snowkit, his speech was very slurred compared to others, so you can use the adjective ‘stuttered’ or ‘slurred’ when speaking! I would also like to add that Snowkit is my favourite character (don’t judge)

5:48 Nuh uh! A cat born blind can still be a warrior, it will be a disadvantage in fighting but they can still hunt just as well. Even in real life, cats don’t rely much on their vision to hunt, so a blind cat in a fantasy series could certainly adapt. And besides, a blind cat could memorize the territory just as well as any normal warrior, Jayfeather proves this! Speaking of Jayfeather, the only reason he became a medicine cat was because starclan made him. He easily could have become a warrior, and so could any blind cat.

Cats don't rely on the vision that much? so their slit eyes aren't that important even though they judge the distance of the prey infront and since the slit eyes are vertical they have a smaller field of vision to keep focus on their prey.

Disability is a spectrum and all, so here’s a couple tips I’ve got for more generalised hearing loss taken right from a tumblr post that was really cohesive but I didn’t save the username of like a fool - as well as personal experience with hard of hearing ocs! (I’m not as experienced with other disablities but if y’all have any questions - about deaf cats or anything else - I’ll gladly prattle on to you about it. Might as well get into the spirit of disability pride month this July, yeah?) HEARING LOSS IMPORTANT - avoid them speaking with broken grammar, in third person, or with overly simplistic vocabulary like a caveman or toddler. If a deaf or hard of hearing cat can speak they will also be taught grammar - they will not suddenly forget how to speak if they lose their hearing - teaching deaf cats to speak verbally is a slow and dedicated process - if your oc is blind or deaf in one ear, they will lose/not have depth perception for that sense! So, unable to gauge how far a sound or sight is. - cats rely on hearing much more than they do eyesight. A cat would notice hearing loss as a problem long before even WE would. - blue eyed white cats are most genetically predisposed to being born deaf, but any cat can ! - hearing impaired cats are often loud. They need to be able to hear themselves, or they won’t notice the sounds they’re making. - cats have carpal whiskers on their paws. Less sensitive than facial whiskers, but still can assist your cat in picking up vibrations. - even if your clan doesn’t attempt an official sign language your cat can and will find some way to communicate, even if it’s just with family or friends ! - lipreading is extremely difficult. seriously it’s a nightmare. You need a clear view of the face, the cat needs to be clearly and slowly speaking, and it has to be a single speaker. It’s going to be useless for clan wide arguments or debates. And they’re not going to catch every word! - hearing loss is a spectrum. Your oc could only struggle with hearing quieter sounds, like hushed conversation or birdsong or the crunch of leaves, or they could only be able to hear extremely loud sounds like a gunshot. - RIVERCLAN - 2ND BEST you don’t need to hear fish to catch them. When leafbare comes it’ll be more difficult, though! Due to the swimming cats likely get a lot of ear infections and thus deaf cats would be more common in this clan :] - WINDCLAN - 1ST BEST The moorland has low lying vegetation. It’s not filled with crunchy leaves or water and there’s very little to make noise accidentally on. Most predators a deaf cat wouldn’t be able to spot in time despise open areas like moorlands. The only concern are twoleg dogs and for smaller cats, hawks, neither of which are particularly stealthy. - SHADOWCLAN - 3RD BEST With lush thick ferns and reeds (it IS a wetland) it can be quite annoying for a cat who can’t hear. Mud makes sound, too, so the damp environment doesn’t help much in the way of stealth. Predators will be lurking everywhere in swampy wetlands, and could easily sneak up on your cat. However, they hunt frogs, which generally aren’t hunted by sound! - THUNDERCLAN - 4TH BEST; or, DEAF CAT NIGHTMARE ZONE Forests are awful to hunt in if you can’t hear. Imagine walking in a field with invisible landmines that immediately broadcast your entire location to everything in the area. Yeah. Yeah. Rodent prey requires hearing to catch and a lot of cover means predators could and will be everywhere.

