Nice Job I already have what we call a "stinky," so I can use it with just a little modification. That's a circulation hose like you have but it has a fan sprayer on the end of it that sprays back into the well. This causes the well water to be disturbed releasing the bad odor, the rotten egg smell. It really works great. Hope this is something you can add to your toolbox of knowledge.

Yup! You have a Sulfur dilution mistor . I've installed one before, but it made the pump cycle too much for my preference. They same can be done with a galvanized tank & a air injection nozzle. The Sulfur just needs somewhere to separate & gas off. But thanks for your comment! Those are not common devices, but do work excellent!

Great Job. I have an old well I found on my property, 92 ft deep 12' down to water. I want to install a pump but I have no idea how this well will perform. I'm sure this is one step that will be needed. Well is probably 62 years old, near a lake in alabama.

Set a 1/2hp at 80ft. I have a install video on my channel that will help guide you. They stopped at 92ft bc they got good water. That well should be fine as far as production. It may need to be ran for a day or so to flush the veins of the stagnant water.

I've watch several of your videos already. I had just helped replace my pressure tank yesterday and it was going great until I attempted to take a shower the next day. Checked the toggle switch in the crawl space, The pressure switch and then I hear and felt a faint humm... I followed the pipe to the front of the house hmm 2min...hmm. I knew replacing the 2 old 20gallon pressure tanks would open up the can of worms (replaced it with a 44gal and put it in the utility room). So I went inside and turned the breaker off, went to a friends to shower and am waiting till the morning to see if the pump is cooled down enough for it to turn on again (An old handyman/PC repair trick of mine). Thank you, Now I'll know what I have to do if the pump needs to be taken out or replaced. :)

I'm gathering knowledge for future drilling of a water well on our ranch and I have already learned a lot from your videos. A lot of similarities to oil & gas well drilling and completion including the submersible pumps but much smaller scale regarding well depths, tubing sizes, and pump sizes. Your method of using the well pump to circulate the well after treating it with pool shock is fantastic. I know these videos take time but what would have made this even more informative would have been a water analysis to show the mineralized water content and also samples of the water quality before and after treatment. Another potential common chemical to add to such a water well treatment would be either vinegar (acetic acid) or very dilute muriatic acid (hydrochloric acid). The amount of time allotted for those to remain inside the well would need to be carefully considered to help dissolve any scale within a well screen or pump intake. If you had the opportunity to remove a pump from the same area and removed some scale from that pump, keep samples of that scale to help with future well treatments. Vinegar is much less corrosive to the well pump and downhole clamps on top of the pump but also takes MUCH longer to dissolve scale as compared to even very diluted muriatic acid. Using a small amount of either rubbing alcohol or denatured alcohol along with a very small amount of liquid detergent can allow the acid to dissolve iron scale, calcium scale, etc. more efficiently. If you have access to a lower cost, non-foaming type of surfactant to use instead of the surfactant, that would be even better. The acid, alcohol, and liquid detergent would all need to be thoroughly mixed into a small tank or bucket before being added to the well. Mixing could be performed in a bucket with a paint mixer blade on a drill but that would likely create lots of foaming of using a liquid detergent. You could also use a small, battery-operated pump to circulate the mixture inside a bucket with less foaming. The compatibility of your well pipe with the treatment chemicals could easily be tested on a small sample of that pipe. With the acid, alcohol, and detergent treatment, the treatment should first soak and then be circulated as with your pool shock but most or all of the produced water should be circulated back down into the well. Again, having a scale sample from your well or nearby well would be very helpful to know the optimum time for the treatment to soak.

We actually use vinegar quite regularly for certain situations as well as food grade citric acid. The key is contact time and circulation. There's a product called Bore Clean that's very expensive but also does a great job. My videos are more to give people a idea or understanding so they can ask the right questions to their local driller or plumbing company. The hard part now is finding a decent company who's actually in business doing this type of work

You have earned another subscriber here. I found your channel doing a search for changing a submersible well pump. I then started looking around at what else you have and found this one.. I have a 10" well casing that goes down around 180 feet. The pump I pulled out years ago was a 2-HP many stage from 1988'. I pulled it in 2011'. Gotta love a Myers pump with a Franklin motor!! It was tested by a pro who set it up with a gauge into a full 55 gallon drum. With the valve wide open, it pegged the gauge and emptied the drum in seconds!!! My first thought was: That would be great for fighting a fire!!! Anyway, I ended up using a few above ground pumps because they were easily had and I could set them up with a bad back.. Well, now I am tired of replacing jet pumps and it is time to figure out everything I need and where to get it. Really the 10" x 4" well seal is the hardest thing to come by. Also Knowledge of hooking the pump to a controller that will take a signal from a sprinkler timer. (24 Volt). After watching your video I am going to use this BLACK poly pipe you used in the other video. I believe I can even deal with that!! lol. I have never known our well to get any lower than about 20 feet from the top of the casing, so I'm guessing 40 or 50 feet down would be fine for the pump to hang. I do know I need to shroud the pump in 4" casing or it will turn into the fiasco I had when I bought the house. It also didn't help that the 2 HP pump had a 1HP controller..... So, I am off to watch more of your videos.. Thanks for providing.. I hope you hit your goal soon!!

