Rob was a senior sales manager for a national company for 20 years before I started my garden buisiness . I’d agree with your cold calling success ratio. You said 70 knocks to get 1 interested customer. So to get you 10 customers a day to earn their £250 a day they’ve got to knock 700 doors per day…! That’s unrealistic and probably unachievable. You may have better results from using flyers put through every door by the Royal Mail ( like that national pizza company do) ? I’m guessing you could target a certain postcode on a certain day / month. So maybe a Friday so the whole area gets your flyer for the weekend when they may be planning to do their lawn? My philosophy to manage my sales team was to ask the question “when is the best time to sell to your customers..?” The answer is “when they want to buy”. So hit them with a punchy flyer, with quality before and after photos, transparent pricing, on the best day to sell , in the right month probably April when they are thinking about their garden. I know we start in March but most customers see doing their lawns in March as a chore. So in April it’s looking a bit shabby and your flyer hits the door mat at the right time. I know the Royal Mail has had a massive PR set back and rightly so. But it’s probably still a more reputable source than a door to door salesperson who may be mistaken for someone who may be untrustworthy? Your salesperson may be ok with you but you’d have to do loads of training as the customer would ask he/she for technical issues and they won’t be as confident or skilled as you. You’ve been on courses to build your knowledge they haven’t. They could misinform the customers of the product performance to get their £25..! They may not be as bothered as you. A company is only as good as it’s weakest employee. Your salesperson won’t be as good as you. Whereas a flyer is yours, they are your photos, your claims, your words. Your in control. I’d strongly suggest you keep the control and don’t water down that knowledge. Remember when your mate asked you to go do a weedkill and the customer was expecting much more… a salesperson could promise the earth and you turn up with a lawn feed…!

@@maxwellsgrasscuttingservices good idea Rob. Do a test area on an estate with the right demographic of clientele you want to entice. Flyers usually get between 1 and 2% success rate . And you can note which day to mail drop gets the right results. Ask a couple of your existing customers if they’d put a quoted reference on ie “Mrs Canibody of low fell says the treatments rob recommended have transformed our lawn and now the whole family can enjoy our garden again”. While your waiting for feedback go see your local Royal Mail depot and see the head postmaster to get a price for targeted mail drop by the local postmen on their rounds . My sons a postman in kendal and he says every week local businesses use their services. When they do the postman has to post through every door on his round not just the ones who get a letter that day. Good luck mate. Let me know how you get on. Having 60 or 70 lawn care clients will generate work for the hardscaping side of the business! Fingers crossed, anyway! Fortunately, my background is door to door sales so I will be doing exactly what you are talking about in this video. If you are ever in Birmingham, let me know and you can come an knock doors with me! I will show you how to gain customers through cold calling at peoples homes! You could get in touch with a local paper for the area you cover. You have quite an interesting life story covering your military service, KZbin channel etc and obviously your present business and future plans. Local papers are generally looking local content and a day out with a reporter and perhaps a camera man/woman might give you some pretty cheap advertising, especially if you take out a decent ad in the paper besides your feature. Another in might be a local good news story ie local Gardner rescues cat up a tree etc( you with cheesy grin and said cat etc. it all helps and gets people a glance at your business and personality as they take a cup of tea etc. Just a thought Rob.

Hi Rob , afraid I can’t comment on your journey forward but here’s how I managed to progress. I started in the recession of 2008 with door to door leaflets, and then progressed to local advertising (at a ridiculous cost) for 2 years. At the time I took on all jobs from mow blow and go to full landscaping. Never turned a job do. And boy were some of them awful. Now I’m in a position that I can pick and choose which jobs I do. I don’t do anything that involves heavy work as I’m of an age that it’s physically beyond me. I still do the odd big hedge or one off tidy , but to be honest once you get to a certain age the physical side of it just becomes to much. To be honest going self employed and doing what I do was the best thing that ever happened to me and I only wish that I had been 15 years younger when I when down this path. Keep pushing forward in what you are doing but never forget YOU WORK TO LIVE and not LIVE TO WORK. Quality of life is far more important that and material goods. Love the posts ❤👍

Some great advice Rob. I find it a bit tricky giving a quote on a garden just from a photo, they can be misleading. So I offer an estimate which allows you to adjust the price to the level of work needed, because you can get to a property and find the grass and weeds looking a lot worse than the photo suggests. Or if it becomes a few weeks before you get to the property…you get my drift.

And you could include extra clients each year as you reduce them over the 3 years. Cold calling is generally frowned upon in a lot of areas as others have said. Rob. Great post, my opinion is that you’re the face of your business, you have the knowledge and the wherewithal. A salesman doesn’t necessarily have that. I personally have never bought any service or item from cold calling and never will, don’t like it I find it very intrusive and pushy. You cannot beat a professional advert or flyer drop followed up by a personal visit, I think you have to put in the legwork and quote personally having said that I would concentrate on specific areas so that you can keep the round tight. Any lawn treatment posts in the offing, I’d like to see that as I dabble in treatments.

Door 2 door sales has had its day, done it before having my business and most areas are now no cold calling areas. Your better off using social media ads and use little advertising signs on your lawns that you currently do, I ask my customers to allow me to put signs up only small ones just saying that the garden is maintenance by my business. Or hold a bigger advertising sign with you and leave on the pavement while you’re treating the lawn. Or put a business card in your current customers neighbours door or give them a knock and introduce yourself and let them know you’re doing the neighbour garden. I don’t chase any work now I only take new clients on that knows another client or family. I would definitely not hire a sales person you can’t control what happens within the property and what’s said.

I'd sack that idea. Remember when you first started and things took off slowly. Its the same on lawn treatment. I watched american vid and they left different coloured door leaflets depending on what size garden they had. When they contacted him he could tell them how much it was going to be over the phone. I think you'll be paying the sales rep too much for it to work. I know from my experience knocking on doors doesn't work as people turn away as they feel under pressure. Not good to give stuff away either as people will have the free stuff and cancel you. Its a difficult situation. Whatever you do, remember to keep us informed. Cheers.

It’s a difficult one Rob. In the current fiscal environment there is a price point where there is a large customer base who will pay for their garden to be maintained, but won’t make the jump to lawn treatments. Canvassers can work, if you train them to quote then they will still get some of them wrong, so it's a bit of a gamble. Ideally the canvasser needs to be self employed to avoid insurance, holiday pay, national insurance etc. I would look at what % of your grass cutting customers stay year on year. Then remember that that's almost guaranteed income as they 'need' your grass cutting. I'm not sure treatments alone gets you that guaranteed income year on year as it's more of a luxury. Plus once you add the cost the treatment chemicals is there more profit in it than grass cutting? Maybe spread your options between both.

Hi Rob. I think you should take a look at James Sinclair’s channel who posts loads of good videos about how to develop local businesses. He says the person who is the most passionate about your business, and therefore in the best person to bring in new business is you. I think it would be easier for you to bring on a part time employee to train to do the gardening work, giving you more time to do marketing, quoting and booking more business. I don’t think cold calling is the right approach. Spend more time creating online content, marketing and maybe think about a stall at the local garden centre. All the best with scaling.