Ok uh I just got this in my recommendations, and while I don’t play wcue at all I do however am in the warriors fandom and I will note HOLY COW I didn’t think people actually took role playing as disabled characters in wcue super seriously. The fact everyone is trying to be as accurate and as positive with learning how a disabled cat’s usual life differs from the abled varies genuinely makes me feel happy. And just to note, as a hard of hearing by birth person myself, i’d just reccommend that your oc’s communication can vary greatly depending on the context of their deafness. For instance, a profoundly deaf cat wouldn’t likely be able to speak as well, like snowkit, but if the cat is just moderately deaf or mild, for instance, it’s more likely they’ll hear better, but will take more time to process as well as have a bit of difficulty speaking and communicating verbally, as they can misunderstand easily, yelling may be indecipherable to them, and may mistake words meanings or phrase their words a bit differently, and may not be able to notice how loudly they’re speaking as well! Anyways, just speaking from my view as I am no expert but as someone who indeed has hearing loss I wanted to say this! Great video, keep up the work 👍

Another tip for roleplaying as blind ocs: Cats in real life use their whiskers to navigate as well, especially those who are blind. (As an owner of a blind cat, they brush their whiskers against the wall and furniture to tell their surroundings). I use this in my blind oc Soaring’Cardinal so she can get around camp by herself. (She helps specifically in the nursery with caring for the kits.)

3:40 deaf people & animals can also still communicate with speech, but their tones often won't match the subject of their words & will be slurred and heavily mispronounced, most commonly known as a 'deaf accent'! I wanted to note this because I have a deaf oc & when I roleplay as her, most other people forget or ignore her lack of hearing, no matter how emphasized, simply because she can speak. also, deaf animals & people can feel vibrations, so they can feel something approach or even tell if a cat is speaking, just not able to hear their words. also, a general tip for disabled ocs, especially ones who are warriors: don't 'baby' the character too much, it enforces the stereotype that disabled people are helpless & can't function on their own, & ends up making your oc a gross caricature rather than something that reflects life. of course, your oc can have massive hurdles with certain activities, but at least have them try to be independent!

I have a warrior who was in a forest fire accident leaving almost his whole body burnt and one specific thing that I have always kept consistent is the fact that he does not allow other warriors to touch him due to burn wounds stinging if something or someone touching them he’s still able to do his warrior job just fine is just that he would have to visits the medicine den quiet a lot because of his burns (love the video I think it’s was very informative especially the blind one considering I have a lot of blind oc’s lol)

My oc Blinkpaw (idk don’t ask) he’s blind but I got the hang of using him and understanding his behaviors by using his sense of smell, hearing, and feeling. He also becomes friends with others that help him because he couldn’t get around whenever he had to go to training to become a warrior(once he became a med cat apprentice) and they had to teach him and help him around. It’s always fun to play as him because everyone is always trying to help him while some try to baby him. the med cats, kits, and others are fun to chat with and helpful to get him around and help him figure out where the heck he is, especially since he came from shadow clan but left it as a young kitty by his mother. In short I love Blinkpaw and people help him at times as well.

Love the video, good tips and tricks, but cats whiskers act as almost second eyes for them, so blind cats could get very good senses of the world around them even without being able to see. Another tip that might extremelly important: DO NOT name oc's after their disability- I know it's common sense but I've seen a lot of players do this before and its extremelly offendive. Unless it's part of their tragic story anf it's PORTRAYED as a BAD NAME, avoid using these. If you still think that's okay, think on how you'd feel if you were born- For example, blind, and your mom decided to name you "Blindness" sounds mean, right? I had a blind leader once, and I made him have his own struggles. Despite this, he never victimized himself for his blindness or constantly pointed it out in conversations- But what upset me is that one person said "What we have a blind leader???? He can't become leader, he's blind!" And that pissed me off so much. Like people, oc's don't have to be ALL about disability. Garrett from Quest from Camelot is a great example of a disabled character that has a lot more to him than his blindness. He struggles, but he is NOT helpless. ALSO, don't search for a "medical cure" for your oc's disability, that's also not okay. People with disability don't need to be "fixed", it's part of who they are. Of course, can't speak for all disabled people, but the "Disability cure" trope can be seen as a very offensive one, so yeah, beware. The Cinderheart situation used the troupe slightly, implying that Cinderpelt who have a new chance to live a "Happy life as a warrior" If she was reborn with a good leg, when she could be just as happy AND BECOME A WARRIOR IF SHE WANTED even with her bad leg. Anyways, don't follow Cinderheart's example. Disabled people can find happiness and do whatever they want like any people can, don't assume their lives are doomed because they are blind, deaf, etc etc. Sorry if I said anything wrong or offensive (call me out if I did, I want to educate myself better.) It's just because Warrior Cats books represent disabilities SO POORLY and most of wc fans replicate the same behavior. Thanks for the video!