Happy to help! Just buy a 1Hp 2wire 20gpm pump & hang it at 120ft on 200psi poly pipe. Itll work fine & no need for a control box. With a little research, you can find a magnetic pull in box that will control your pumps on/off with the 24v.

Your in 3 months and praised him. So go recheck your water quality. Then call your well driller for filters and u v lights maybe need a softener. The smell is not the first sign of bacteria. You shitting your brains out is usually the first sign.

My current home has iron bacteria and very hard water. The house had a softener, a chlorine injection system, a 100 gal settling tank and a carbon filter to remove the chlorine. I'm pretty sure the chlorine toasted the softener beads. I replace the chlorine injection with 35% peroxide (and the softener beads and carbon). Although it is more expensive, it works much better and is much cleaner. I'm going to try the well shock this summer. Thanks for the great video.

The proper way to treat iron and sulfur is not with chlorine. You will shock the well for iron you are going to cause a mess. The only way to get rid of sulfur is through aeration. filtration for iron and aeration for sulfur.

@@JFEnterprize depending on how bad the iron level is you can actually clog up pipes when the iron is dislodged. I've had customers who chlorinated the well and they had to change the filters multiple times in a day because the iron was so bad. Chlorination is better used for treating coliform only. Chlorine on a regular basis will also build up on the inside of the well casing. It really just makes a mess if using it for iron. The best ways to treat iron is with dual filtration carbon and paper filter or an iron backwash system that backwashes every week and aerates everyday. Aeration will clean all of the iron off of the pipes inside the house so you don't have that build up in the toilets or toilet tanks.

Yes! You must put softener in bypass on the back of your unit for about 5 days. Chlorine can ruin the resin media in softeners.

Hi. I have iron in my well water. My dad use to put a gallon of bleach in the well about once a month..he passed in 2017. I have been doing that but seen in your comment thst bleach isnt stong enough. I have used Iron Out granules in the well but always have iron in water and its stained my sinks, my hair has a red tent to it now, white clothes are now orange. My toliet gets a black ring in it..not sure where that comes from. Do have a water softner. My ? Should i use Shock in my well? I have no slim or bad egg smell. What a great, very informative video! Looking for some advice on the subject as well (pun intended 😏). My house was built in 1980. I have owned it for 16 years and have never had an issue until about 8 months ago. I have no idea how deep my well is and it has a cast iron well casing. There is a fairly small 3gpm household filter installed shortly after the pressure tank. Truth be told, I didn't even realize that there was a filter for 8 years of owning my home, that's how good the water once was. It is now to the point where I have to change the filter almost every week due to a slimy, red substance; which I was informed is a bacterial iron buildup, as well as visible sediment in the filter housing. I had one gentleman suggest sanitizing my well using 1 gal of Clorox bleach, using fairly the same process you described in your video. I did that, after sanitizing, it did produce quite a dirty, reddish brown flushout. He did tell me I may need to repeat the process a few times. That being said, after some additional research, and advice of yet another nice gentleman (both of whom seemed quite knowledgeable on the subject), I was instructed not to use a pellet chlorine and/or Clorox as it could damage the cast iron well casing I have? He actually suggested peroxide?? My water pressure at this point is just not what it once was and having to bypass the filter at times, due to not having a replacement filter on hand, it has even damaged my appliances. Your thoughts and advice on my situation would be greatly appreciated as I am at a standstill as to what method would be most effective and/or reduce the possibility of creating even bigger issues. Also, could it possibly be a damaged well screen and/or pump issue? After all, it could be 43 years old for all I know, as I have no idea if it was ever replaced before buying my house. My apologies for the book. Please help 😣

I'd invest in a bigger filter first. (Big blue inline filter) on Amazon. 4"x20. Or a smaller one 2"x10" on my website. Secondly you should buy 2 bags of super pool shock-it & try to do what this Vid shows you & Follow the steps. Bleach isn't strong enough for the job you need it to do. Remember, it's 30+ years of buildup that your trying to clean in a couple of days. So try to clean the source of water first(the well) then filter it with a good filter. I recommend string woven elements 5 micron

Wow, ty so much for the quick response! I actually did just recently purchase a slightly bigger 10 x 4.5 filter that I have yet to install. Hoping it will produce at least 10gpm vs the current 3. My plan is to address the primary issue and sanitize the well prior to installing the new filter for obvious reasons. So, just to be sure, you don't see there being an issue in regards to the chlorine vs galvanized steel well casing? Also, I was previously advised not to let the chlorine sit for any longer than 12 hours as it could potentially cause too much debris/buildup to schlep off (due to decades of buildup) and possibly cause my well pump to clog? I just don't want to create bigger problems for myself.

