What do you use to heat the plastic, I have tried candles, boiling water, and hair dryers... none with any great succes. Would a heat gun work? Suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for the tip on the heat gun... just one question, what is a plastic welding nozzel and where might I find one? As for your question, the stuff I use seems to stick to anything, although it can be a bit fragile and will rub off if you handle it too much afterwards. It doesn't have specific derections for the materials you asked about, but in my oppinion I would say it probabely would work.

Just got back into modelling myself but have to admit that KZbin is a real boon! Watch some of the videos on hair spray techniques for weathering models and I think you'll be impressed. Have to admit that I've still to try it out myself. Will buy a cheap "classic" and give it a go. Older cars here in Scotland were rarely seen without rust!

I have a suggestion for you: After you apply your final rust colors for highlights, make sure to add some crushed chalk pigment usually used in pastel sticks for texture. Make sure it is really finely ground, sprinkle it on the wet paint, and then tap the body on the table to remove any excess and let dry. This extra texture also can create better subtle streaks for your rust to appear.

This was very helpful. I bought a 37coupe that im gonna make into junkyard condition. I also took a screw to the body to simulate bulletholes, I tapped the windshield with a carpet tac to also simulate a bullet hole, and i sanded the tires until they look dirty, and bald. Now trying to find a way to simulate Dents.

this video is one of the best for presenting the products and steps in an easy to follow sequence that leaves space for the modeller to explore and create. My only question was about the diorama. the truck is obviously rusted and abandoned, yet the engine and engine compartment look good. the hose on the radiator looks brand new [?]. please forgive me for being so picky. thanks for posting and best wishes!

This junkyard is breathtaking ! It's a beauty ! Why not pushing even further and add some of those tiny tree leaves all over the place, or some greenish "moss" on some of the "north facing" panels ... idk. Anyways, it's already perfect as is ! Congrats dude. Wish I would have your talent.

I used the water and salt technique. It turned out quite well for 3D effect rust perforations. I prime the body just like you do, then spray the rusted areas with velejo burnt umber. The rust spot areas have salt and a light coat of water put on them. Do not go nuts you do not need too much, let salt and water dry then spray on the colour top coat, the last coat sun bleached down by adding white on the flat surfaces to resemble sun bleaching. When the colour coat is dry rub the rusted areas with a toothbrush and water, only the paint over the salt breaks away. You can leave areas with salt under the paint to resemble bubbled paint areas. The chipped areas can be enhanced using a fine brush and some flat black, ochre and rust red. I use humbrol rust wash sometimes for rust streaks. I may give your method a try as e well the patina looks great.

I have the 'Rust-all* System' solutions but I haven't tied them yet. I still prefer to do my work in paints. My profile pic is one that I did using only paint. It's a 1/8th scale Monogram 32 Deuce Roadster that only comes at a hot rod. I had to remove the chrome from all the custom parts and find or make stock equivalent parts from scratch. There's a video on my channel where you can see more of it. I may get curious enough to try the Rust-all sometime. Nice work on the Chevy cab.

Really nice effect. 5/5 Yes, use a heat gun, but make up or buy a fine nozzle for it, to concentrate the heat to small areas. You could use a 'plastic welding' nozzle, or similar. Any idea if thie rust effect paints you are using will adhere to lexan or polycarbonate? Well done anyhow. Pete.

Another way this can be done, although with slightly less stunning results, is by brushing on watered down white glue, then sprinkling on baking soda. When the Glue is dryed, paint the soda a rust color. It gives a nice effect, as well as a nice texture.

Do they still make Rustall? I've had good (and perhaps less involved) results starting as you suggest with a motor tool, painting a mixture of rusty model acrylics over those areas and others, and washing the whole thing over and over with Rustall. I'd love to figure out how to make my own rust product, but experiments to date haven't met with success! If you happen to collect Scale Modeler mags, see Oct. '01, page 56.

the rust looks great but I noticed too many reflections off the surfaces like the hood and the windows on the cars. need to find a way to give it a weathered or dirty look. well, you don't need to, I just mean that's my opinion. I used to take a lighter to the windsheild (not too close or it'll blacken) to soften up a spot and gently push it inwards a bit and when it cools and hardens I would drag an xacto #11 blade around it and make sort of a spider web pattern like the window got smashed in.

simple and quite affordable way is to get a sealable pot/container, steel wool (at least the fine one - 0#) and vinegar (the cheapest will be okay). put the vinegar in the container and douse some of the steel wool in it (really, soak it!). the vinegar should cover the steel wool. let both in there for at least a week. seal the container, if you can't leave it outside, otherwise the smell will kill you ;) if you have to seal it, ensure you open it at least once a day, so fresh air can get in. hold your breath. otherwise, you know, smell - kill ;) stir it once a day, so air has the chance to reach the steel wool. after a week pour away the vinegar (or let it dry up as I do) and let the steel wool dry. best in a non-windy place because the steel wool will oxidize over the next few days and you will get a nice "rust-powder". apply on model with a brush (like dry brushing) - or apply some (clear) glue on the model and sprinkle the rust. a little time consuming, but in the end you have REAL rust which looks really great and is very affordable. good luck!
