That's so cool that there's a distinction between whether a duration is ongoing or not! This is exactly the kind of grammar explanation I need! Go raibh maith agat!

Once I had an Irish teacher give the class an assignment - come to class with a couple of ways to say “for” in Irish. (It was an advanced class so he said to go beyond the obvious iterations of the preposition “do” It was very interesting. “Ar feadh “ was one way. But the class found many ways to say “for” in Irish

Go raibh maith agat a Mholly, bhí am deacair agam an difríocht a fhios a bheith agam idir “le” agus ar feadh sa fhoclóir gaeilge. Agus tá a fhios agam nuair atá mé ag labhairt faoin bpraghas úsaim an focal “ar”

Which would you use when denoting a purpose vs a time? Like "they're here for an appointment" or "she's here for her kids", etc. Or would something else be used entirely in these cases?

There are a few options 😊 in Ulster ‘fá choinne’ would be used. You could also use ‘le haghaidh’ (I hear this in Munster but I think it’s also standard) or ‘i gcomhair’

Also you can use “chun” I think (or at least I do - maybe incorrectly) Tá mé ag dul go dtí an bhialann chun bia blasta a ithe I am going to the restaurant to eat some tasty food She is here for her kids - maybe means the same as she would do anything for her kids - “dhéanfadh sí cibé rud (no gach rud, no aon rud) ar son a paistí

There are so many ways to say “for” in Irish depending on the meaning and context. A great teacher I had for an advanced class once asked all the students to come to class with a few different ways to say “for” in Irish. Between what was prepared and what we brainstormed we found about 15-20 ways to say “for” in Irish

D'fhoghlaim mé focal nua do 'nóiméid' mar gheall ar an físeán seo (bomaite). Go raibh maith agat! Ní cheapfadh imreoirí na cluiche ríomhairí (I don't know how to say 'gamers' in Irish) gur is focal sean-aimseartha é coicís, mar gheall ar an cluiche ríomhaire 'Fortnite'. 😃

Is breá liom an focal ‘bomaite’ 🥰 tá mé sásta go bhfuil sé ar eolas agat anois. Go cinnte! ach is dócha nach mbíonn siad ag úsáid an fhocail sa chomhthéacs sin 😂
