Excellent advise. I haven't grown miltoniopsis orchids, but I have read that this is one of the best ways to do it. It provides constant moisture, and less risk of rot than sphagnum, because it has perfect aeration.

Anna Maria, I have to thank you for your vide on saving miltoniopsis. I followed your directions faithfully with a Herr Alexander. The roots were full and I repotted in Lica and used distilled water, as you suggested. Then after reviewing your video again, I suspected that all the roots were rotted. I checked again, and yes, I had to trim almost all the roots off as they were dead. I repotted again in the Lica beads with distilled water, not expecting it to live. A month later, I checked, and I see baby white roots. I have new growth on two pseudo bulbs, and so far no algae or fungus. The new growth have pleated leaves, but, good grief, I'm not too worried as I was sure to lose this baby! I have not fertilized, as not sure how and what to use with distilled water, and am hoping you can help me out here.... Can I use the MSU fertilizer, which is what I have? What ph and nitrogen levels? Thank you, thank you, I love milts and was sure I would never be able to hang on to one.....

I am very glad you followed my advices and your miltoniopsis is doing great! Though I have a last suggestion for you...try not to move it too much to check the state of the new roots. In this process you might dammage them and we don't want the growing root tips to get dammaged. And indeed, usually old roots don't survive in s h, because they are just not used to it. The old roots were adapted to that old medium, but I belive they were on their way out anyway :) Happy growing!

Brilliant - and all of these tips apply to other orchids especially the oncidium alliance types that are frequently for sale in stores and DIY places sold as Cambria or Colmanara eg Nelly Isler, Stirbic, Catatante etc. These will be sold in that same coconut based media - yuck! I've just repotted my 3 miltoniopsis - even though they are in bloom/spike (along with many others). Saving the plant is more important - blooms will come again when the plant will be much stronger and not exhaust itself. It's just a shame that such wonderful orchids are treated so badly by the traders. My zygo is in that stuff and is next on the list.
@MiracleOrchids18 жыл бұрын
+Roger Frampton Yes that is true... but I will do someday a video about that. If a milt has a good root system and you decide to leave the spike, it will last. I did that also. That red milt that I just got is still with it's spike there, because its smelling amaizing. But I need to cut that and the one that the new shoot is producing :( My zygo is in semi hydro and is going very good in term of roots. I will make sure to show it trouly when I will do my next orchid collection tour. Thanks for watching!

Thank you for this very informative video on saving Miltoniopsis. I only have one at present and it's a rescue that only had one tiny leaf and two roots (short roots) so far it's produced two little pseudobulbs, is very leafy and is about 5 inches tall. I will replace the media very soon and will give the media you used a try. I hope you continue to post videos on Miltoniopsis.

This is EXACTLY the tutorial I need for my three Mtoniopsis orchids. I needed the advice to spray plants with hydrogen peroxide. Really, all of the steps you presented will be incredibly useful to me. You video is clear and visually easy for me to follow and view. You did an excellent job!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS LESSON. I'm in love with these orchids and am looking for a good source that sells miltoniopsis. Right now I'm looking for a yellow one, so if you know a good place for me to go to order one, I'd be very grateful for the info. thx

Sharon Hamilton that depends where are you from. In USA I know you can find them in garden centres and supermarkets, or on online shops. Here in Europe I never saw one yellow :(

Yeah .... when I have filmed this video I really didn't noticed that she was asking me for food lol 😅 Got a good laugh when I was editing this video. I'm glad you like them, I also love miltoniopsis, I think they are between the easiest orchids to bloom and very fragrant, once you got them established in their pots 😊

@MiracleOrchids17 жыл бұрын
+Intis Ioana Da, este pefect si cu granule de argila. Este chiar mi bine. Rezervorul trebuie sa fie de cam 4 cm. :)

Miracle Orchids Multumesc de raspuns! Neaparat trebuie sa il transplantez! Chiar azi am vazut ca el era foarte harnic si facuse 2 pui de 3 cm! Pupi

I adore milts and have killed more than I care to admit to, never knowing why... (I even divided and grew one from babyhood only to have it go into root-rot mode.) I have one now which I am going to convert to s/h (and pray....). It is not looking good as and now I know, thanks to your video that it's getting too much sun and that the medium (spaghnum moss and fir bark, just repotted!) is not healthy. Do you or anyone else have more information on semi-hydroponics? I note that Dani/Miss Orchid Girl had converted most of her orchids to this medium over time. T Thank you both for your dedication to us orchid lovers who don't have the time to join clubs!