@@stickolascage2936 We have really high iron and get the sulfur smell/iron bacteria Bacteria quickly if we don't run the water often. A local water remediation expert said that wells that have hard water and/or high iron should be shocked every year. We just did an acid treatment on our well casing and got a HUGE iron deposit and have been flushing out bright orange water for two weeks. Bacteria grew within one week of doing this - lesson learned stay on top of it!!

Great video. Quick question though, we put an electric anode on our 1 year old hot water heater. That took care of it. We did drain hot water and clean tank before. When changing from hot to cold i smell it for about 30-45 seconds. Pretty sure its the cold water, would this work for that u think?

Yes. After 8hrs you can slow down the flow to 50%. Circulate it then run it out on top of the ground for a while

Seriously? Ok what do you in next rainfall? Think about it……….. that’s right. What ever contaminates is previously is getting washed right back into well. Treat the water you drink and leave the well alone. This is dangerous simply due to the comfort you feel afterwards.

I have watched many of your videos and worked my way back to this one. Not sure if the comment will be seen but I have an above ground pump, so cannot do this, but can I pull the pump and just shock the well then run it all out? Pretty sure the sediment and microbial is because of the "empty nest," but ai have only shocked the well with bleach about five years ago (will be on a better schedule now!) because I was afraid of contaminating the surrounding wells with the chlorine... ir from the well being open at all🤭. Also, if we do a flush for the sediment, should we do that first, so ai son't have a ahock fountain all over or just go for it and stand back? 😅

IF there is a carbon filter, that is usually the same size as the water softener with the resin beads, it will filter out the chlorine, and there is no need to put the water softener in bypass mode.

Thank you for sharing your wisdom. We live in central Florida, in a 1964 Jim Walters home that only has a 2 inch well casing and our water is only about 10ft and not sure how deep the well is. We are on a canal to the river and we caint wash our cars, clothes, ECT.. Without them turning orange. I've been told by some its heavy iron, and others say it's tannins. I know our sinks, tanks to toilet, shower, ECT.. Turns orange/brown, and when I fill a glass, and leave it over night, it settles to the bottom. What can we do please to be able to wash our laundry and cars, without breaking the bank?

A water treatment system would be required. It's roughly $3800...so that would hurt the pocket, but would be a good investment if you ever decided to sell the property. You can try what I did in this video, follow the steps & do it a few times, then once a month. Thats the cheap route.

What would you suggest someone try if they have done this exact method over a dozen times? We have doubled and even TRIPLED the chlorine amount, as well as the circulation time. We have run the chlorinated water into all the lines of the house, let it sit for 72 hours, back flushed the water heater, flushed all the lines… you name it, we have tried it, to no avail! Even if we get it to run clear, the bacteria/color comes back in a matter of days once the chlorine is flushed from the system.

I'm buying a house and the well is the only downside. I have heard that they have had issues for years with "red mud" in their system and the water was undrinkable. When I went to the inspection it had a horrible smell coming from anywhere we used water. I'm not sure if it was just when we used the hot water but it was so bad that I had to leave the room. It didn't quite smell like rotten eggs but it was bad. The house hasn't been lived in for about 2 years so I know there has been a lot of settlement probably. Im trying to do research about this stuff and what you are doing is what everything says to do. I'm going to wash out the water heater and do this well sanitizing. But my question is, will this fix my "red mud" issue? There is a filter for the washer as well so they definitely had issues with the water. The well is at least as old at 1984 as there was a previous house on the property

Find out the well history ( who drilled it, well log, static water level, well gpm, pump setting, and pump size). Its hard to say what is causing it. The pump might be oversized, the well might not be cased, or it could be a high iron well. All possible causes can be fixed in some way but can be costly

Yes! You can do this process multiple times and it will get better each time.

@@h2omechanic Thank you for the response. My well is really bad with dark red iron and sludge. I am hoping this will take care of it. My pump was packed full, so I flushed it off with a hose. I want to replace the pump and pipe, but only after doing this process. A well guy came out to inspect it, and said this process will break down the buildup on the casing, and liquify it more to be able to be pumped out.

