I did this upgrade with ryobi I’m running 4ah hour battery’s I get allot of use out of it on regular mode but ones I hit the boost button will only last 10 min or so it’s all about battery

This is excellent info! My son has one of these vacs, which doesn't hold a charge. Instead of a new Dyson battery, this is a better option because he has 2 Ryobi batteries and can always have juice available.

I went a step further and got the ryobi adapter that takes dewalt and milwaukee batteries, which lets the vacumn use ryobi, dewalt and milwaukee batteries, works very well, and yes the v6 runs on high or low settings.

So I bought a ryobi adapter for my friend's Dyson V8 that she was done with. The adapter fits perfectly, the other advantage is they rotated the battery so opening the dump lid isn't blocked. The issue I'm having is running the Dyson at normal speed seems to be fine, but when you go to MAX, the slim Ryobi battery (24 Wh) seems to only work for a short spurt, then the LED flashes red (not sure what that means). I tried a higher capacity off brand Ryobi (90 Wh) it works in MAX but for a few minutes only. Both batteries are still fully charged. Any idea what might be wrong?

flashing red means adapter is not getting enough power from the battery. meaning something is wrong with your battery. Note: 18v rechargeable batteries are lesser voltage than the original vacuum battery. so it's not going to be the same power outage. It's a quick fix if you already have these rechargeable batteries. You can't run vacuum on Max power. It's efficient only on normal vacuum speed. It may not last as long as the original Dyson battery, but you can easily swap out for a recharged battery if you have more than one already charged up

Does anyone know how long the Ryobi 4ah batteries last with the vacuum? There were some people on Reddit saying that it overheats after a few minutes which doesn't make any sense since the factory battery operates at a higher voltage and the vacuum itself supposedly shuts down at 15v which means it would be safe for most 18v batteries that run the pack in 5s rather than the Dyson's 6s confirguation.

Does anyone have thoughts as to which batteries work best as alternatives? I have dewalt and ryobi products. The dewalt can’t get enough charge to run it even off regular power. I even bought a new battery to see if the problem was my old battery. Nope. The ryobi works really well, even on regular. As noted in other comments, it doesn’t work long on max. Is there anything better than ryobi?

On my v6 the Dyson can only hold the new Ryobi adapter by one screw of the two that hold the original battery.

Would love a direct comparison. Standard ryobi bats look yo be half the maH in size to the stock Dyson. In theory you’d need 2 batteries to get the same time. Hot swap and charge time are a win tho.

@@MavickMedia I have a 4mah lithium one from ryobi. I can clean my whole 2 bedroom apartment on high with leftover battery for a quick pass during the week. Vs barely enough to do my apartment on high with the standard dyson built in.

Dyson draw 22.2v but most power tool battery only have 18v so it will only works for 3 minutes max i believe

This may out work properly since Dyson needs 21.6v battery but Ryobi's battery is 18v. So it may not be a good idea for Ryobi but is good for other brands with 20v battery

20v batteries are the same voltage as 18 volts. Hilti is the only 22 volt tool I know of, but Kobalt and Flex are called 24v even though I’m pretty sure they’re both 21.6 actual voltage like hilti

Ryobi battery consists of five (5) 18650 batteries which are connected in series and provide 18v, but Dyson battery is 21.6v which consists of six (6) 18650 batteries and connected in series. So how can they have same voltage? By the way, each 18650 battery is 3.6v and that is why Dyson battery is 3.6v * 6 = 21.6v and Ryobi battery is 3.6v * 5 = 18v.

@@mated5543 The key to understand here is that the normal operation of the vacuum STARTS out at 21.6V but drops all the way to 15 or so volts by the time the vacuum stops and the original battery is considered "depleted". Essentially, the vacuum does NOT run at ONLY 21.6V. It runs BETWEEN 15-21.6V, and will happily vacuum on max as long as a voltage in this range is supplied. These adapters have their own cutoffs which appear to be around 16V, while the batteries start a bit over 18V at fresh. However, being higher capacity, they typically drop more slowly in voltage (as long as you use a tool battery over 2AH, preferably over 4AH). So essentially, it is as if your original vacuum battery started off half full, but dropped to empty much more slowly. That is the effect of running this adapter with a larger tool battery. Now have you noticed that with your original vacuum battery, when vacuuming on max from fully charged to depleted (in around 7 minutes), you DO NOT notice the vacuum power dropping? Even though the battery is going from 21.6V all the way down to 15V in that time? That's because the vacuum circuitry is designed to run at the same power level anywhere in that 15-21.6V range. And that's the key to why these adapters work! Because essentially even though the stock battery has higher voltage, it is smaller capacity and loses that voltage more quickly. And so it is hardly ever running at 21.6V anyway, and running a slower discharging 18V battery generally produces a functionally better result (as long as you use a bigger capacity one, like 4AH+)

any power tool adapter, if you find, will be weaker than the original battery replacement. if you want the vacuum to work as intended, just buy the original replacement battery

I never use the Dyson as it never lasted over 7 minutes. Now using my DeWalt 5A battery it is 3 X more running time, as if it had Viagra and last longer

These power tool batteries are 5S, so 18 V nominal (no matter what the marketing says) while the original Dyson is a 6S at 21.6 V. Back-of-the-napkin math says the vacuum cleaner with the power tool battery will deliver over 100 W less... It would be interesting to see a comparison of a brand new Dyson battery vs a brand new power tool battery. Like on actual suction power, not math.

I have the smaller Ryobi battery 24 Wh and this runs fine, but when I put it to Max it goes for 2 seconds and shuts off even at full charge. Do I need to upgrade the battery? EDIT. I just read a few Amazon reviews where they say max setting did not work for them but it's a common problem even with original battery. Has anyone been able to find a way to get Max to work?

I find you need a bigger battery then the 1.4ah battery, I use the 2.4ah but most of the vacuming is done on normal speed and if you use max sped it does reduce the battery life.

I’d make sure that the adapter is seated correctly. It could have a loose connection that still draws current. The more likely reason an airflow issue after changing removing and reinstalling the canister. Make sure the seal is tight and the purple Filter is also clean and in place. Even with the stock battery this issue is common and usually fixed by simply cleaning the purple filter and replacing. There’s some sort of air flow sensor that cuts power to avoid burning out the components. I’d assume inspired by hair driers as it’s the main reason they fail.

The Dyson battery is a 22 volt and the Ryobi is a 18 volt so it's pulling more voltage out of the 18v to equall the Dyson 22v. That's probably why the Dyson won't run long on the high speed.
