I 💕💕💕 You, Ma'am. Such a nice explanation. If we start speaking English the way native speakers speak then it becomes so light and a lot easier to speak it but if we start speaking it in our own way then it will be a load on our tongue and we won't be able to speak it fastly and fluently. A non-native speaker will get tired if he's speaking English in his own way but if he's speaking in the correct way then he'll never get tired even if he/she speaks continuously for a long time.

In British English you pronounce the "t"?? Hmmmm
@AFPinerosG Жыл бұрын
This is so hard!!! I just realized I struggled with all of these words without knowing what they had in common. The stop T is the hardest sound I've encountered so far. I'm a native Spanish speaker and let me almost none of the people I know pronounce these words properly. I'll make sure to share this to everyone!

Oh wow! Thank you very much Rachel! I think the hardest part of English for non-native speakers is pronunciation. We can't see it from the writing and just like our own native language, the best way to learn the proper pronunciation is - imitating (in my opinion though). Thanks again Rachel, this is very useful, love it!

Hello, Rachel, don’t pay attention to princecio’s comment (below). I really appreciate your videos, they are useful and you are an excellent teacher. Your videos show more than tons of dictionary words with pronunciation, phonetic symbols etc. I’m 68 years old and had very bad English teachers at high school (it happened decades ago!). It’s difficult for me today to learn the correct pronunciation of words I’ve learnt in the wrong way in the past. This would be unbelievable nowadays with internet and thousands of resources we didn’t have in the past. For me, therefore, your videos are pure gold. Thanks a lot.

Miguel Chagas Everyone has their own accent, particular pronunciation and word choice, which makes it truly impossible to claim that someone has "perfect" pronunciation. While it might be hard to notice, but Rachel too has her own accent. While it's true that there are words where "t" will become silent, it also turns out to be a matter of choice. Where I live, I rarely hear people not pronounce the "t" in "mountain" or "sentence", even though they will also use the schwa technique to avoid pronouncing the "t" in "party".

I found out the answer to some of my problems, in this video! Garden, kindergarten, Martin, beaten, Britain, these are also the good examples of when our natives make a stop to signify the T followed by a schwa + N, instead of true T.

Thank you one more time Rachel for your great videos, which help us to improve our pronunciation on English language.
Really interesting. This is one of several differences between American and British English pronunciations that don't often get talked about. In most parts of the UK, the T is pronounced in these words. The exceptions are the northeast, southwest and parts of the southeast of England, where different types of glottal stop are often used.

This is great. My poor Latin American wife (and our L.A. friends) really struggle with this and similar words (fountain, maintenance, e.g.). They annunciate each syllable (the way WE should probably pronounce it) and can never quiet get the "stop T" sound. We don't even move our mouths, lips or teeth to make the Stop T sound. No wonder it's so difficult for them. I would hate to learn English as a second language. I speak a little German and French and a lot of Spanish, and typically what you see is what you get. But English? Look at the words "through", "though", "thought", "bough", "enough". The same "ough" letters but different pronunciations for each one. Respect to any foreigner that learns English.
