It's a pity such a beautiful healthy looking cactus has started rotting! The good thing is that when you cut the rotted base there is a big other part which could be saved! Hope you will succeed in regrowing from the remaining part! Sending you Lyn and Hans lots of love and wish you have a lovely evening!

I’ve lost a couple of my cacti over the last few months, due to rot, two of which rotted for no reason. I unfortunately had to compost all the rotted ones, because they were small, I just didn’t have enough to save, and I made the mistake of not letting my cuttings callus over. These videos have been invaluable, even with my beginner mistakes 😅

Hi! I followed your advice to save a 20-year-old cactus. Three weeks ago, I cut, sprinkled with cinnamon, wrapped in plastic (to hold), and placed the cactus in a cool, dry location indoors that gets indirect light. So far, so good. I see a bit of callousing but do not see any evidence of roots yet. I watched another of your instructional videos that illustrates wrapping the cactus in paper and placing in a glass. I am wondering if you have "next step" video for the one above that shows how that particular cactus evolved (your storage, callousing, rooting, and planting). I don't want to mess this up, and I have never taken care of a cactus before. Your videos are FaBulous!
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Жыл бұрын
Hi Amy :-D thats fantastic you have saved your 20 year old cactus, and brilliant that your cactus is callusing over, the roots can take many months before they will develop, and usually roots will start to grow from the callused end anything from 3 -12 months, unfortunately I don't have a video of the follow up on this cactus, but the roots started to grow after about 9 months of having this cutting air drying and rooting, and once the roots developed I potted up the cactus and it bloomed this year, The god news is its normal for the first few weeks for the cactus to focus on forming a hard callus at the bottom and then roots will develop in time but it can take a god few months and patience is the key, so happy you love my videos and thanks so much Amy for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX

@@desertplantsofavalonI am so happy to hear back from you and to receive your encouragement! I don't know what I'm doing, so I really do appreciate your guidance. There is a point forming in the center of the base (which I thought was a root, but since I watched a few more of your video, I realize that it is not a root). Also, there is a bit of what looks like mold forming on one side. Is there a way that I could show you photos? I just want to make sure that I am saving this cactus and not causing harm. My husband and I inherited it from a relative we lost about 15 years ago, so this rescue mission is an important one to me. Again, thank you so much for your great advice and super positive vibes!

I would love it if I could send you a photo to help me figure out what the species is & to make sure I definitely need to do this before I take a knife to him & butcher my original plant who I love so much & has real sentimental value xxx

How do you care for cactus that flower and the leaves turn brown at the bottom
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon Жыл бұрын
Hi Phyllis, it can depend on the type of cactus, but if it has leaves it may be an epiphytic cactus like a Christmas or other type of Holiday cactus, it can be normal for the lower leaves to go brown at the bottom and as long as the cactus is not rotting or has any signs of insect pests then you can prune off the dead leaves at the bottom, thanks so much for watching and happy growing XXXX

I managed to save all the little pups but the main stems were full of rot. I did exactly what you did and applied cinnamon and left it to dry for about a month. Hi Jo Anna, so sorry to hear about your cactus, unfortunately it sounds like it is too late to be able to do anything now because if it is dripping and floppy the cold would have damaged it completely, its gutting when we lose plants and the very cold weather this Winter has damaged and killed a lot of growers plants, thanks so much for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday today XXXX

Hi Jason :-D I am not sure about spray bleach as I have not used it personally, I think the best way is to completely remove any signs of visible rot first before using any type of bleach, the bleach may be too strong for the plant tissues, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

Just discovered the first rot on a cactus of mine :(( I inspected the roots and they were healthy looking but from the stem up and it was pretty mushy and brown in some places. Don’t think it’s due to overwatering. Maybe it already had this when I got it but I didn’t see it due to the crests of the plant hiding it? And I only notice it now because it was spreading idk :( I do remember tearing off some dried up parts from the plant when I got it on the underside of the plant. Really sucks was the second largest cactus I owned and I really loved how the crests made it look like a brain. It was some kind of echinopsis if I remember correctly, only created. Hope I’ll be able to propagate from the cuttings I took, not sure, first time doing this. Really sad though :(((

We took cuttings from a 7' tall 40 yr old cactus and I let them sit to callous and the bottom of the cuttings are turning black! I read that this is a fungal infection. The mom plant is fine and still huge. Don't think the cuttings can really be saved.
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 2 жыл бұрын
Oh no with the cuttings turning black, this definitely sounds like a fungal problem and your cuttings may not be saveable, you could try cutting back the cuttings again but the fungus may be inside of the cactus tissues, thanks so much Sandy for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a terrific Tuesday XXXX

Hi Everyone,(BEGINNER QUESTIONS) Something similar happened to my cactus and I have no idea who to ask on this but when I cut it open there were little white bits of pus coming out and I’m unsure why? Also I put plenty of sulphur powder on the cactus wound but I’m unsure how I will know roots are growing and when to replant the cactus with new soil? I’m so sorry but I’m really new to propagating a cactus so I’m really unsure what to do? I would greatly appreciate any and all advice. Thank you xo
@desertplantsofavalon
@desertplantsofavalon 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Sophie, so sorry to hear about your cactus, I think that the white pus could be one of two things, the first could be a fungus from the rot, but the other could possibly be caused from Mealy Bugs, often both foliage and root mealy bugs will burrow into the plant and lay their white nests and hide in any places they can get into on cactus, this can cause the cactus to weaken and rot, thats great news you have used the sulphur powder, you need to leave the cactus cutting unpotted until it has formed a very hard white crust at the cut of the cutting, it can take many weeks or months depending on the diameter of the cactus cutting, once the cutting has fully callused and formed the white dry crust at the base of the cutting you can plant up in a dry gritty cactus soil, if its your Fall? Autumn now its best to keep the soil dry until the following Spring, the cutting will still send out rots even if the soil is dry, Good luck with your cactus and sending you lots of love and plant power for a wonderful Sunday XXXX