Mute cat's are fairly similar to the deaf ones you can incorporate sign language, or use your paws in stuff to indicate actions! The only difference is you can hear!

I’ve rped as a lot of these cats. Had a blind cat (won a war with her, RIP Halfpelt), I have a cat with night blindness (Nighthawk can’t see in low ambiences), and an amputee (Catalina is my strictly kittypet OC bc she has a prosthetic leg). She’s strictly kittypet bc as a cat grows, if they have prosthetics, that would need to be readjusted and replaced as the cat gets bigger, which is not ideal for a wild cat.

A blind oc who manages to become a warrior would likely be with another cat whenever patrolling or going out, so the other can deal with fights and tell them about certain things like mice they can’t hear which are very quiet. It would be really fun if there was a deaf oc relying on sight and a blind oc relying on hearing working together.

I wanna add that in the warriors series cats communicate a LOT with their tails, especially on patrols. They also groom each others fur, twitch their ears, ect, which can make it easier for a deaf or mute oc role play ^^

I think that it is incredibly important to emphasize deaf warriors' capabilities. Deaf cats are very likely to be made warriors as they really have no real disadvantage and are perfectly capable of operating in clan life. If we consider these cats as anthropromorphic, they can likely lipread similar to deaf humans in real life. However, even with extensive speech pathology, most deaf people only understand a fraction of what they are trying to lipread. A better tip might be that your deaf oc is perfectly capable of communicating, but some things get lost in translation and your oc prefers to communicate via body language (cat sign language!!!) as most deaf people do. The Deaf community is incredibly interesting and open, and if you really want to be genuine with roleplaying as a deaf character, I highly reccomend checking out sources and researching it!

Btw if you are a blind medicine cat and you are at the tunnels before the Moonstone’s cave, you can say that you use your whiskers to know if you can continue walking or if the tunnel is getting narrower, cuz that’s why whiskers exist. Btw sorry for my grammar, I’m not English but I’m learning :)

I have an oc who I sometimes use whose half blind, she was born half blind. Though for the story I have for her states that she's a kitty-pet I have used her for clan roleplay. She has two names that I use. For kitty-pet RPs her name is Fantasy, this name holds a lot of history and I'll be happy to share the story if anyone asks, when I use her for clan RPs her name is Quill-suffix, almost all the time she's just an apprentice.

I once rped as a deaf cat and I literally was ignored but I had to become a medicine apprentice because they thought since I was deaf I wouldn’t be able to hear a rouge and die because of the fact I couldn’t hear but when I became med I was happy but still it was fun😅👍🏽

"You'll rarely be an warrior, if you even be an apprentice." This statement is false. Disabled cats can become warriors just fine. Have you ever seen a blind cat hunt? Have you ever seen a cat with two legs move around? Respectfully, I think you haven't done your research while you were doing this video, I don't think you said that _really odd_ comment with bad intent, but I do have to correct you on that. It does take time for a cat to get used to their disability, if they got it later on in life, but that does _not_ mean they can "rarely be a warrior, if even an apprentice". If the cat got their disability from birth, they'll learn how to live with that, since if you lose a sense the others are heightened. These are also cats who speak fluent english, built society and have magic ghost cats, of course they'll learn how to live with their disability. I recommend you add a disclaimer somewhere. Although I said that, i also said that they could possibly become a warrior or apprentice. I made that statement because it logically makes more sense. As well as most disabled OCs tend to be elders. I'm not saying all of them are it's just the majority. I know your oc can become a warrior by getting used to their disabilities, I was going off of my experience, the books (up to po3 Eclipse), and some research on the warriors series. ^^