I'm glad you are going to try s h for your milt. It should recover very well if it has the energy to do that. For me, they recover almost all the time, because I always cut the spike and let the plant establish. That is because here in Romania, I never saw a healthy milt in stores. Good luck with your rescue! I will do another video about milts soon, and I'll talk there more about what I've found out about this medium in the last few months. Thank u for watching!

s/h it's well known good for healthy plants and not for plants with bad root system
@MiracleOrchids18 жыл бұрын
I find it to work better for plants that need rescue in terms of root loss. Think it logically. if you have an orchid that doesn't have any roots but has enough energy to recover, all the new roots will be adapted to that new medium. But if you have a plant that has a good root system, in my experience, those roots will die anyway, because they are not adapted to this level of moisture and aeration. Not all orchids do that, but as I transfered over 150 orchids in it, I can tell is not a rule that a specific genus will do that. Each individual reacted in its own way. Bottom line, if you have an orchid that has enough energy, it will recover faster in this setup, since any cm of the roots will absorb moisture😊
@yuntinglin67038 жыл бұрын
If u go to search on internet like firsttrays.com you will know that plants in full growth have much more chances to develop new roots for the s/h enviroment,you van still rescue orchids with most of theyr root damaged but it will take much more time and the chances are much lower... it's up to the grower, if you have space and time to do that just do it but i am not that kind of person who could wait years before a plant recovers.
@MiracleOrchids18 жыл бұрын
+Yunting Lin What I say is from my personal experience. And yes, I did read all on that website. But my orchids are not recovering in years lol. If yours are doing that, then you are doing something tremendously wrong there. My orchids recover from no roots , to healthy and established plants in a matter of less than 8 months. And pretty good for my standards. And of course each grower does what he thinks is best for his orchids. If you think you can save better orchids in bark, go ahead and do that. For me s h ,or ,for that matter, using inorganic medium just as that, medium, works best.
@yuntinglin67038 жыл бұрын
I use s/h for all my plants too. To me even 8 months are an eternity :)
@MiracleOrchids18 жыл бұрын
+Yunting Lin 8 months in orchid time is normal dear 😊 What do you expect? orchids don't grow like weed. 6 to 8' months is the normal time an orchid needs to recover. So you grow any miltoniopsis? because this video is about them in particular ;) this orchids love and thrive in s h

Love this video! Waiting for an update for this beautiful orchid! (Half a year has passed already, so... could you make a video on that? :3 ) I also bought a milt in a german store and it was just SAD. It still is sad, losing bottom leaves, pseudobulbs are thin and wrinkly. I repotted it in bark+seramis after 1 week, and after 1,5 weeks it's still sad and nothing changed. Waiting faithfully for it to recover :( Do you know how long it can take to grow a new shoot?
@MiracleOrchids18 жыл бұрын
Lela Dol well, it all depends on it, if it has energy to grow a new shoot or not. I don't know how bark and seramis works for milts, but as long as you added enough seramis it should be fine 😊 Miltoniopsis take about 6 to 8 months to grow a new shoot and mature it. New roots are produced when the new shoot is about 10 cm in hight. I will do an update as soon as posible. Thank you for watching!
@lenahygiena8 жыл бұрын
Thank you Ana Maria! :) By the way... Is a new shoot strong enough to push through a leaf? My orchid is currently staked, which means a string put on the base over the outer leaves. Makes me kinda worried but without that the orchid is very wobbly :( And I wouldn´t let it fall out and be stressed from repotting once again.
@MiracleOrchids18 жыл бұрын
Lela Dol yes, it should be strong enough 😊
@lenahygiena8 жыл бұрын
So this Miltoniopsis I talked about started to loose leaves again, nearly all of them, and its single backbulb is all shriveled up and yellowing. It is not mushy though. Does this mean it tries to redirect its energy into a new growth? Also, is it possible for the "eyes" of a pseudobulb to be damaged in some way so it wouldn´t be able to produce new growth?
