I didn't know dry rot was a thing until earlier this year. When I was repotting my succulents, I noticed most of the roots were in the potting mix and not attached to the plant. I was so confused because the succulents themselves look fine. I realized it was from underwatering. I watched videos where they say feel the leaves and if they are firm then don't water them. I had read you only need to water them once in winter. I hear a lot about overwatering your plants will lead to root rot, but not so much about get dry rot from underwatering. I'm fairly new to hoyas and now I'm having issues with dry rot. This video was very helpful. Thank you!

When it comes to Hoya I don't get nervous about overwatering them, I get nervous about underwatering them. They can definitely be tricky that way. Glad the video was helpful to you :).

Hi, Gena! I just recently learned about dry rot. Thanks for filling in the blanks. I see you found your walnut/squirrel bowl. The one in my collection is all dark. They are adorable. My cat died last week so I ordered some plants. A Thai Con and a ppp. What kind of pole should I use for my ppp? Hi, to Nora.
@ThePinkTrellis
@ThePinkTrellis Жыл бұрын
Hi Terri!!!! Oh no!!!! I’m so sorry about your cat 💔. Big hugs 💕💕💕. I love your comfort plant choices. I’m not a big fan of poles personally. Just because most of them are so bulky looking (especially moss poles). I like just using a bamboo stick. But I think any type of pole would be fine. If you’re up for maintaining a moss pole, those seem to be popular and used with aroid plants. I did get my squirrel/nut bowl!!!! I ended up just buying it on eBay. With shipping it was like $32 total. I couldn’t wait to find one at the thrifts lol. I’m so in love with it. It’s different than the one my mom had. I love that the squirrels ears are pink inside. If I find one locally I’ll still pick it up. I’ll have a little collection. They do come in different colors which is nice. Hope you have a lovely day!!!🐿️ 💕

Good information to share. I lost a variegated Obovata due to underwatering and I wish someone had told me a) that that was possible and b) that I could cut it back and try to reroot. Now I know better and have saved a failing incrassata with this method.

Thank you 💚💚💚. Yup for the most part we shouldn’t ever completely lose a Hoya. Not saying it won’t happen, because it’s happened to me, but with the proper knowledge and action we can save our plants if they start failing 😊.

Hi Gena! Thanks so much for this video! This has happened to me a few times mostly because I get a little afraid to water them. Especially as I get into purchasing more rare hoys. Sometimes I'm over cautious with them. I agree with you about propagating, its important to have back ups. I love your top, the foxes are adorable! ❤❤❤❤

Hi Nicole!!!! I’m trying not to be so afraid of watering. I feel like under watering them is a bigger risk at this point. Just from experience. I think if you have a nice chunky mix that drains really well there’s no harm in watering frequently. Thank you!!!! 🦊💕💕

Great timing. I got a rooted cutting of heuschkeliana from a friend and I think I didn't water it enough and it started shriveling. Dry rot. I took it out of the pot and now have it sitting in water until it rehydrates. I think it may need to go in a humidity box as well. I feel so bad about it!

Wow gena is like u read my mind lol I ordered a Hoya Mathilde and it was all cuttings now I replanted it and I’m worried about it rotting. What do u recommend?
@ThePinkTrellis
@ThePinkTrellis Жыл бұрын
I’ve had that happen and I absolutely hate that. That’s one thing I will NEVER do when selling my plants. They must have a good root system going before I send plants out. I’m assuming there is very little roots? When that happens to me I just watch it very closely. If you have a cabinet, or someplace with high humidity, I would put it in there. Keep it warm, humid, and with great lighting. I recently received a Hoya rangsan splash that was just cuttings. And I just pulled one of the struggling cuttings out of the pot to reroot on its own. I’m not sure what else to recommend. Just keep an eye on it. Good luck!!!!💚💚💚

Where do you get zeolite? I want to make a DIY pon mix..for alocasia in particular... Does hoya do a lot better in pon, than a chunky mix? Interesting, informative video on dry rot...
@ThePinkTrellis
@ThePinkTrellis Жыл бұрын
I get mine on Amazon. I do have a whole video on Hoyas in pon and a DIY pon recipe with links in the description of that video. I think it depends on the Hoya. Some like a lot of water and will do great in Pon. Hoya Bella is a great example of that. I have most of my Hoyas in a chunky soil mix and they are doing great, therefore I would not even think about switching those plants into pon. Thank you!!!!💚💚💚

@ThePinkTrellis
@ThePinkTrellis Жыл бұрын
So glad!!! This one was tossed. It’s a homemade pon and I put vermiculite in it which wet vermiculite is the worst lol. Sticks to everything. I don’t like it so I just tossed it all. There’s no way I’d be able to remove it from the rest of the “ingredients “. I will never add vermiculite again lol.

Cont. Save the plant. Cut away all the black mushy roots, spray with all the good roots with 3% hydrogen peroxide and put in clean orchid mix. Sometimes it takes more than one time to get it healthy again, some so well and sometimes the plant doesn't bounce back but i try my best. KZbin videos are so helpful.
@ThePinkTrellis

Indeed they are!!!! The nice thing is that a lot of plants are easy to save from root rot. You won’t be able to save the whole plant, but enough to be able to start again. Thanks!!!!

For the more succulent leaved Hoyas, the full plant can be rerooted if you have good growing conditions, like a light, warm and humid spot (I have done it with Hoya kerii and Hoya carnosa Krimson Princess in room conditions and with Hoya heushkeliana variegated, Hoya krohniana silver and Hoya wayettii variegated in a tent after doing a root mealy treatment a bit too agressively and basically all the roots died back, hardly lost any leaves) It does take a while and it is more risky than cutting up the plant… but it can definitely be done The propagation is safer in most circumstances Personally, what I would do with harder to get plants… is try and reroot most of the plant as a whole.. and take maybe a few cuttings as a backup just to be safe If you like rehoming/selling plants… chopping up might be a lot of fun, I don’t like having lots of the same plant to find new homes for 😅

About how many leaves max would you think is ok per cutting? I have a large plant that i rotted and I’m trying to save as much of the length as possible 😢
@ThePinkTrellis
@ThePinkTrellis Жыл бұрын
Oh gosh….that’s hard for me to answer. If you’re trying to save length than I would go ahead and experiment. Make it a length that you are comfortable with. Especially if you have a lot to work with. The leaves at the end of the vine will be the first to start showing signs of struggling. They’ll get limp and wrinkled in my experience. If that starts to happen I would just start cutting those off and propagating those on their own. Hope that makes sense!!!! Good luck 💚💚💚
@mommayanna

I tried to propagate a long stem with leaves and the whole thing died and never produced one root so I know what you say is correct
@ThePinkTrellis
@ThePinkTrellis Жыл бұрын
Yeah if there are no roots there’s no way a long stem will survive. Even if there are a few roots the plant will struggle. Learned this by experience 💚💚💚.