@@zzomiez I'd like to note that the Warriors series is *not* a good source of representation, accuracy, or realism to how disabled people/cats function or are treated. I definitely wouldn't use it as a guideline for disabled roleplay research at all. The authors are infamous for being ableist when it comes to writing disabled characters. Here are a few examples: > Squirrelflight's Hope. When Squirrelflight is injured/presumed dead in a rockslide & temporarily goes to StarClan, Sandstorm tells her to stay in StarClan, as apparently being dead is far better than living disabled. I don't need to explain why this is horrible. When confronted about this, the authors told fans they would edit this line out of the book in future copies, but to my knowledge, that hasn't been done & was a straight up lie. > Briarlight's injury. - I don't remember which book it was in. When Briarpaw is injured by a falling tree & is stuck in the medicine den, Millie screams at Jayfeather for "prolonging her suffering" while he is treating her. Millie implies, like Sandstorm, that being disabled- in a fictional & humanoid society where the cats have access to working medicine & professional treatment- is worse than being dead. > Cinderpelt's injury. After having had her leg twisted, Cinderpaw is immediately forced into the medicine cat position, despite her protests. In real life, cats missing even multiple limbs are entirely capable of doing what four-limbed cats can do. Like I said before, they live in a humanoid society with access to humanoid medical treatment, so stripping away her warrior training is just- well, blatantly an example of ableism. There are a few more examples, like Longtail being forced to be an elder, Jayfeather being forced to be a medicine cat, etc, etc. but this reply is long enough already. :') I hope this helps, it isn't supposed to be a jab at you or the video. I do think that the video was well-made, though I agree that 1 or 2 lines could be phrased differently. Love the morphs. ^^

I remember copying these kinds of plots as a kid with my oc's and drawings and now I know that it was an awful behavior that should not be repeated. I'm lucky that I had better sources to educate myself and not let wc's influence cloud my judgement, but some people didn't.

@@zzomiezmost disabled characters in warriors tend to be elders because people’s senses normally get worse and they develop chronic conditions preventing them from working as they age. Most of the first arc elders with disabilities [including Oneeye, who become a warrior despite being vision impaired starting very young] were warriors at some point in their lives, they just got older and their senses started to become impaired

it’s not a warrior cats story, but i’ve got a cat oc called Carrie who has three legs! she hung around a barn in her younger years and got kicked by a horse, something that happened to my riding instructor’s cat a few years ago.

I have a blind OC that has the uncanny ability to sense vibrations in the ground (basically think of Toph from Avatar). The rest of my blind OCs do not have this ability however and rely more on scent and sound to get around. They will also use their whiskers to sense the direction of the wind. Some of them even use sticks (sort of like how people use walking canes) as a means to get better idea of the terrain around them.

I love playing as a mute cat. Instead of being completely unable to talk she speaks through sign language. So I don’t use quotation marks: “______”. I use dashes. -________-. And she can only communicate with cats that also know sign language

Hello! I know this video is a bit old but as someone who writes disabled characters often and am disabled myself, I would like to mention a few problems with this and just some tips unrelated to the video. First thing, with blind cats, "He turned his head towards the other cat" is an entirely fine sentence to use, as is the example you gave, but including voice doesn't really add much and shouldn't always be emphasized. On top of this, cats born blind likely would not turn their head to look at another cat because eye contact isn't really a priority. It depends on the cat really, but usually blind or visually impaired people may not look over at people and just speak in the direction they were already facing. Second, heightened senses for blind characters is alright as long as it's done in moderation, but if you make their senses so good that its all they're known for or so good they have no struggles, it becomes very stereotypically ableist. Third, "sound like they look beautiful" could come off as a bit odd, but for things like this "they seem beautiful" may be better, as even if the character cannot see their appearance they have their own sense of beauty to them in their own mind. Hopefully this helps a bit to anyone reading

I have one oc who is deaf, his littermate and him came over this because he slowly lost Hearing as a kitten and he learned to lip read! Although his words are stuttered and he mumbles, usually unsure of himself! I had another oc, who was blind after a battle, he’s an ex-Warrior now elder because he never learned how to deal with it but his mate is a kitty pet who he sometimes visits following the normal scent

Hello! WCUE player here! I need some help. How would you role play as a cat who struggles to speak? I find it difficult to say the words how it should be said if they have trouble. Also, how would you role play as an elder with dementia/memory issues? Can you help?

For a cat who has trouble speaking they would probably use a lot of paw movements to help guide what their saying. So even if amother cat doesn't fully understand they would still get their message across. As for an elder with dementia, sometimes they may get lost around the camp, as well as they would forget common things. Something I see in dementia as well is them thi king their in a different point of time for example them thinking they are a warrior and trying to go do warrior duties! ^^

One time I roleplayed as an oc of mine who was born into a clan but left after being attacked by a fox which left her with a permanently injured back and front leg,impaired hearing along with completely losing her sight in her left eye, plus trauma. After realizing she wasn't happy as a kittypet, her clan welcomed her back(idk why tbh) but I made it clear why I wasn't fit to have a serious role like deputy or leader and somehow I became Deputy and fought in a war and apparently I was 'the one that saved us'.. LIKE WHA?
