It might be very high level thing, but there is one thing suddenly come to my mind just now. In some case ''mou'' and ''mada'' can mean almost the same thing. Just imagine you have a plan to go out to watch a movie with your friend. You've come to friend's house and he/ she has not be able to choose what to ware on yet. You have been waiting for him/her more than half an hour and you got irrtated. In such case ''mou ikanai?'' and ''mada ikanai(no)? These feelings are slightly different but they expresses almost the same thing. ''Mou'' has a suggestive atomosphere with tiresome feeling in you, then ''mada'' has a rather stronger blaming mood. Another important point is this, if you say ''mou ikanai no?'' instead of ''mou ikanai?'', it can mean ''we are not going to watch a movie anymore since we're almost being late for the running time''. Just one sound ''no'' can changes the meaning because ''no'' emphasizes your feeling and sometimes make ''I DON'T understand WHAT do you want to DO?'' kind of feeling,also. If you are a beginner just forget about it. George-san always has intention to make the differences clear in multiple words in Japanese.

Hi George and thank you for all the great work and effort that you put into making these videos. I have a question for you but im not sure if this is the best place to post it. Up until now i have been mostly studing japanese via textbooks. This however made me very good at understanding textbook language but i realized that im really bad at understanding spoken japanese. I couldnt find any of your videos that cover this in detail so here are the words that i find most frequently used in everyday speech: Yappari Nanka Toka and a lot of versions of "iu-somethingsomething" (to many to list) These words are in practically every sentence you hear in japanese yet they are not covered in the textbooks that ive come across. So my question is: How do i use these words? Why is there TOKA after everything? Why are they saying "iu" so much when they are not speaking about saying stuff?
@ShadowriverUB
@ShadowriverUB 8 жыл бұрын
とか is particule similar to と and や where you list things and it put emphasis on fact it's "things like" like "etc." that there some other things too, i think it can be used also alone. I seen it explained in most courses i seen aspecially if it's also explaining や particule
@MONOBLACKMAGIC
@MONOBLACKMAGIC 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah ive seen that usage aswell but like 99% of time when they are saying TOKA they are not listing stuff and they are not bringin up examples. To me it seams like its either a filler word or a word for emphasis since it follows no pattern. Kind of like how we in english can say either "I met a man" or "I met this man" where the latter puts more emphasis.

Mr Trombley I am an aspring languages teacher from Germany, I have great respect for your knowledge on languages, so I just wanted to ask you something not 100% related to Japanese. Namely: What do you think of the notion, that with age comes less ability to learn new things, in the same vein of the phrase "Can't teach an old dog new tricks". I'm 23 and I'm fluent in 4 languages, but I don't want to stop at 5 languages (5th one being Japanese). I still feel like it's possible to learn new languages even with age, if the right "learning habits" are developed. As neuro-scientific research strongly suggests, it may be true that new habits are hard to form when one is older, but I have the hope that by, instead of directly acquiring habits related to a specific language, developing habits that are related to language learning itself and not a specific language, meaning that they are applicable to any language, it may be possible. Do you agree with this idea, or would you say the old saying holds its ground? (I sure hope not.) Since it is known you started learning Korean rather late (like 5 years ago?). I thought maybe you have an opinion on this. Thanks for reading!

It's nonsense. I know lingosteve learned to speak fluent russian after the age of 60. Now he is learning Korean in his 70's. I am encouraging my mother of 58 to learn french because she has always wanted to. If you are the type of person who is curious about new learning new things, languages, and culture, that won't go away with age. However, if you aspire to be a professional athlete..... that is something that you probably won't be able to do with old age. What languages do you speak/teach in Germany?

That's an old theory. Scientists use to think that we couldn't make new brain pathways beyond age 28, making learning new things difficult. Now we know that to be incorrect. We make new pathways all of our lives. Having said that, it is much easier to learn multiple languages before the age of 5 when your brain is a sponge.
@japanesefromzero
@japanesefromzero 8 жыл бұрын
I just watched a documentary called "the brain that changes itself" and it talks about brain plasticity. Brains CAN change and brains can still build new pathways. It can even re-route long established yet damaged pathways. I am not having any problem learning Chinese... HOWEVER I would say that part of that reason is that I have already build up significant language pathways. In the documentary they actually specifically say "this proves that you CAN teach an old dog new tricks". When I get hooked on a game I know that my brain goes into "all out learning" mode for that game. It's the same with Chinese for me now. I listen to Chinese entertainment podcasts in full Chinese and my brain is working overtime to find the patterns. And amazingly it finds all the words I already know. And other words that are repeated are being remembered even though I don't know what they are. If you do something enough your brain will put the energy towards it. In about a year I will be conversational in Chinese. Right now I am garbage at Chinese. But I know that my 4th language, Chinese, will come faster than Korean because I have build up those language pathways. Then I am off to Spanish. I do NOT thing there is a limit.
@japanesefromzero

Usablefiber... I agree that it is nonsense... However I am certain it's harder for someone who doesn't have "lingo" in their name to learn a new language when they are old. If a person hasn't kept their brain condition good by continually learning I think it's MUCH harder to put new things into because they have established hard patterns. For me, who by the way has "polyglot" in my name on my other channel, I have continually learned languages... not just spoken, but PHP, MySQL, Javascript, jQuery on top of the Japanese, Korean, and now Chinese. So for me it's not a big deal to just add a new set of rules. I don't have to break 20 years of thinking one way to do it. I think the 2nd language is the hardest as it's the first "reprogramming" of the brain. But all after are easier in my opinion and experience.

Hi zebatov. "I'm still here." and "It's still here." They says "XXXは、まだ ここにいる" or ここにある. Like "私(わたし)は、まだここにいる" George told about the difference of いる and ある. kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3yVlIKBfKuDqZo kzbin.info/www/bejne/mnbOiqV5eMtnf7c "He's still out." says "彼(かれ)は、まだ外(そと)です". But it's unnatural japanese. If you want to say more natural than it, please use まだ外出中(がいしゅつちゅう)です まだ出(で)かけている. George told about the difference of XXX中. kzbin.info/www/bejne/labLqoarlLdsZtU Thanks.
