I checked out your video and saved a friend $3200 (05/2024). The dealer had quoted her $3300 and change. I'll thank you for her. Thanks. Took me like an hour. The hardest part was releasing and installing the clip. This Jetta compressor was located at the front of the engine and very easily acccessible after removing the plastic shield. I didn't even have to remove the belt or compressor. Of course I do have plenty of DIY mechanical experience but had never done this repair before. Even so ANYONE could have done it.

Just something from experience... If you have a genuine compressor, you should be able to match the solenoid part number. But if it's an after market compressor, don't assume the solenoid is the same as a genuine. You'll have to remove it, (take photographs of it) and match it visually. If you shop online there are dozens of these little buggers with slight variations. Anyway, that worked for me after getting the wrong solenoid.

I also did this exact repair a couple years ago on my 2013 SE. Got a cheap pair of snap ring pliers, bought refrigerant and then the solenoid which was around $25. Also rented the manifold gauges from the auto parts store. A local garage evacuated my AC system and didn't charge me bc I waited such a long time in their lobby (BONUS!) One of the hardest parts for me was using the pliers to get the solenoid out - it was stuck in there pretty good. I was also working without a lift - just using jack stands/floor jack so my work space was limited. The result was well worth it though - the system will freeze your a$$ off. I measured the temp at the vent after the repair and it was just below 33°
@jsnichols13 жыл бұрын
@@mikeohara5083 I put a link at the bottom to the 2012 capacities (should be same values as 2013). It states the system takes 525 grams +/- 25, which equates to about 18.5 oz. Each can of R134a has its weight/volume listed at the bottom, and there are 18 oz cans available which would get you within the right range (+/- .9 oz) without having do use multiple cans and have any guesswork or math. I rented the gauges at a local parts store (Autozone or Advance?). They'll charge your CC for the gauges and then credit you back when you return them, assuming they're in working order of course. @jsnichols12 жыл бұрын
@@russellwilson530 I don't recall having a lot of leakage, but I think over time they might use up a small amount of oil and it probably gets a little dirty too. According to the chart (link below) it takes a total of 3.7 oz, +/- .5 oz. It might just be best to try and drain the existing oil and refill it just to make sure the capacity is right? My compressor (Sanden PXE14) took PAG 46 oil, which you can get just about anywhere. I don't remember what I did in regard to the PAG oil part, but the end result of everything was amazing. I still to this day get Arctic air out of the vents, especially with the recirculate button pushed. @michaelh20343 жыл бұрын
1. There are several different solenoids available depending on which compressor you have. Pricing varies and stay away from the ebay/amazon specials. 2. Legally and being environmentally friendly you need to recover the R134A using an approved machine. Please don't vent R134A to the atmosphere. 3. The average life of one of these replacement control valves is 1-2 years. After that, you'll need a compressor anyway. This is from experience. 4. The average price to replace a compressor is 750.00 parts and labor. I guess a dealer could charge 1200 or more. 5. You need to either check the system or have it checked to verify the problem. It could be a number of issues. This is also from experience and applies to ANY vehicle.

Michael H have a question to ask you. On my Q7 TDI I replaced OEM compressor with Nissens unit and receiver drier and we tried to put gas in but it would not engage to take in the full charge and pressures stay static at around 100psi. Obviously the N280 valve is brand new. It also throws a code once in awhile displayed by Vag-com: 01320-Control module for climatronic(J255). Any idea in which direction I should be moving forward?
@michaelh20343 жыл бұрын
@@olegk455, it's most likely an electrical issue if it doesn't kick. Check ALL fuses before you get into a major wiring repair. However, did you evacuate the system for at least 30 minutes prior to attempting a charge? I am also not a big fan of Nissens compressors. If the fuse is blown and instantly blows again, unplug the compressor. If it no longer blows, the clutch is shorted. I have seen this before a few times with Nissens.

How do you check if the solenoid is getting power
@HelycopterEP3 жыл бұрын
You can disconnect the connector to the solenoid and put a voltmeter to it. When the “A/C” is switched on. The voltage will go from 0.0 to 5 to 10 Volts depending on the vehicle model. It varies but this move from 0 to the required voltage will be gradual. As In you’ll see the voltage rise slowly. That’s to aid in fuel economy and reduce the sudden load added to the engine, typically seen in clutch type compressors. So the way you’d check for this is if you’re getting voltage but your pressures are not changing, then you know it’s a bad solenoid.

What do you recommend for a hissing sound upon acceleration? The ac is cold. It makes a hissing sound every time ac is on and accelerate

You have a turbo engine. That’s what that sound is. Completely normal. Nothing to worry about.

Hey guys I just replaced my solenoid.. A/C is ice cold and works perfect again! My fans would come on after awhile or when driving.. but they weren’t working in conjunction with the a/c being turned off/on. Now after replacing the solenoid the fans act normal and turn on/off when they should and in conjunction with the a/c. I thought I had a fan control module issue but sure enough the solenoid fixed it!

James Lucy the answer is no, they will not function when commanded when the a/c is turned on if your solenoid is bad. They will still come on to cool the engine though. After I replaced the solenoid and recharged the system the fans now function properly when the A/C commands them on

Do you need a special tool to drain the refrigerant?

You need some way to evacuate the refrigerant into a specific container. The machine he is using does all this.

Does this require you to add oil back in when you recharge the compressor? If so, would you put back the total amount it says on the compression witch for ours its 110 cc Thanks

look at the chart (link) at the bottom of the response from Jeremy Nichols responding to Russel wilson in the first set of responses at the top of page inside the Javiar I VA from 10 months ago- yea i had to go look to make sure i was telling you right haha . Sounds like You can purchase the A/C freon WITH the oil already in it. We have what i think sound like the same symptoms 9kinda blows cold but like swamp cooler cold and when hot days hit- it dont do squat) So Im going to try this method on our '13 Jetta before i go spend $1200 from an outside source. Sounds like the hardest part is jacking up car to access the part. Ill check back in here in a week or so after i get part and arrange rental.

When the A/C is on full blast, aren’t both of the cooling fans supposed to be on? I noticed the left one isn’t on in my 2013 Passat sel. A/C seems to blow fine when I’m driving. But stops blowing cold air if I’m stopped.
@pamelapainter31952 жыл бұрын
If it is anything like my Jetta, there is an air filter under the passenger side dash. When I first start my car, the circulation always comes on with the little car thing, which means it is circulating within side the car. I personally think this is backwards from what it should do, but you could try turning that off so air comes from outside just to see if that makes a difference. If it does then it probably is definitely that filter under that dash. It is a little troublesome to get to, but something you can do yourself probably. I did and I’m a 60. There is a couple videos on here about it. Just speculation of course. Passat and Jetta’s seem to be very similar.

Went to recharge my AC the other day and the needles from LOW and HIGH side started going up and down… would that be because of a bad compressor or it might be the same issue with the valve? Or the valve can be only if the pressure is static?
