Won't adding ethanol to the water kill the invertabrates. Could'nt you keep them alive in fresh water?

The point is to kill them and preserve them. Ethanol does both very well. This way the invertebrates can be properly examined, counted, and identified for surveying purposes. Yes it sucks they have to die, but the amount taken is so minuscule compared to what is left. Most invertebrates also don't live very long so removing these few does not affect the reproductive success of the local population.
