I plan to retire or reduce my work hours in five years, and I'm interested in how others allocate their income between savings, spending, and investments. I currently earn about $175K annually but haven't built up much in savings so far.

For many years, bonds or other fixed-income assets could produce the yield needed to provide solid income for retirement needs, Recently my $2m holdings have been fluctuating 8% up and 20% down. I want to know; Hold on or sell off my positions and hold cash ahead of retirement?

Suzy Orman is right when she says that "don't do any investments that you don't understand". She's also right when she says to get rid of all your debts before retirement. I early retired before the age of 65 and doing well financially by doing just what she said.

Suzie has received so many negative comments - all of which have been against her personally - they say she a scam artist since she has no credentials and has lied about whatever degree she may or may not have - but this is so typical of people today - the question of likability factor versus results. Yes, many who have worked with her say nasty things - but this is the personality. All she has done over the years just like Dave Ramsey Radio Show - is research finance, put together a package, easy to understand for the average person - all the information is out there, all written by the financial geniuses/experts but all Suzy has done is to package it and sell to the little guy. The results: meaning the educational, "how to" materials that she has packaged is all sound financial advice. She has helped thousands - perhaps so much negativity is from those who are the experts and have multiple degrees, and work for some financial institution making pittance compared to Suzy - she is a brilliant marketeer and perhaps even opportunistic - so what? we all are - but in the end she has helped thousands by a simple repackaging of what financial experts advise. This an example of personal history : taught protocol/etiquette for years, but attended a so called school in Washington DC - actually a seminar in hotel - and received "certification" - though no affiliation from any educational institution - in the end, all I learned found in Emily Post - just they packaged the material and promoted in a more modern, less grandma approach which I loved. Same as Suzy - terrific public relations/marketeer. That is what America is all about.

$200 a month 40 yrs ago would be like $600 now so when she says if you had done that starting in 1981 it's not as easy as it sounds. Also the max ira contribution amount in 1981 was $2000 which match the $6000 limit we have in 2021 when considering inflation. $1.4m won't sound all that great 40yrs from now. If you want a number that sounds that pretty 40yrs from now you should be maxing out your contributions and probably a little extra.

If the key to retirement is not to own a home then why is it important to have the house paid off? Also Roth are not better. I'm at a much higher tax bracket now than I'll be at retirement. I also plan on retiring in state with no state income tax. Deferred taxes is like uncle Sam giving you a loan at zero percent interest for you to invest in until you retire.

Suze has it wrong: Roth is not better. Deferring taxes is better. Your tax bracket is lower on retirement. Further, advising people to prepay their mortgage robs people of their liquidity and forcing them into a fee heavy and expensive reverse mortgage. Better to invest the money, preserve liquidity, and pay the mortgage as schedule.

This is precisely why I like having a portfolio coach guide my day-to-day market decisions: with their extensive knowledge of going long and short at the same time, using risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying it off as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, their skillset makes it nearly impossible for them to underperform. I've been utilizing a portfolio coach for more than two years, and I've made over $800,000.

It's recommended to save at least 15% of your income in a 401k. You can use online calculators to estimate how much you should save based on your age and income. Saving at least 15% of your income in a 401(k) can help ensure that you have enough money to retire comfortably. By saving this much, you can take advantage of compound interest and potentially grow your retirement savings over time. I retired with about $650k in my 401k.

That is why you should buy a home by early 30s and pay it off before you retire. It is your largest expense and you get that out of the way. You no idea how much rent will be 30 years from now. We paid it off way before we retired and we can put that extra money to boosting our retirement accounts, college, fixing up the home and any other thing we want

Time is the main ingredient when it comes to wealth building. A famous parable emphasizes the importance of investing early. The story is about two friends, Ben and Arthur, who are both 19 years old. At age 19, Ben decides to start investing $2,000 per year for the next eight years - from age 19 to 26. At age 26 Ben stops investing but never touches the investment and allows it to grow. Ben invests a total of $16,000. When Arthur turns 26, he decides to start investing $2,000 per year for the next 39 years until he reaches age 65, for a total of $78,000 invested. When they turn 65 years old, Ben - who only invested $16,000 - has an investment balance of $2,288,996. Arthur invested $78,000 and has a balance of $1,532,166. As you can see, Ben saved $62,000 less than Arthur but still came out $700,000 ahead of his friend.”.

There's a lot of negative comments about her... I read "The Money Book for the Young, Fabulous, and Broke" by Suze Orman years ago when I actually was young, fabulous and broke. That book was the very beginning of my road to financial literacy and I'm very thankful for her. I don't know the full story about her being a con, but that doesn't mean her advice won't help you.

It also had monthly service charges for just having the card. It doesn't surprise me she started her career by lying she was an investment banker for Goldman Sachs LOL. Even when she was a waitress, she was known to lie to people.

Number one, you don't need a million dollars. Number two, it matters more how much you owe than it does how much you have. Set your goal to be debt free by the time you retire. I retired debt free in 2016 and haven't touched of dime of the retirement savings. The only way you can know for sure how much money you will need to save is to know the date of your death. Otherwise you are just guessing. Look at family history to get an idea and then do the math. The earlier you start saving the better. Set your budget at 90 percent of your take home pay. Put the 10 percent into savings and leave it there. Along the way you may need to dip into that account for emergencies. That's OK, but consider it a loan and pay yourself back. Your future self with thank you. It's not complicated math, it's grade school math. Being prepared for retirement is the single best gift you will ever give yourself.

My parents followed Suze's advice years ago when they were about to be 70 years old. She recommend real estate rich folks with little cash on hand get long-term care insurance to protect their real estate investments and income. Consequently, my father used it throughout his retirement for paying caregivers so he could remain at home. $260K came from this long-term care insurance plan. Smart decision for him.

@jenniferj2456
@jenniferj2456 4 жыл бұрын
Wow suze. Just how much disadvantage do you think youngsters can take? Endless amounts? Should the entire weight of a bad economy be broke on the backs of the young? First, we can't afford homes because the living wage isn't high enough so we throw money out the window in rent cuz we have to! Many of us have student debt and parents from your generation who never saved a dime for us for education or anything g for that matter. Employers rare!y offer pensions and the best retirement plan we have is a 401k that likely won't grow much. Social security has already told us to expect only 80% of the benefit that your lazy generation is enjoying. People now have to buy their own health benefits, or else, maybe. And now you want to propose that young people's retirement age be raised for 67 to 70? You are extremely unfair to young people. Extremely. Today's youth have to already work harder and longer than any generation this country has seen ever. USA is turning into a third world country for most of us in more ways than one. If your honest suze, shouldn't your best advice to people be to MOVE to Canada or Australia? Iceland?