@@chuckspage3853 yes, this will help. But the proper way to scrub a well is by air lifting or "jetting" basically like pressure washing the side walls. Youd have to find a driller setup for jetting and its expensive . But successful. My videos on loop chlorination is a great DIY cleaning. If you pull your pump, a 6" chimney brush + weight & a long rope can help by brushing the walls. Just a thought.

I have an air injection system on my well and my test is coming back 0 for hydrogen sulfide. I still have a sulfur smell coming from the water though. My well is low yield and will run dry after about 120 gallons or 12 min wide open. Will loop chlorination kill wherever is making it smell? My second question is how long to run it after shocking? I can't run it for 2hrs without running it dry. Should I meter the flow so it can run longer? Should I bypass the air injection tank? Will there still be bacteria in the air injection tank or can I chlorinate that as well?

great video!!! so my question is while the water is recirculating back into the well for 24 hours im going to assume its not safe to use or drink any water correct? also how often do you recommend doing this? also is this the same as adding bleach to a well?

1 bag of shock is equal to 12 gallon of bleach. I prefer pool shock bc it cascaded down thru the entire well. If you use bleach, use 3 gallon per 100ft of well depth. Or 3oz of shock per 100ft. I wouldn't drink or bath the night you do this. But worse case it would dry out the skin a little. I'd recommend doing it every 1-2 years.

This sure is a much easier neater way to do this. I have a question: Every time I've shocked my well, the guidance makes a big deal about letting the chlorinated water run through your house fixture dn hose fixtures till you smell the chlorine. I've always wondered why you'd bother doing that, because if you shock the well as you show here, wouldn't the new fresh clean water wash out all the house plumbing anyway? I'd appreciate a response. Your right. The fixtures need minimal attention and they still see the cleaned water over time. The Chlorine needs to be 80%in well, and 10% in the pressure tank & water heater. Letting it sit in fixtures really doesn't do much.

@@h2omechanic WRONG. Sometimes you can fix everything but that stinky water still comes out of one of the faucets. Sometimes the faucet itself is causing the issue. I always treat the entire system if the water was really bad. I get inside the house and everything.

@@h2omechanic I leave the system off with that in there. It is flushed before I leave. Either you bleach everything and flush it or just the well and flush it. Maybe you have to wait days because of the pellets. When I let it sit overnight the pump is disabled to stop anyone from using it. Then I come back and clean everything out. Only then is it OK to use it again. FWIW, Rolling the dice ever telling a person the water is "safe to drink". Should refer them to a testing lab and tell them to follow their recommendations, not mine. I might drink it in front of them but I let them know it's not my place to say it is safe.

Just bought a small house with an existing well that evidently has a high concentration of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) in the water which stands to reason as it is in the community of Sulfur Springs Will get a water test shortly when I arrive to get actual PPM . There are about 40 empty bleach bottles strewn about. So my question is if I take my well pump, put it on a float valve to fill a large tank with maybe a pond aerator , fish tank bubbler or even spray the surface with water jets to agitate the water will this degas the H2S? I was thinking in this tank, installing another pump to a pressure tank and switch, along with probably some other type of filters depending on the water quality test results.The main question is how long will it take the H2S to dissipate by agitating the water. Of course not knowing the PPM is limiting, but wondering if this may work to clear the water even if I have to add a second external tank. Thanks for any advice

How do you shock a 2 pipe jet pump well system? My well seal didn't have the plug when I purchased house & was told it has to stay off because it's on artesian & has to be able relieve the pressure 🤷‍♂️. Water does come out of it sometimes, just depends on usage.

Thanks for the video. Question: if my pressure tank has a check valve before it, and I would be trying to hook a hose at the well head before the tank, how will the pump run for 12 hours to circulate the water if the water pressure switch is satisfied by the full tank pressure?

It won't. The check valve at the tank prevents it from back flow. I don't install them at the tank bc it gives the possibility of air into the lines if the pumps check valve fails or leaks slightly. All you need to do is run a hose from the house spigot.

The minerals are different in every well sounds like you have iron. No matter what your issue, id still recommend trying this & see what happens

Clorox is only 5% strong. Pool shock is 67% strength. You can use Clorox but it doesn't do what shock it will.

When you add chlorine to the well, use it like normal until you smell the bleach smell. Then run Hot only for about 15-20 minutes in a bath tub. That will put 40-50 gallons of treated water into the water heater.

Try to atleast treat the well with chlorine first, try this test in the Video. Then a day later pump off the well. After this you can send water off & get it tested. You don't want the test to be heavily contaminated by stagnant water. You want to test a fresher sample. Contact your local county health dept & ask them who you can send a drinking water supply test to & get your results.
