I think if you are a mixer you have done all of these things to a mix before. If your just starting the key is 4 things imo: • Reference tracks • Listening back in a space you know well that is near full range like a car • Having a friend listen and honestly critique your mixes • Practice, practice, practice!

Yes, I use all that advice. Another thing I would recommend is listening on tons of different speakers. It may sound good on one set and then terrible on another.

it is very true many tuts tells us to low cut everything bcuz assuming there is low end rumble. Another very common tip is use limiter on invidual tracks mainly bass tracks. Also heard that using eq on too many tracks create artifacts or something if mention opposite tip. At the moment I´m trying to watch mixing tuts made by somekind of pros and try to learn what is right and wrong. It is so hard to find right answers on youtube just watching people have lots of subscribers :D

I try to use limiters sparingly they color the sound and remove harmonics.

I don’t need to try to ruin a mix. Mine are already ruined. All of them. But I’ll give it a try to see if there is any more ruin left in them. lol And, thank you for your time and vids. I’ve honestly learned more from you in less than 1 year than I did in the past 15! I just wish I could catch on faster. Meanwhile, you and family be safe and well. --Claudia

I usually laugh at the title 'how to RUIN a mix'. I can make an EDM track. I'm very good at making music with 'Power Noise' genre and how to RUIN my mix! I choose punchy TRANCE KICK, create PRE-MASTER bus and 'drums' bus, separate from KICK bus. On the 'pre-master' bus, I can RUIN my mix by the following funny ways, such as, cutting ALL of the bass frequencies with parametric EQ, setting super odd compression ratio, applying multiple compression plugins, applying 15-second or LONGER reverb, applying multiple reverb plugins, overdriving (distorting), INVERTING one channel (left or right), and finally making sure the 'pre-master' bus peaks at -12 to -15 dB so that the KICK and drums OVERPOWER the entire mix! There are other ways to RUIN my EDM mix. If the song is at 128 BPM, I will set the project tempo to 512 BPM. Then I can CURSE the melody by duplicating the melody, panning one hard left, one hard right, pitch-shifting one of two melodies 1 semitone up or down! If I mix any house track like this, when summed to mono, all of important elements except the kick and drums will 'cancel each other out', and the entire track will sound FUNNY, WEIRD, CURSED and RUINED!

I can RUIN my EDM mix by just applying 'Frequency Shifter' on everything except drums with a certain, non-zero value of frequency! When applied, all the frequencies will shift linearly by the exact value of the frequency. Positive value will increase, negative value will decrease. This will RUIN all the bass, melodies and chords!

Super missed opportunity to teach in this one, by not continuing on to do the 'proper' mixing to these tracks, and conclude with a comparison. You basically just told me 'this is bad trust me' without proving it with a good version. Which actually would have been the teaching moment... kinda pointless video otherwise..
@kriskropd4 жыл бұрын
This is what I don't get. I think it sounds better because it's exaggerated. Your "ruined" mix sounds way better to me - but beauty in the eye of the beholder, or whatever; you-do-you. The genre used here also doesn't appeal to me, so I'm sure that plays a part of it and the difference in our expectations. I'm listening to this one more as a consumer with a pair of MAudio AV40 speakers and not as a mixer whose trying to please the broadest audience - and so I think your intentionally ruined mix made the song way more palatable for me while the source would've lost my attention immediately. The only exception being the far-left guitar - that annoys me in your ruined mix because the field sounds so unbalanced. And the reverb, which basically undoes all the exaggerated clarity you mixed in. Thanks for your other videos though where I assume you actually explain why you would call this a ruined mix. Here you kinda just improved everything (not optimally, but improvements nonetheless) then told me they were worse than source material. Very confusing conclusion. edit: Before anyone tells me it's my speakers, which - sure - whatever - here's what I heard this on cvp.com/pdf/av40_user_guide.pdf I'm pretty sure it's just a difference in personal tastes though. Heard the source and ruined mix again with Apple earbuds too with same conclusion; I just hate the source mix and prefer the "ruined" mix.
